Tony Dow credited his parents and the producers of Leave It to Beaver for allowing him to live a normal childhood

Dow was able to live the best of both worlds.

Child stars don't hold a glowing reputation in Hollywood, with many of them growing older and admitting that they gained a career at the expense of a childhood.

The good news is that the children's lives on the set of Leave It to Beaver were just as funloving and wholesome as the characters on screen.

The show's creators, along with several producers and members of the cast and crew, made extensive efforts to ensure that child actors like Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers enjoyed their childhood while working on Leave It to Beaver. This included measures like ensuring that the children had time off, similar to a school vacation, and allowing them some play time in between scenes.

During an interview with the Chicago Tribune, Tony Dow also credited his parents. They approached his stardom with caution, ensuring that it didn't interfere with his real life. Dow was grateful for these extra steps, as it allowed him to enjoy his career and his personal life without losing either.

"I guess I was sort of protected," said Dow. "My folks and the producers of the show were really conscious that the thing that made the show work was that Jerry and I were just like the kids next door. So I had my own circle of friends and we took our hiatus during summer when most shows were working. So they tried to keep our lives as normal as possible, which I thank them for."

Dow actually joined the cast of Leave It to Beaver accidentally, after he agreed to accompany a friend to an audition.

"A friend came by and said, 'Do you wanna go to the studio?' and I said, 'I don't know,' and my mom said, 'Put on your blue suit,' so I dug that out and went to the studio and, you know, it just sort of happened."
