When he wasn't acting on Mama's Family, Ken Berry loved to ride motorcycles
"It's more than a hobby with me," said the actor.
Being an actor doesn't mean you're destined for a life chained to a television set. Like the rest of us normal folk, actors are known to have hobbies and activities that enrich their lives and feed their joy.
For Mama's Family actor Ken Berry, there was nothing he enjoyed more than feeling the wind in his hair as he rode a motorcycle.
"It's my favorite hobby," he said during an interview with The Rock Island Argus. "As a matter of fact, it's my only hobby."
Berry was aware of the irony of having such a dangerous hobby, versus the sort of character he portrayed on television. Still, the actor adored it.
"Whizzing around on motorcycles doesn't fit my normal image, but it's more than a hobby with me," he said. "I'd spend hours on the road every single day if I could. When I'm riding in the mountains, time seems to stand still. It's just a thrill. I haven't found anything I like better."
The actor was also quick to boast what he felt were the benefits of riding a motorcycle. It allowed people to see as much of the world as they liked, and enjoy the solitude that just couldn't be found in a car.
"Generally, I prefer quiet mountain roads, although I often have to ride on a freeway to get to the countryside," he said. "It's also a wonderful way to get to know your neighborhood. I know every house, every corner, and most of the people in my neighborhood...But riding out in the solitude of the desert or the mountains is when I really get the biggest joy."
