A Big Battle is Brewing- the "War of the Colossal Beast"- Tonight!

Posted on September 4, 2021

Tonight on MeTV-it’s a sort-of sequel to a fantastic ‘50s film- as an enormous menace, thought to have expired, is rumored to have re-appeared south of the border- only to have the rumors proven as fact, and the menace even more dangerous than it was previously! Allies of two adjoining nations are forced to engage in the “War of the Colossal Beast”!

There’s a mystery in old Mexico- a truck bringing food to a local gun club has disappeared! Its driver has been found in a state of shock, and is uncommunicative- so, there is no explanation as to what happened to him, or where the missing vehicle might be.

When a news story about the incident is broadcast on TV in Los Angeles, Joyce Manning sees it and has her own theory- so she heads down to Guavos, Mexico, to meet with the local authorities, and co-ordinate with the American military’s Col Mark Baird- in hopes of discovering if what she suspects is true.

The only evidence so far: that, judging from its tire tracks, the truck disappeared straight up- and the footprints of a huge man have been found in the area- make Joyce feel she knows the answer- her brother, Col. Glenn Manning, was turned into a giant by exposure to radiation! Dubbed “the Colossal Man”, he was supposedly killed and fell off Boulder Dam, with his body never found- but now, she thinks he may have survived and is roaming the desert in Mexico!

When the search party heads out and climbs a mountain in search of more proof- they not only find the truck, but come face to hideous face with the Colossal Man- who has obviously suffered injuries in his fall from the dam, disfiguring him and causing brain damage that has reduced him to a savage beast.

Since the missing truck was filled with groceries, they think this giant must be searching for food- and plan to drive a truck loaded with bread ( spiked with a chemical that would put the big guy to sleep) through the area near where the other truck disappeared, in hope of luring him out and sedating him. It works! The massive beast-man grabs the truck, consumes the bread, and finally drops to the ground, unconscious.

It’s decided that he should be returned to America for treatment on a huge transport plane- but we witness bureaucracy in action as government agency after agency shift the responsibility for taking care of Manning from themselves to another group! There’s even some hesitance regarding where they can land the plane and confine the giant- but he is eventually ensconced in a hanger at the airport near Los Angeles, bound for the safety of himself and the personnel, for study and treatment. Joyce maintains that, regardless of his clouded mind, she may be able to get through to him and reason with him- and psychologists and experts are brought in as well. Unfortunately, the giant’s unstable mind drives him to escape his bonds and head into the city to create deadly  havoc! Will this colossal beast prove to be unstoppable?

As mentioned, this 1958 film is “sort of” a sequel to American International’s “The Amazing Colossal Man”- it even includes some footage from that movie in a flashback- but some things are at odds with the original, which we will explain, including the reason for the beast’s deformed facial features. We’ll provide background about the film, talk about the cast, present a commercial for an item to add to your dinner menu, bring you a colossal song, and more, plus- watch for a couple tributes to people who have made a big impact on our productions. Also be watching at the very end of the film for a gimmick we have seen in another AIP movie!

“War of the Colossal Beast” will be waged tonight on MeTV at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central time. Our Twitter followers will again be live-Tweeting during the program, using the hashtag #svengoolie – and MeTV invites you to join in, no matter what time zone you are in when you watch us. Our local Chicago area audience can get one more look at the movie that asks you to guess who the werewolf is- “The Beast Must Die”- this morning on our main local station, CW26, at 11 am.

We now have an item in our store that many fans have been asking for- finally, a zip-up front Sven hoodie! We also still have the pull-over version, and all the sizes are back in stock- so, you can have your choice!

Enjoy your Labor Day weekend- be safe, and be with us tonight for the return of a giant- who’s gruesome! (Wait- he already “grew some” in the original movie…)

For those of you who just watched _Hogan’s Heroes_, Dr. Klaus was played by Henry Corden, who took over Fred Flintsone’s voice—including in the cereal commercials—after Alan Reed died in 1977.

Oh, the challenges of cooking:
On the right, the scientifically accurate amount of red wine for the pizza sauce. However, I’m not sure about the portion in the vessel on the left, which is designated for the chef…

Looks a bit short.
Thereman Aceman2 37 months ago
Outstanding advice, Aceman! iIf the two amounts were combined, with a reasonable reserve added (for taste, of course), I believe it’s possible the chef will declare the sauce a masterpiece- no matter how it actually tastes

Sounds like Mr Katink splurged on you. Perhaps he deserves a thank you gift.

If you and hubby end up having pizza 🍕 tomorrow night, don’t feel alone. I’m chopping those tomatoes named after a certain Saint to make the sauce for the Hyde pizza. The president of one of the orchestra boards requested it. You kids have fun and go crazy 😜!!!

Since saying thank yinz costs nothing extra, please check this week’s blog for Tuesday night. I wanted to make sure you got my 10-Q. And if you don’t find it, many thanks!

OK, back home after a VERY long day at the Salt Mines (extra long starting as it did so very early, and on my day off to boot!) and then back out to go grocery shopping with Mrs. Drang. She drove!🥱
I may still be awake when the blog rolls over to the new week, but I won't bet on it -- or on me to be in the top 20, let alone top one!😴

Tomorrow is Mrs. Drang's birthday. We are going out to dinner, and may or may not be home when the Big Broadcast begins. DVR is set to record. We'll see.
I expect that, as early as I will probably be going to bed tonight, I'll be up at 7 for 'toons.

Hey, group, if you don't mind, I'd like to share a little personal story with y'all. It may be off-topic, but not really, because it relates to Telly Savalas' appearance on THE CAROLL BUIRNETT SHOW earlier this week on Me TV.

As many of us know, Savalas was justly proud of his Greek heritage, and of his stardom on KOJAK, which Me TV used to run. Well, an uncle of mine, Like Savalas, was proud of his Greek roots, and rose from patrol officer to Sheriff of Stark County, OH, an office that he held for thirteen years. Up to his untimely death of a heart attack at the age of only 53, "Uncle George," as our family called him, justly prized an autographed photograph that fellow Greek-American Savalas, posing as Kojak--yes, with a lollipop!--once sent him. It read: "George--keep up the good work: Kojak (AKA Telly Savalas)."

Thanks NPC. I've seen a few of those youtube videos featuring Ernest Borgnine and his son Chris. I guess they were gonna do a reality series on cable tv. They filmed that sometime I think it was 1995. The one with Dairy Queen, the look on the workers' faces as Ernest Borgnine walks through the door. Amazing!

Tomorrow is the 20th anniversary of The Day We Will Never Forget

8:14 – United Airlines Flight 175, a Boeing 767, carrying 56 passengers and 9 crew members, departs from Logan International Airport in Boston, bound for Los Angeles International Airport.

8:42 – United Airlines Flight 93, a Boeing 757 with 37 passengers and 7 crew members, departs from Newark International Airport, bound for San Francisco International Airport.

8:42–8:46 – Flight 175 is hijacked above northwest New Jersey. There are five hijackers on board.

8:46 – Flight 11 crashes into the north face of the North Tower (1 WTC) of the World Trade Center, between floors 93 and 99. All 92 people on board are killed.

8:50–8:54 – Flight 77 is hijacked above southern Ohio. There are five hijackers on board.

10:28 – The North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses, 1 hour and 42 minutes after the impact of Flight 11. The Marriott Hotel at the base of the two towers is also destroyed.

10:50 – Five stories of the western side of the Pentagon collapse due to the fire.

Two and a half hours after the first plane left Boston, the iconic “Twin Towers” lay in ruins in Lower Manhattan, and brave first responders and military personnel were scrambling to save lives and secure the country.

Life in America was set on a new trajectory.

I will NEVER forget waking up at 6am PST for work and watching in unbelievable horror at the chain of events. This crazy world is why I keep a dozen or so Svengoolie movies saved on my DVR…escapism for me at any given moment.

Hopefully we, and future generations, will always be fully aware of the profound happening of that day.

I live very South of you and all we got was drizzle to mess up my newly washed car. But I’ll take anything👍 According to my records Los Angeles area has only received 1/4” of rain all season. I do my Rain Dance every night but all I seem to do is scare the neighbors 😳
