Atomic Blast Releases Harryhausen's "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms"- Tonight!

Posted on June 22, 2019

Just in time for hot weather- we have a film that starts out in the frozen north- where an atomic blast releases a prehistoric creature upon the world! It’s more Ray Harryhausen stop- motion artistry as mankind  faces the “Beast from 20,000 Fathoms”!

In this 1953 film,  an experimental crew is up near the Arctic circle to check on the results of a nuclear bomb test. When checking near ground zero, two of the men are amazed to see what looks like a dinosaur lumbering through the snow! This mysterious beast causes an avalanche- and only one of the men survives!

Taken back to civilization, the survivor,  Prof. Tom Nesbitt, can’t convince anyone that what he saw was not a hallucination- but a real creature! However, some unexplained attacks suggest that what he saw does exist- and he finally convinces  a young lady who works with an expert on things prehistoric that something is out there. After corroborating with one other survivor of a mystery attack, Tom finally gets the military  and  expert Prof. Elson to join him in the search for what they believe is a rhedosaurus- a beast long extinct!

Before long, they not only spot the creature, but experience more tragedy thanks to it- and soon must face a full on attack on a major city that has even more deadly sidebar effects!

This film has the amazing stop-motion work that Harryhausen created, along with new techniques to have the monster inserted into live footage. Watch for one of the most famous scenes in this film regarding a policeman! We’ll not only tell you about the actors, but also a lot about the production, thanks to information from Roy P. Webber, author of “The Dinosaur Films of Ray Harryhausen”- a great book that just so happens to be currently on sale at  https://mcfarlandbooks.com/ . And, as usual, there’s a song and more Sven shtick!

“Beast from 20,000 Fathoms” emerges tonight on MeTV at 8pm eastern/pacific, 7 pm central- if you don’t know the time and channel in your area, please check  your local listings or at www.metv.com . MeTV invites you to join the many viewers who live- Tweet during the show on Twitter, using the hashtag #svengoolie  -  make sure you add that hashtag to your posts! Chicago area viewers get an encore of our really big show –“Attack of the 50 Foot Woman”- at 11 am this morning on WCIU, the U!

Please remember you can still take advantage of the big sale in our store, in honor of my 40 year anniversary! Even scarier than THE TWO FACES OF DR. JEKYLL would be THE
TWO CHINS OF JAY LENO.

Kenneth Tobey, who was in BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS and IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA, also appeared in 1957's THE VAMPIRE, as well as THE HOWLING and STRANGE
INVADERS. His most famous genre role, though, was in the original THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD.

I always thought THE VAMPIRE (AKA MARK OF THE VAMPIRE, not to be confused with the 1935 film of the same name), was an early film warning of the dangers of pill abuse, since the movie is about a doctor (John Beal) who becomes a blood-drinking monster after consuming pills containing vampire bat blood.

In "Thing ..." (1951) Tobey's character encountered a flying saucer and an alien.
In "Beast ..." (1953) Tobey's character scoffs at UFO sightings and sea serpent sightings.
Prof Thurgood is not so sure Col Evan is right about UFOs.
I wonder if the screenwriter deliberately wrote that knowing Tobey would be playing Cool Evan.

Howdy Carrie! Right now we are watching Beast from 20,000 Phathoms so I can catch up. How's everything? Seems I brought the hot weather with me.Having lighting storm here.
Jack Catbat 65 months ago
Would it be “heat lightning”? Welcome to the Midwest!

[P.S.: I was greatly disappointed to learn there is “no such thing” as heat lightning, that is, lightning caused by heat with no moist air whatsoever involved. It’s only a thunderstorm that you can see from a great distance because you’re living in a flat place.]

You know how I like to combine Sven`s movies:
What if the 50-foot Woman had two faces?
Can you imagine how much make-up she would need!
How long would it take her to get ready to go out?
I, know, I have a strange mind, but just one face. If I had two faces I surely would use the other one, because this one is getting old.
MADave JournalJeff2 65 months ago
Try seeing Frankenstein Dracula or even the wolf man with 2 faces?
Jack JournalJeff2 65 months ago
Would that be a two-headed anatomy, or two faces on one head?
JournalJeff2 65 months ago
Do you know what disturbs me most about two-faced people?
I do not know which face to slap first.
Just a joke, I do not slap people.
scottieO JournalJeff2 65 months ago
Glad to hear that Jeff. Otherwise that would just be rude!

A celebrity birthday of note.

The great Mel Brooks is 93 today.

He turned Frankenstein on its ear in a way that put Abbott and Costello to shame. “Young Frankenstein” parodied all the Frankenstein movies we love in wonderful way.

How many times has “Young Frankenstein” been referenced on this blog? Probably enough that if you had a dime for every time it was, you could buy out Svengoolie’s store. (He has a store?)

Well I see some of my
Post are still vanishing
and no way of stopping
it 😞
Trolls you do not win so childish and rude 🤡

Not to say nothing 😱 and let it go is hard to
do! So posting anything
hoping it stays long🤗 enough for it can be read well it's going to the "Corn🌽Fields" and does not have a chance
disappears to no where!

How unkind these trolls are to want to take 🤡someone's fun I know don't let them!
Keep on posting I guess
and hope it stay's 👻
I will keep on trying but it sure is getting annoying 😝

So Trolls go way and let us be if you are unhappy maybe you need to be nicer to others👫👬👭

I guess that's it on this subject 😱 if nothing can
be done about it too bad
for us!

Sven administration I know your trying to
take care of this 🎩 thanks for trying.

Hi Carrie, I hear ya. My one comment I posted yesterday has vanished. I guess someone was not amused by it. It's best just to get rid of the flag option this way there is no entertainment for those persons who have an axe to grind. It would be best to just let the Sven Adminstrator decide which comments should be removed.

Dave -- If it's just the trolls, we just have to out-endure them. Please re-post about your co-workers (and if it disappears, re-post again). I for one want to know the latest.
