Atomic Blast Releases Harryhausen's "Beast from 20,000 Fathoms"- Tonight!

Posted on June 22, 2019

Just in time for hot weather- we have a film that starts out in the frozen north- where an atomic blast releases a prehistoric creature upon the world! It’s more Ray Harryhausen stop- motion artistry as mankind  faces the “Beast from 20,000 Fathoms”!

In this 1953 film,  an experimental crew is up near the Arctic circle to check on the results of a nuclear bomb test. When checking near ground zero, two of the men are amazed to see what looks like a dinosaur lumbering through the snow! This mysterious beast causes an avalanche- and only one of the men survives!

Taken back to civilization, the survivor,  Prof. Tom Nesbitt, can’t convince anyone that what he saw was not a hallucination- but a real creature! However, some unexplained attacks suggest that what he saw does exist- and he finally convinces  a young lady who works with an expert on things prehistoric that something is out there. After corroborating with one other survivor of a mystery attack, Tom finally gets the military  and  expert Prof. Elson to join him in the search for what they believe is a rhedosaurus- a beast long extinct!

Before long, they not only spot the creature, but experience more tragedy thanks to it- and soon must face a full on attack on a major city that has even more deadly sidebar effects!

This film has the amazing stop-motion work that Harryhausen created, along with new techniques to have the monster inserted into live footage. Watch for one of the most famous scenes in this film regarding a policeman! We’ll not only tell you about the actors, but also a lot about the production, thanks to information from Roy P. Webber, author of “The Dinosaur Films of Ray Harryhausen”- a great book that just so happens to be currently on sale at  https://mcfarlandbooks.com/ . And, as usual, there’s a song and more Sven shtick!
