Be Prepared to Chill Out- with "The Thing from Another World"- Tonight!

Posted on November 28, 2020

Tonight, I know that, although the holiday was a couple days ago, many of our viewers will be giving thanks that we finally will be bringing you a classic 1950s sci fi/horror film that so many have requested- the original version of the frightening tale of a remote arctic expedition base whose inhabitants cannot escape the attack of a recent arrival- “The Thing from Another World”!   ( No, not the soap opera…)

This 1951 film, based on a chilling 1938 novella “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, has an Air Force crew, along with a journalist looking for a story, assigned to head up to a base near the North Pole to investigate the crash landing of some sort of unknown aircraft. Upon arrival, Capt. Pat Hendry finds that, along with the scientists there, an old flame of his is there- the lovely Nikki Nicholson, secretary to the head scientist, Dr.Carrington, who had first reported the unidentified crashing object.

A group heads to where the object touched down- only to find it buried, with just a fin, made of an unknown metal, projecting out of the ice. They find reason to believe it may be what was popularly called a flying saucer- and attempts to retrieve it fail- but they do recover a body, which appears to be radioactive, frozen in the ice! They chop it out, and bring it back to the base just in time- as a huge blizzard bears down on the area.

With this discovery, Hendry takes over, making sure the journalist does not send out any information about their find- and also demanding that the scientists not even examine the body, until he gets orders from the ranking general on how they should proceed. Dr. Carrington is immediately at odds with the captain, feeling they must learn more about what appears to be the alien pilot of whatever the craft was- but Hendry will not give in.

The storm makes getting an answer from the general almost impossible- and as they wait for further orders, the unthinkable happens- when the thing that they recovered proves to be very much alive- and deadly! As revelations of what manner of life the creature is only sets the scientists to further their own agenda, Hendry and his men realize that they are fighting for their lives- with no escape and, very possibly, no defense against the thing!

To repeat the warning posted earlier this week- we are asking that our blog commenters do not reveal who plays the alien creature. Yes, we know so many of you are familiar with the film- but, as we’ve stated, each week, we hear from viewers who have never seen our feature- and just this once, we wanted to give them the surprise of learning who appears in the role, which we will reveal at the end of the show. Not following that rule this time out will result in deletion of comments, and possibly a “time out” from commenting.

Of course, we will go over several of the cast members of the film- which includes quite a few familiar faces. We’ll have a new song for you, as well as a very special bit we shot at the only convention we did this year- the C2E2 convention from February- with a special guest cameo! And- not only will we give the creature’s identity at the end of the show, but also be watching for some out-takes that our crew found pretty amusing!
