Be Prepared to Chill Out- with "The Thing from Another World"- Tonight!

Posted on November 28, 2020

Tonight, I know that, although the holiday was a couple days ago, many of our viewers will be giving thanks that we finally will be bringing you a classic 1950s sci fi/horror film that so many have requested- the original version of the frightening tale of a remote arctic expedition base whose inhabitants cannot escape the attack of a recent arrival- “The Thing from Another World”!   ( No, not the soap opera…)

This 1951 film, based on a chilling 1938 novella “Who Goes There?” by John W. Campbell, has an Air Force crew, along with a journalist looking for a story, assigned to head up to a base near the North Pole to investigate the crash landing of some sort of unknown aircraft. Upon arrival, Capt. Pat Hendry finds that, along with the scientists there, an old flame of his is there- the lovely Nikki Nicholson, secretary to the head scientist, Dr.Carrington, who had first reported the unidentified crashing object.

A group heads to where the object touched down- only to find it buried, with just a fin, made of an unknown metal, projecting out of the ice. They find reason to believe it may be what was popularly called a flying saucer- and attempts to retrieve it fail- but they do recover a body, which appears to be radioactive, frozen in the ice! They chop it out, and bring it back to the base just in time- as a huge blizzard bears down on the area.

With this discovery, Hendry takes over, making sure the journalist does not send out any information about their find- and also demanding that the scientists not even examine the body, until he gets orders from the ranking general on how they should proceed. Dr. Carrington is immediately at odds with the captain, feeling they must learn more about what appears to be the alien pilot of whatever the craft was- but Hendry will not give in.

The storm makes getting an answer from the general almost impossible- and as they wait for further orders, the unthinkable happens- when the thing that they recovered proves to be very much alive- and deadly! As revelations of what manner of life the creature is only sets the scientists to further their own agenda, Hendry and his men realize that they are fighting for their lives- with no escape and, very possibly, no defense against the thing!

To repeat the warning posted earlier this week- we are asking that our blog commenters do not reveal who plays the alien creature. Yes, we know so many of you are familiar with the film- but, as we’ve stated, each week, we hear from viewers who have never seen our feature- and just this once, we wanted to give them the surprise of learning who appears in the role, which we will reveal at the end of the show. Not following that rule this time out will result in deletion of comments, and possibly a “time out” from commenting.

Of course, we will go over several of the cast members of the film- which includes quite a few familiar faces. We’ll have a new song for you, as well as a very special bit we shot at the only convention we did this year- the C2E2 convention from February- with a special guest cameo! And- not only will we give the creature’s identity at the end of the show, but also be watching for some out-takes that our crew found pretty amusing!

“The Thing from Another World” premieres tonight on MeTV at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central time. If you aren’t sure where to find us, or at what time in your area, please check your local listings or at www.metv.com . Once again last week, we were among the top trending topics on Twitter- and tonight, you can join the many viewers live-Tweeting during the show while it airs- make sure you use the hashtag #svengoolie. Chicago area viewers can get an encore of the movie that once again proved to be highly popular and drew great ratings for us- “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein”- this morning at 11 am on our main local station, CW26.

Hopefully, you checked out the special Sven holiday merchandise unveiled on Black Friday in our store! If not, by all means, take a look- and here’s a little inside information- if you were looking for a reason to order the Sven “At Home” box- you might want to check the store on Cyber Monday! Plus- be looking for some special deals in the week ahead!

Please join us tonight for our presentation of a truly chilling     (as in both Arctic AND frightening) classic!

I won't be up at midnight so an early congrats to first blogger tonight.
I'm putting my money on Bill since he's not won in a couple weeks. I think he's due.

Good bet. My bookie has deadringer42 at 4-1, Bill_K at 9-2, Dale 7-1, abc123 9-1, gabste at 50-1 but a live dog and a possible place or show bet. I’ve been scratched. Consider boxing the 1 or 2 horse in an exacta.

Fire on, wreath on mantle, Mash on MeTV

That’s very nice and cozy! But... look at the unused space above the mantle. Room for a 60” flat screen!!

The1Butler JournalJeff2 48 months ago
I got a 4pt and a doe with a bow . I went out for muzzleloader today and seen zip. 2 giant bucks were shot within a half mile of me , one by a 18 yr old kid .

Riddle me this Batman: I have the Remote App for my cable service on my phone, which allows me to watch “all” the channels remotely. Why, when I’m away from home, does my App say “You need your home WiFi to receive MeTV.” If I’m at home, I’ll watch Svengoolie on TV, not my phone! What good is the Remote App if one cant watch MeTV remotely? Any cable TV gurus out there who can answer this silly question?

You would have to ask someone with rabbits ears in the neighborhood or metv website could tell you if theres a broadcast station . Rabbits ears dont really work very good, you need a real antenna up high, unless you live close to the broadcast station. I'm 60 miles from my metv broadcast station and I can watch unless a storm. I know that's probably not a good solution for you.

"Select unrestricted"?? If it's select, isn't it by nature restricted? An oxymoron like jumbo shrimp and military intelligence?

Radio Classics did a tribute to her playing various programs that she starred in. My favorites are her as Margot Lane and opposite her was Orson Welles as Lamont Cranston in “The Shadow”
The1Butler MADave 48 months ago
Derwood!
LarryTheTrainGuy MADave 48 months ago
She was also a member of Orson Welles Mercury Theatre of the Air company and later went Hollywood with him along with Joseph Cotton .
TheKodakKid Aceman2 48 months ago
Moorhead’s Margot Lane was a strong female character. She ended up saving The Shadow/Lamont Cranston almost as often as he saved her. Female characters like that were rare in late 1930s.
Agnes Moorehead and Joseph Cotton were not the only actors to come out of the Mercury Theatre group. Ray Collins who was in Citizen Kane with Orson Welles later played Lt Tragg on the TV series Perry Mason with Raymond Burr. Also Scripwriter Howard Koch who cowrote War Of The Worlds with Orson Welles came to Hollywood with Welles and became a major screen writer He cowrote along with the Epstein Brothers "Casablanca"

Thank you to all who responded to my question, "Who is your favorite human Frankenstein?" I also have to give high marks to James McAvoy in the more recent film, VICTOR FRANKENSTEIN, in which he played the title role.
daleuhlmann 48 months ago
Some people have asked who is their favorite Frankenstein Monster. Let's tweak that a little bit:

Who is your favorite HUMAN Frankenstein?--Colin Clive, Peter Cushing, et al.? You can also consider any members of the Frankenstein family, such as Henry's two sons (Wolf and Ludwig), or, for example, Dr. Frankenstein's descendant Oliver (played by Donald Murphy in FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER), or Professor Frankenstein (Whit Bissel, from I WAS A TEENAGE FRANKENSTEIN), or Baron Victor Frankenstein (Boris Karloff, from FRANKENSTEIN 1970).

My vote is for the old Baron Frankenstein (Frederick Kerr) in the first movie. In the book his name was Alphonse. I like the way he puffs on his pipe and hands out the wine.
daleuhlmann PatS 48 months ago
He does provide effective comedy relief in the 1931 FRANKENSTEIN.

weird. i only have one of December movies already made for my fan (Valley of the Dragons). Looks like I know what I am doing tonight.

Time well spent
Aceman2 abc123 48 months ago
I’m glad your on it because “The Fan” is a tradition unlike any other. And while I’m on the subject, I hope you have a plan in place to ensure this tradition continues. Do you have any idea how many scripts you have made? Have you ever missed a week? Keep up the good work.
