Bela as the Monster?! “Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man” Tonight!

Posted on December 14, 2013

In a controversial bit of casting, Bela Lugosi appears  as the Frankenstein Monster- as Larry Talbot continues his quest to end his tragic existence as the Wolf Man- in the universal horror classic- "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man"- tonight on Svengoolie!

The unusual opening of this film (intended to be a sequel to "Wolf Man" and "Ghost of Franklenstein") has grave robbers opening the Talbot family crypt, in hope of finding valuables supposedly buried with young master Larry. Unvortunately, it's a full moon outside, and when the rays of moonlight hit Larry's body...

Larry ends up in a hospital far from home , with some amnesia about where he has been- and stuns the local authorities, when he says he's Larry Talbot- and they discover  records of his death! Escaping from the hospital, Talbot heads across Europe, in hopes of finding the renowned Dr. Frankestein, whom his old protector Maleeva the gypsy woman feels may be his only hope.

Arriving near the old Frankenstein home, a gruff innkeeper states that the doctor is dead- and his manor in ruins, due to the awful thing he created. Talbot and Maleeva  go to the ruins, and,  discover the Monster frozen in ice- but NOT the doctor's notes.

Talbot decides to contact the doctor's surviving daughter to see if  she might help- but  when Talbot's doctor  tracks him down- and the Monster is onthe prowl again- the village  becomes a frenzy of anger and fear!

"Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man" is a memorable film for many reasons- one being Bela Lugosi as the Monster, who originally was scripted to still have Ygor's brain, and still be blind, as he was at the end of "Ghost of..."- and Lugosi also wasto have actual lines as the Monster. The studio thought better , and decided the Monster sholdl remain mute, and no mention be made of his blindness. We'll tell you all about it, and the various cast members, including Ilona Massey as the daughter of Dr. Frankenstein. And, yes, thsi is the movie with the "Song of the New Wine" (which we always called "Fa-Lo-La, Fa-Lo-Lee" though a lot of resources say it's "Fa-RO-La"...)

See it all tonight at 10 pm eastern and pacific, 9 pm central, or check listings in your time zone to see when it appears on Me-TV. In Chicago, you get a second look at "Mummy's Ghost" at 11 am on WCIU- the U!

I had to laugh when a couple viewers asked "didn't this just run a couple months ago"? No- they must be confusing it with "House of Frankenstein" which had both the Monster and Wolf Man. Lord forbid they actually pay attention to the titles of our movies...

If you're reading this early enough, I hope you'll be coming to see "Sventa Claus" at Alternate Reality Comics in Chicago- I'll be there from 1 to 3 pm! all the information is listed on our site under "appearances".

See you tonight- when the moon is full and bright (in the movie, anyway...)
