“Brides of Dracula”- As Sharp As Their Fangs- Tonight!

Posted on February 28, 2015

Tonight, we have a film that our Sven viewers always ask to see again- and you'll see it even better, because we got a better print of the movie- behold the "Brides of Dracula"!

A pretty young woman is on her way to a girls' school for a new teaching job- but someone has his eye on her for a devious purpose! When she pauses at a local Transylvania inn, the coachman is bribed to continue on without her- leaving her stranded at the inn- where she encounters a baroness who rules the area- and offers the girl lodging at her castle before helping send her on her way (which she accepts, even as the locals hint it might not be the best idea).

At the castle, the young lady, Marianne, catches sight of a young man on a balcony- and, with some prodding, the baroness reveal it is her son- who is "ill". Marianne ends up meeting the son, who tells her a tale of his mother's cruelty in keeping him imprisoned. Marianne decides to help him gain his freedom- with some tragic results!

Coming on the scene shortly thereafter is the famed vampire hunter Dr. Van Helsing- who has been summoned by a local priest who has suspicions that a "plague" causing the death of  the area's young women may be more than just a medical problem. Van Helsing, based on his past experience, knows all too well what the problem is- vampire attacks!

Meanwhile, Marianne has made her way to the girls' school, where she receives an  unexpected visitor- and soon, Van Helsing must battle new members of the vampire cult before Marianne becomes the next victim!

A lot of viewers  love this 1960 movie, not just because it's a quality Hammer studios horror film, which stars the great Peter Cushing- but also because it has a somewhat different slant to it, with a blond vampire rather than the tall dark type most associate with vampires. Some, of course, enjoy the lovely young women  in the cast as well!

As I said, we are fortunate to have gotten a print of the movie from Universal that is much higher quality than what we've had previously, which will hopefully add to your enjoyment as will the Sven segments - a couple of which are favorites of fans of this film!

"Brides of Dracula" takes flight tonight on MeTV at 10 pm eastern/pacific, 9 pm central, or check your local listings for the start time in your area. Chicago Sven fans get another look at last week's ratings blockbuster "The Monolith Monsters" at 11 am on our sister station, WCIU- the U!

Join us tonight and share a bite with the brides!

...before I sign off here at the blog today, let me add my condolences on the passing of Leonard Nimoy- a very talented and thoughtful man. He will always live long and prosper in many hearts and minds.
