Celebrate Independence- from Visibility! “Invisible Woman” tonight!

Posted on July 5, 2014

This month, our theme on Me-TV is "A Gal and a Gill Man"- and we kick it off with a gal without gills- or, much else when she's in  transparent mode- it's the "Invisible Woman"!

No, it isn't the fantastic Four's Sue Storm, nor Charles Dickens' younger love interest from the 2013 film of the same name...this 1940 film's invisible female is Kitty, a department store fashion model, who works for a cruel boss who mistreats his stable of models. When she gets in a spat with the boss, he sends her packing- and, in need of a job, she answers an ad from a screwy old scientist. The slightly-cracked Professor Gibbs, living and working under the auspices of a playboy who's just about broke, has invented a machine that will render people invisible- and needs a subject to test it- which is the very job Kitty has applied for!

She undergoes the experiment- and - what do you know- it actually works! Kitty slips out to get some revenge on her nasty former boss, then ends up getting involved with our nearly-poor playboy; while a deported mobster  gets wind of the machine, and sends his hapless thugs to steal it (so he can become invisible and return to America). Kitty, the professor and their pals are in a dangerous position- especially when she becomes visible again!

This is a much more light-hearted entry in the series of films spawned by the original classic "Invisible Man" with Claude Rains- and has plenty of familiar players, from the lovely Virginia Bruce as Kitty, to the great John Barrymore, of all people- plus, Charlie Ruggles and , yes, Shemp Howard along as additional comic relief- and a few more you'll recognize! We'll certainly tell you all about the cast, and- include your weekly minimum requirement of Sven shtick.

"Invisible Woman" can be seen ( I should stop saying that) tonight at 10 pm eastern/pacific, 9 pm central, or check local listings. In Chicago, our viewers get a final Hammer fix at 11 am this morning, with "Brides of Dracula".

Hoping that you all are enjoying your July 4th weekend (it actually IS a weekend this year!)- and will be back here next week, when we start our run- in order- of the three movies featuring "the Creature from the Black Lagoon"!
