“FrankenFest” Begins- with the Original “Frankenstein”- Tonight!

Posted on November 2, 2013

Feeling a little let-down because Halloween is over? Well, it's not over until we SAY it's over- and there's cause to celebrate starting tonight- because , for the next month on the Svengoolie show, it will be "FrankenFest"- a weekly tribute to various incarnations and exploits of the Frankenstein Monster. And- what better way to start the month off , than with the definitive Monster- as played by the great Boris Karloff- in the very first of the Universal  "Frankenstein" films! Behold- "Frankenstein"!

This highly atmospheric milestone in the Universal monster annals features Colin Clive as the brilliant but maniacally driven Dr. Henry Frankenstein - whose fiancee is worried that his work is driving him to a mental and physical breakdown. She recruits one of Henry's friends and his father to try to calm him down and leave the lab- but Henry, aided by his hunchbacked assistant Fritz, continues his quest to bring life to dead tissue. Through grave robbing and  the theft of a brain specimen (though not quite the one Henry wanted)- a specimen of  man is created- and Henry uses his fabulous laboratory equipment- along with the power of lightning- to make his creation live!

I'm sure I don't need to go any further in summarizing what you'll see- this beloved horror film from 1931 is probably one of the best known stories for any horror fan. Boris Karloff is outstanding as the Monster- giving him nuances and shadings of emotion that other portrayals of the creature never equaled. We'll introduce you to other key cast members and  give you some background on the production- along with some bonus Sven fun!

"Frankenstein" comes alive tonight on the Me-TV network at 10 pm eastern and pacific, 9 pm central, and , at a time if you are in another  area that you can find in your local listings. In Chicago, at 11 am on WCIU- the U- we give you another look at "Kiss of the Vampire"- with the latest edition of "Drac Dynasty" and the Kerwyn "Prattling Poultry" commercial- (both of which we are hoping to get put on our website as videos that you can enjoy!)

Once again, let me thank everybody who helped us make the Svengoolie Halloween season tour a success-  and I hope you'll join us this month for all the  "FrankenFest" features. Please check back here for a very special blog tomorrow...oh- and if you're in an area that changes the clocks- turn the darn things back an hour tonight!
