Hammer Time Tonight with “Curse of the Werewolf”!

Posted on February 16, 2013

What would our "Furry February" be without the ONLY werewolf movie made by the esteemed British Hammer House of Horror? And so, we proudly present Oliver Reed as the young man whose tragic ancestry plagues him with the "Curse of the Werewolf"! This 1961 classic tells the story of young Leon-son of a beautiful mute serving girl whose unfortunate encounter with an imprisoned beggar leaves some questions unanswered (you'll understand when you watch!). After his mother's death, he is adopted by a Spanish nobleman-who notes some strange behavior in the boy and enlists the local priest to help with his problems. As the boy becomes a man, he sets out to find his fortune, and lands a job at a winery- where he is tempted by his boss' daughter-but the arrival of the full moon causes him to succumb to a new passion- blood lust- as he becomes a werewolf! This film has always been a fan favorite- from the unique origin story to the singular werewolf make-up by Roy Ashton- and the beautiful Yvonne Romain, as the mute serving girl, is stunning.Oliver Reed's performance makes you wish his character would have had the lifespan of Larry Talbot, and starred in further werewolf films! "Curse of the Werewolf" will be our Svengoolie feature tonight on Me-TV at 10 pm eastern, 9 pm central, or check your local listings.(San Francisco fans- please note-the show runs on KOFY's 20.2 channel EARLIER in the evening, despite the late showing on the main KOFY channel no longer running). In Chicago, you can see the encore of "Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man"-with Bela Lugosi as the Monster- at 11 am on WCIU, the U! A couple notes: once in a great while,I will get a message from a viewer saying that my intro summary to each week's movie "gives away the whole story". I disagree-and, quite honestly, suspect most viewers KNOW the whole story anyway.I'd like to know what you think. In other news, I've heard that the upcoming "Scary Monsters" magazine that will be a Sven tribute edition has accumulated a record number of submissions from Sven fans.I really appreciate the participation of so many of you, and have also written a special introduction to the issue (which , I'm sure, gives away the whole story- see previous paragraph!) I hear there will be some very special memories, previously unseen photos, and more. This is a real honor for me! The issue is due to hit newstands sometime in April- I'll make sure that I warn you when it's about to come out! Enjoy tonight's entry for "Furry February"- and check back here occasionally for new Sven info!
