It's More Dan Curtis Fright in "Dead of Night"-Tonight!

Posted on September 28, 2024

Tonight on MeTV- we offer for your approval what might have been director/producer Dan Curtis’ version of “The Twilight Zone”- in an anthology of three stories- much like his “Trilogy of Terror”- that range from time-travelling sentimentality to frightening horror- in tales that come alive in the “Dead of Night”!

This 1977 made-for-TV film is, much like “Trilogy of Terror”, another collaboration of Curtis and Richard Matheson- who either wrote or adapted each story. Curtis had originally done a one-episode pilot for a “Dead of Night” series back in the late 60s that never got picked up- and this film, along with “Trilogy”, was his last attempt to sell a “Dead of Night” series.

 by

We begin with a story of a young man who loves vintage cars- who obtains and restores a 1926 roadster. On his first trip in the car, he somehow travels through time, back to the 20s! After an odd encounter, he finds himself back in the present day-and realizes his trip to the past has a major effect on his future in the tale of “Second Chance” !

Story number two takes us to an old European village, where a doctor’s young wife seems to be a continuing victim of -a vampire! He refuses to believe that such a thing is the reason for her illness- and recruits a young friend to try to solve the mystery of what’s going on-which leads to a shocking conclusion in “No Such Thing as a Vampire”!

The final story is almost as eerie and frightening as the final story of “Trilogy of Terror”! A distraught mother grieves the death of her young son who drowned- and, in spite of her husband’s warnings, goes to extreme supernatural lengths to bring the child back. Black magic succeeds in reaching that goal- but the boy doesn’t seem to be the same as before- as his mother finds out with the return of “Bobby”!

This anthology progresses from what could be a heart-tugging “Twilight Zone”-ish episode to more and more horror. It features a lot of familiar faces in the cast- Ed Begley Jr., 1960s “The Avengers” Patrick MacNee, Joan Hackett, and even Elijah Cook Jr. among others. We’ll introduce you to all of them, provide background information on the production, and you’ll see me check out another famous time-travelling automobile, plus a Nostalgiaferatoo visit, another “Too Drawn Out” guessing game, some vintage clips involving creepy kids, a new interview with the lovely Cerina Vincent of “Cabin Fever”- and more!

“Dead of Night” comes a little earlier in the evening- 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central time. As always, you are invited to join in on the Tweeting during the show on Twitter- just make sure to add the hashtag #svengoolie to your Tweets. Our Chicago area viewers can spend a “little” time this morning catching the rerun of “The Incredible Shrinking Man” at 11 am on our main local station, WCIU, the U !

Remember that the new Svengoolie comic book “Day of the Doorbell Demons” will come out next week! Also coming up- a new Sven decoration, and more anniversary goods!

Meanwhile, join us tonight for some fright in the “Dead of Night”!

Good morning and happy Svengoolie day from Storgoolie. It’s time once again to present to you my art of the week. This week, I have 3 new art pieces to share with you (you can find them in the comments below)! Storgoolie will see you all later on tonight for the big broadcast of “Dead Of Night”!
First off, here is an early New Year’s Day artwork featuring Sven, Kerwyn, and the Sven Squad as the New Year’s Day babies!

Next up, here is another early New Year’s artwork (both of my New Years Day artworks were sent a few months in advance) featuring Sven as “Baby Sven New Year”!

Finally, here is another pencil portrait of Sven that I made but in psychedelic art form. This was my first using psychedelic art form in my artwork!

If you click on my name to view Bill K's review, you'll have to scroll down about five or six items from the top. Look for the one that begins with "Good evening, everyone!"

Ed Begley Jr. was the assistant cameraman for the motion picture EQUINOX (1970) Maybe Svengoolie could show that good ol' horror movie some time.

I'm excited about this trilogy as I've not watched it before. Being a long time Dark Shadows fan, just by Dan Curtis making the trilogy has me very interested! I'm sure many of beat a path home after school to watch Dark Shadows in the 1960s! The best soap opera ever made!

Could it be?! Another Too Drawn Out?! I love those! They're fun and challenging. A nice bonus to the show!

Nostalgiaferatoo!! LOL! He is completely hilarious! I love it when his eyes get big and orders everyone to be quiet, waving his finger with one of those insanely long fingernails, saying, "Silence!" You never know what he is going to say next! It's always fun to have Nosty on The Big Broadcast!

That said, my very best to Mr. Goolie, Kerwyn, Nostalgiaferatoo, IMP, and Gwengoolie! Oh, it will be fun to see those Sventoonie episodes again in October! Y'all doing a great job!

Biding September adieu, and welcoming in October and Boo-Nanza!! It's going to be extra fun!

Enjoy! Happy October!

For most filmgoers, anthology movies can be a "hit-or-miss" proposition. On one hand, unlike a single-story film, an anthology can offer second chances for an audience who might feel that, even if one story had disappointed them, any of the other segments had still redeemed the movie for them. On the other hand, such a film generally lacks the more fully developed characters and plotlines that a single extended story can provide.

Still, if done right, anthologies can be most satisfying cinematic experiences. Some of the more memorable multi-story films have included D W. Griffith's silent masterpiece INTOLERANCE and the brilliant Italian comedies BOCCACCIO 70 and YESTERDAY, TODAY AND TOMORROW. Anthologies have been especially popular in the horror genre, with such fan favorites as FLESH AND FANTASY, TALES OF TERROR, TWICE-TOLD TALES, and the British Amicus studio's series of omnibus chillers. This list would most certainly include tonight's movie, producer-director Dan Curtis' 1977 made-for-for TV movie DEAD OF NIGHT.

This movie's title had earlier been used for two other big-screen films. The first had been the classic 1945 British-made anthology feature by the Ealing Studios that writer Robert Bloch had called the "almost perfect horror film." The second (with the alternate title of DEATHDREAM) had been a 1974 Canadian-made chiller directed by A CHRISTMAS STORY director Bob Clark. This movie, which has become a cult favorite, is about a young man who returns home from the Vietnam War as a blood-seeking ghoul. The film had seemed to channel W. D. Jacobs' classic short story "The Monkey's Paw," which, ironically, is the inspiration for this evening's movie's third tale, "Bobby." The other two installments are entitled "Second Chance" and "No Such Thing as a Vampire."

This DEAD OF NIGHT, which aired on CBS on March 29, 1977, was Curtis' follow-up to his immensely successful 1974 ABC anthology movie TRILOGY OF TERROR, which had starred Karen Black in three different roles in three different stories. Curtis had decided to bring back TRILOGY's principal screenwriter, author Richard Matheson, to pen the teleplay. Interestingly enough, "Bobby" incorporates a similar scenario as TRILOGY's third tale, "Amelia," with, once again, a woman (played by Joan Hackett) who finds herself trapped in an isolated setting and battling a supernatural menace, in this case, her own son, whom she has called back from the dead. As with "Amelia," many consider this movie's third segment the best of the three.

The other two stories, though, have their own respective appeal. The first, "Second Chance," starring Ed Begley, Jr., takes Matheson back to his days as a frequent contributor to the original TWILIGHT ZONE TV series, with its protagonist's chance involvement with past events in a small community that ends with a surprising twist finale. It was based on a short story by Jack Finney, author of the book THE BODY SNATCHERS, which has been adapted to film several times. The second tale, "No such Thing as a Vampire," is about a wife who tries to convince her husband (played by the always marvelous Patrick Macnee) that she is the victim of an undead stalker.

Despite Curtis' and Matheson's hopes for a repeat success, DEAD OF NIGHT did not garner the same blockbuster ratings as had TRILOGY OF TERROR. Still, Curtis, for one, must have thought enough of this movie to turn to it again, for his 1996 USA Network anthology chiller, TRILOGY OF TERROR II. This movie's third installment was a remake of DEAD OF NIGHT'S "Bobby," which proves that anthology films' stories can cast long, dark shadows.

Bill K:
"can cast long, dark shadows" Brilliant word play!
Great inclusion of other anthologies to show how directors can really mix and re-mix things up!

The wife and I traveled a bit south to Auburn, IN to the Auburn/Cord/Dusenberg Museum last week, and among the cars on display was this little oddity.

No word on who the driver was, but I think we can guess.
