It's the Perfect Recipe for Revenge- When A Make-Up Man Perfects "How to Make a Monster"- Tonight!

Posted on June 25, 2022

Tonight on MeTV-at a time of year when many people are pondering how to make some delectable masterpiece on the grill- we’re serving up an encore of the American International film that gave a second serving of the studio’s Teenage Frankenstein and Teenage Werewolf! And , rather than grilling, the object is killing- when a master of creature creations brings his monsters to life in order to strike back at the heartless studio heads who decided to show him the door. Back on the menu -it’s “How to Make a Monster”!

This 1958 favorite begins with renowned horror make-up artist Pete finishing applying the Teenage Werewolf make-up to a young actor ( in this case , is NOT Michael Landon, who played the part in the original film)! Pete and his faithful assistant Rivero are proud of the job they’ve done- as is the director of a new film which pits the teen wolf man against the Teenage Frankenstein  ( who IS played by the young actor from the original AI film, Gary Conway). Pete’s proud moment is soon taken away from him- along with his job-when the studio’s new bosses invade his make-up room- and bluntly inform him that his skills will no longer be needed at the studio! These geniuses feel that monster films have worn out their welcome with audiences, who would rather have laughs, music, and pretty women instead of horror! (Take it from someone who has experienced it in his career-this is often the case in entertainment, with management not caring what the audience really wants, but what they think they SHOULD want!

Angered that his 25 legendary years as head make-up artist at the studio mean nothing to this new regime (hey- experienced that myself at a different company!), Pete comes up with a surprisingly sinister plan-to use his monster creations, the very ones new management disdains, to get revenge on these exasperating executives! Remembering an accidental discovery he made in the past, Pete starts mixing a special ingredient into the make-up that numbs the actor wearing in of his free will- leaving him susceptible to follow every command Pete gives him. So, the maniacal make-up man creates monsters that will carry out the same mayhem they have previously done on the screen- but for real this time- against the arrogant men who want to end his career!

The police are baffled by these horrific crimes- while Pete’s weak-willed assistant Rivero, who still has a sense of right and wrong but remains loyal to his boss, worries about his involvement in Pete’s scheme-and the young actors being used as Pete’s pawns start to get confused about periods of time in which they seem to have “blacked out” while in make-up. Will Pete be successful in carrying out his revenge by using his “children”- the monsters he has brought to life on the screen- to bring down the studio he helped build into a success?

We have brought this film back because it is another one of those 1950s horror films that viewers keep asking to see again, fondly remembering the two famed American International monsters ( from “I Was a Teenage Werewolf” and “I Was a Teenage Frankenstein”- two movies we would love to be able to show that are being withheld by the person who currently owns the rights to them). You’ll see some familiar faces, both regulars and guest stars, from MeTV shows- and we will reveal a common thread among them-while revisiting the familiar make-up of the teen monsters. We’ll talk about some trivia relating to the film, and have plenty of Sven shtick, including a song – and you can relive my taking pen in hand to make myself into my own monster!

“How to Make a Monster” begins at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central time tonight- and, during the show, you can live-Tweet along with other thousands of other viewers on Twitter- just use the hashtag #svengoolie . Once again last week, we were trending in the top ten topics on Twitter during the show. Our  encore of the classic science fiction film “Forbidden Planet” will be available for our Chicago area viewers at 11 am on CW26.

Work is being done for some summertime Sven merchandise that we know will be a hit with our fans and friends- so keep checking our store (and be watching soon for new commercials for the store that just may include some favorite catchphrases)!

It is looking more and more like we will be back doing public appearances in August! Make sure you check here in the blog and here on our website under the “appearances” tab for details when they are available!

Meanwhile, join us tonight on MeTV- when mesmerized movie monsters end up causing screams off the screen!!

Rich,

I waited years for ME-TV to come to our area and we finally got it about a year and a half ago. I enjoy the whole family of ME-TV Channels, but Saturday nights on ME-TV are the highlight of my TV week, with the "Three Stooges" followed by "Svengoolie".

I like how you give each film "equal time" and provide your viewers with background on the making of the film, the careers of the actors, etc. Very nice.

I also enjoy your supporting cast of characters - human and otherwise - including some disembodied voices, as well your songs, with Doug's accompaniment.

Happy 43rd Anniversary - and here's to many more years of Svengoolie and friends, on ME-TV.

It might have to be just recent ones (public domain and folk tunes) with arrangements and multi-tracks by Doug Graves and Anita X. Orcist. And the lawyers on both sides might get their knickers in a twist -- some films even copyright the names of their characters. Messy stuff, y'know.

On the photo page there is someone in shorts next to Ponce DeLeon in Florida. That's close to where my son is stationed. In fact I think that is St. Augustine to be exact.
