It's Two Dream Teams- Creatures VS Comedians-as "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" Tonight!

Posted on November 21, 2020

Tonight on MeTV, it’s one of our most requested films- in fact, we heard from several viewers who were disappointed that we did not run it on Halloween! It features an all star roster of the Universal monsters, as well as the duo who were Universal’s top comedy team for many years- in fact, this film actually returned them to the limelight when their careers had been waning! You get two of the classic monsters, both played by the men who established them as horror legends- as well as the creature most people think of when they hear the word “monster”- the Frankenstein Monster!  With Bud Abbott and Lou Costello as the glue that holds this monster mash together we present what many consider to be the favorite horror comedy of all time- "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein"!

We begin by catching Chick and Wilbur at work- two over-worked railroad baggage clerks, struggling to unload their latest shipments and causing most of their own problems. Wilbur has an additional- though welcome- distraction when his latest girlfriend, a knockout named Sandra, drops by- and Chick is dumbfounded, unable to see why she is attracted to him, since this beauty is obviously way out of Wilbur’s league. Meanwhile, the phone never seems to stop ringing- this time with a long distance call from London! On the line is someone the boys are not familiar with – but we most certainly are- it’s Larry Talbot, the man cursed to become a werewolf when the moon is full! Unfortunately it  just so happens to BE full at the moment, transforming Talbot before he can completely deliver a dire warning to the boys. To top off the turmoil at the station, one Mr. McDougal, an abrasive customer (who actually might have benefitted if only Talbot had completed his warning) arrives to harass the boys, demanding that they drop everything ( NEVER say that to Costello!) to deliver a couple boxes from their latest shipment to his “house of horrors” exhibition. These items are what he feels will be a sensational attraction for his business- supposedly the authentic coffin of Count Dracula, and –the body of the REAL Frankenstein Monster! Chick isn’t buying that story, but he and Wilbur promise to take care of it that evening.

It just happens to be a dark and stormy night as the boys work the late shift to make the delivery to McDougal’s “House of Horrors”- the perfect setting for the nervous Wilbur to learn –to his dismay- that the display pieces are definitely authentic ! Naturally, he can’t convince Chick that they are dealing with the real deals- Chick thinks it’s all in Wilbur’s limited and superstitious mind. Count Dracula , meanwhile, rises from his coffin ( or, his “bunk”, as Lou refers to it) and makes his escape- along with the Monster- from the museum- leaving Wilbur in a trance, Chick aggravated, and McDougal minus his new attractions! The furious McDougal thinks the baggage handlers have stolen his valuable exhibits and wants them put in jail!

The next stop for Dracula and the Monster is an island castle sanctuary, in which the laboratory notes of the original Dr. Frankenstein are in the hands of a renowned surgeon. Surprisingly, that surgeon is none other than Wilbur’s beautiful girlfriend- Sandra! This finally explains her interest in the chubby fellow- she has great plans for him; she will transplant his easily- manipulated brain into the Monster- thus making the powerful creature easier to command, and the perfect pawn for Count Dracula!

Back on the mainland, we find Wilbur and Chick have been bailed out of jail by a woman they assume was Sandra- until a pretty blonde stranger named Joan shows up, and reveals that it was she. Little do the boys realize that Joan is working undercover with McDougal’s insurance company, investigating the supposed theft of his property, in hopes of recovering the missing display items. Meanwhile, coincidence of coincidences- the boys run into Larry Talbot, who has just arrived from England, and must enlist the boys to aid him in finding the two evil creatures of legend, before Dracula carries out his scheme , and can use the powerful Monster in his evil plans!

Wilbur, with two lovelies apparently wanting to spend time with him, decides to have Joan AND Sandra join him for a big masquerade ball, leaving Chick as a fourth wheel, hoping to make time with at least one of the ladies. They head to the island castle to pick up Sandra- and while waiting for the girls to finish powdering their noses, answer the castle phone- only to find it’s Talbot on the line, claiming the Monster and Dracula must be in the castle they are in! The boys decide to search the place, stumbling onto a hidden lower chamber where Wilbur again encounters the monsters- and just like in McDougal’s, still can't convince Chick that he's actually found them! When they return up to the main level, the girls are ready to go- and Sandra introduces them to her associate, Dr. Leighos- who appears to be the spitting (or biting?) image of Count Dracula! He encourages his visitors and co-workers to go have a good time at the masquerade ball- using his powers to convince the reluctant Sandra to continue their plan, even though she feels it is too dangerous, having spotted Joan snooping around the Frankenstein papers.

The ball seems to be a must-attend destination for everyone in the area- that includes nasty Mr. McDougal; Doctor Leighos dressed in a letter-perfect Dracula “costume”; and the less than festive Larry Talbot. The party degenerates into a frantic catastrophe that puts Chick and Wilbur in peril- leading the group back to the island castle, where Wilbur ends up being prepared for the brain transplant- while the Frankenstein Monster is restored to full and dangerous power – and the rising full moon has the usual effect on Talbot , pitting the Wolf Man against the vampire- and the Monster on the loose in pursuit of Wilbur and Chick!

This classic Universal picture revived not only the careers of Bud and Lou but also the studio's near-dormant monster roster. The film’s success resulted in a few more films with the boys meeting other Universal horrors. Watch along with us, as we give you some background on the production, introduce key cast members- and add in some Sven fun!

Good Black Friday evening, group! Here's one more story regarding Lou Costello's well-known stubbornness that actually happened during ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. Director Charles Barton told author and film historian Gregory Mank that, in that scene where Bud and Talbot have rescued Lou temporarily from the castle and Lou runs into a wall trying to find his way out, the comedian ran into it twice. Barton asked him why, and he answered, "Because it's funnier that way." Barton replied, "Once, it's funny, twice, it isn't." "Well, I still think it's funny, and I'm gonna do it," Lou insisted, Barton answered, "Knock yourself out if you want to, but just remember who gets the final say-so on the editing." Sure enough, as Mank explained, only ONE of Lou's run-ins into the wall remained in the final print.

Happy Black Friday, group. In light of this day, what could me more appropriate a movie trailer than this?

I have seen that movie. I think. Disappointingly, it has nothing to do with post-Thanksgiving shopping, a subject deserving of a horror film on its own.

At work you get your temperature taking before you enter . Why doesn't this happen so people can have Thanksgiving together? I'm not a doctor Jim but its logical.
CelticTwilight The1Butler 48 months ago
Because you can be asymptomatic and still be contagious.
BelleLugosi CelticTwilight 48 months ago
Exactly. Taking people's temps tells you exactly one thing: fever or no fever. It can't tell you if the person is infected and contagious but has no symptoms. That's the oh-so-wonderful thing about COVID; it's the Invisible Man.

Good Afternoon, Everyone:

Thought I would pass these along.

I made my 2nd batch of cornbread for dinner today. Reason: Dinner was being delivered to me by my Son in Law Brian and his Wife Beth. They drove the 20 miles from Owings to Gambrills and will then travel another 10 to 15 miles to deliver dinner to my Other Son in Law, Michael and his Wife Kelly.

I wanted to share what I gave and what I got in return. They had a nice card on theirs' that said "Grateful for Family even though 2020 is determined to keep us apart". The card on mine said "I hope this doesn't make you sick"

Happy Thanksgiving!

Bill K

(And, yes, I did post this on both boards. This one got the better picture of my cornbread!)

Here is an amusing anecdote about A and C's reluctance to try new material, as recounted in Bob Thomas' biography of the team, BUD AND LOU. For one of their films (Thomas, unfortunately, does not identify the movie), director Charles Barton had approved a new, revised version of the team's "Packing, unpacking" routine that had been written by their chief writer, John Grant. Lou didn't like it, and wouldn't listen to Barton's explanation that people had seen "Packing, unpacking" before, and that this would put some hilarious, new spins on its central premise. Lou continued to stubbornly object, arguing that "So what? It's still funny. We're gonna do it the same way we've always done it!"

Barton finally let Lou have his way, but the director had a trick prepared up his sleeve: He let the cameras continue to roll, even after A and C had completed the routine. Confused and frustrated, Lou finally asked Barton, "What's the matter? Why didn't you yell, "Cut?" Barton replied, "I'm still waiting for the funny part!" Lou angrily exclaimed, "That's it! We don't have to take this! Come on, Bud, we're going home!" Bud, who didn't like to rock the boat, just simply went along with his partner. Barton claimed, the next day, Lou reported for work, went on as if nothing had ever happened, and did the revised routine without protest.

Here, by the way, is the standard "Packing, unpacking routine" from their 1943 film HIT THE ICE.
daleuhlmann 48 months ago
I think even the most ardent Abbott and Costello fans will agree that one of the team's weaknesses was their reluctance to try new material; both men were felt safe and comfortable with their tried and true routines. The problem was that they had been repeated so many times in movies (including reissues) and on radio and in live performances (as they would be later on TV), that, by 1944, audiences were growing tired of Abbott and Costello and wanted something new (ironically, though, when they HAD tried something new, like playing different characters in two films that had split the team up, LITTLE GIANT and THE TIME OF THEIR LIVES, these efforts were not successful at the box office, so the two immediately after returned to their standard characters and bits). But the "really something new," ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, DID click with audiences, and, for the first time since 1944, the team once again finished that year among the top ten box office stars.

Good Wednesday Hump Day to one all on the blog!

We've been talking off and on about shortened and/or misleading movie titles. Yes, this past Saturday's official title was BUD ABBOTT AND LOU COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN. Another example is the 1963 Roger Corman sci-fi X, THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES, starring Ray Milland. The movie's REAL title, according to its opening credits, is simply X.
Oscar daleuhlmann 48 months ago
Happy Hump day Dale, it is pretty common for people to shorten names, is it convenience, laziness, or something else?
daleuhlmann Oscar 48 months ago
Perhaps all three at times, Oscar.
