Last (not LOST) Weekend of Summer

Posted on August 31, 2012

Yes, this is it- as I’ve mentioned earlier in the week- we’re going into the last weekend- and running up to the end- of summer. It may still be warm after Labor Day Monday, but, since my school days, summer grinds to a halt for me after that Monday. So- what’ll we miss? 90+ degree summer days (so- maybe we’ll have 90+degree FALL days!); the looming end of baseball season (looming a little larger for one local team than the other);much less of attractive ladies wearing their summer outfits (go ahead, label me “sexist”- I’m sorry); vacation time pretty much fading fast; the end of the days of less television to keep up with –with favorite shows returning with new content, and new shows to tempt our interest ( I often feel like I watch too much TV- then I convince myself that it’s actually part of my job…); and the reminder that after fall comes-gasp-winter! There’s been a handful of things I wanted to do this summer that I never got to- but it seems like that happens every year. Places I would have liked to visit; events that I wish I had been able to attend; people that I really would have loved to see- but life and work do tend to get in the way of some things. I’m not complaining (much) though- it was a good, though odd summer, with the super hot temperatures making things a little more uncomfortable at times than I would have liked. I certainly enjoyed the many Sven events we did- and the fact that so many kind people were perfectly content to wait in the heat to spend time with me. I got to see some people that I don’t get to see all the time-good friends who don’t live around our area any more, and family members who came into town after long absences. I got to return to some favorite summer haunts, and to visit a few places that I had never been before. And- I’ve been connecting with our new national audience, and getting their feedback on the show. I’ve learned that, for a few viewers, horror/comedy or comedy films are to them what Joe Besser shorts are to most 3 Stooges fans. I’ve had to explain (and will do so again now) that, in order to get the good Universal classics that our fans love, we are contracted with Universal to show films for a bunch of movies – a “film package”-that they provide to us. BY CONTRACT- we have to show the movies, even some that maybe the staunch horror fans might not like, or feel don’t belong on a horror movie show. I have to point out, some of the classic horror show hosts throughout the genre’s history also showed some comedies now and then- and I do understand that not everybody wants to see them. Most of our fans seem okay with that, and are tolerant. I should add, though- some of us DO like the comedy films. I have always respectfully suggested that, if you really dislike them so much- just don’t watch that week. Others have also pointed out- the segments that I do are not exactly high drama- they themselves are comedy. Regardless, we hope those of you who object will understand- there will always be far more horror films than comedy on our show. I guess I sound pretty dire and dour in having the door to summer slammed shut- but- all this really means is- we’re closer to our favorite season- Halloween! Not to mention football, basketball, fall colors, the smell of bonfires, lovely cool evenings…come on, summer, get moving- we’ve got an action-packed Fall to get to!
