Leap Day Becomes Creep Day- with Petrifying Peril from the "Monolith Monsters"!

Posted on February 29, 2020

Tonight on MeTV- they want to rock all night and petrify every day ! We’re talking about some unearthly meteor fragments with the power to turn flesh into stone-  as these sinister shards  mutate into towers of destructive terror and become the "Monolith Monsters"!

This 1957 science fiction classic begins just as several other movies have- with a somewhat wayward meteor making a crash-landing in the arid desert. On impact, it smashes itself into thousands of pieces. When Ben, a local geologist, stops on a desert road to add water to his radiator, he spots an unusual fragment of stone that he can't identify-and, as any geologist would, decides to take the mystery rock discovery back to his office for further investigation. He gets back to his office with the fragment, where neither he nor local newspaper publisher Martin are able to identify it. Ben goes to sleep there-only to be awakened in the night by a major rainstorm! He notices something odd happening to that unidentified rock sample he left out in his office- and goes to get a closer look- which turns out to be a VERY bad idea.

The next day, Dave, the head of the federal geology office, makes a routine visit to Ben’s place – only to be met by a horrible sight!  The office looks like it has been demolished, with hundreds of strange rocks all over -and he is shocked to find his pal the geologist appears to have turned to stone! This mind-boggling discovery has him at a loss to figure out what has happened- or how a human could possibly be transformed into the equivalent of a statue!

Meanwhile, Dave’s girlfriend, Cathy- who is a teacher- has her class out on a field trip to the desert- where one of the kids picks up a black chunk of meteorite, and takes it home as a souvenir. While this is going on, an autopsy is being performed on Ben- as much of an autopsy as would be possible on a stone corpse- that yields no answers- resulting in the body being sent to a specialist. Dave returns to the shambles of the office along with Martin- who notices that the many pieces of rock scattered around look just like the single piece Ben found in the desert and was examining!

The office event is only the beginning-as Cathy recalls her student finding a similar fragment- leading to a frantic trip to the girl’s home and a horrible discovery. Soon the locals face more destruction, more odd stones- and more victims of strange petrification- and the shocking fact that some people who have had contact with the stones are actually slowly TURNING to stone! It falls to Dave and his girlfriend Cathy to enlist his old college professor in solving the riddle of what is happening- and how to stop it! Time is running out, as they have mere hours to find a cure for the victims who are transforming to stone- while the meteor rocks multiply, and begin growing - becoming towering stone pillars that grow, and then collapse, with their massive weight crushing anything in the vicinity. Inexplicably, the smashed rubble starts growing again, forming more towers that are slowly moving toward the populated areas. Will the monoliths continue to advance, wiping towns and their inhabitants out with pulverizing force?!

Most 1950s science fiction films seem to use atomic radiation as the source of a deadly menace- but this movie goes down a slightly different path, with the unique idea of inanimate objects becoming the monstrous threat- with a totally different cause. We’ll fill you in on the cast, which includes some recognizable actors- and rock your world with the usual Sven shtick- including bringing back a favorite commercial for an asteroid-avoiding product- and a vintage Sven song!

"Monolith Monsters" crash your TV set tonight at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central, or check your local listings (or at www.metv.com) for specific time and channel where you live. MeTV invites you to join the many folks on Twitter who live-Tweet during our show- often putting us among the highest trending topics during that time- using the hashtag #svengoolie .Chicago gets a second look at the Sven-shtick-filled “Mummy’s Curse” on the U- at the special time of 9 am, due to sports programming.

The Svengoolie Studio Set - featuring a Sven figure in traditional outfit, with his own coffin and rubber chicken- is selling rapidly in our store- make sure to check it out and order while we still have them in stock!

We continue our visit to the C2E2 comics and entertainment convention at Chicago’s McCormick Place today-where, from 12:10 to 12: 20 pm- you can get a “celebrity photo op” with me (check for availability). Following that, it’s a special Sven 40th Anniversary panel in Room S504 from 12:30 -1:30. We’ll do a final autograph session from 1:45 -2:45- (at table 1). . Due to the short session, we can only do ONE autograph per person. Yes, you CAN take a photo with me then at no cost! Since the autograph session is only an hour- try to get in line early, since they will have to cut the line off so we can end by our out time and make way for the next guest who will be taking over the table. You’ll also catch us out on the convention floor, shooting material for future shows, and we’ll make a stop at the CW 26 booth.

See you tonight on MeTV- where people who live in trashed houses should not grow stones!

Wow Jackie Coogan appeared on a lot of shows after being Fester on The Addams Family?
daleuhlmann MADave 57 months ago
Yes, and even before he played Uncle Fester. I saw him on a couple of Perry Mason episodes.
Catbat daleuhlmann 57 months ago
He was on the Brady Bunch twice.

Sven noticed the page title was MONOLOITH MONSTERS and edited the title to MONOLITH MONSTERS and reposted the page.

That had the unintended consequence of resetting the comments.

You can go to user name pages (click on red user names) and see the comments posted to the MONOLOITH MONSTER page but that page itself no longer exists.

During the week Sven fixed his spelling mistake. That started the blog over again (from 0) so the old posts were lost.

Jack, are you in a well. I heard an echo. I will call the Batdog to come get you out.

That may have been me using my “edit” button. Instead of the whole blog winking out of existence, I get a duplicate comment that I have to drown, like in _The Prestige_.
Islander 57 months ago
Just remembered we lose an hour Sunday morning at 2 am. How does ME TV programming handle that switch over at 2 ? Will you diehard double shift bloggers have to put an extra hour in ?
Maybe they could compensate with a third hour of stooges.

Those diners also have really good fries and pancakes. Now the beer signs read "Auténtico como tu."

And then there is the “Chihuahua sandwich.” https://texashillcountry.com/chihuahua-sandwich-movie-theater/

No Chihuahuas were harmed to make this sandwich!

El Comedor in George West is kaput. In its place is Agave Jalisco Restaurant, which is part of a small (5 locations) local chain. The owner is an Alaniz, so I think it’s owned by the same family. You can check out the street view in Google Maps to see if they kept the old building.

Watched Fiend Without A Face last night. Noticed many familiar concepts from various sci fi movies in this flick. That would make a nice Sven movie also. Right up his alley.
The commentary mentioned the director was NOT enthusiastic about directing this film and some days would not show up on set only to quit before the movie was completed. The lead actor , Marshall Thompson , took over directing duties to finish the movie.
Lynn Islander 57 months ago
Sven has said in podcasts that he would love to get this for us. So who knows? Someday it just might happen.
Islander Lynn 57 months ago
Really ? Didn't know that. That would be great.
1MikeM Islander 57 months ago
Thanks Islander. I did not know that Thompson finished directing this movie. I've seen this movie. One of the cast members is Terry Kilburn as one of the Army Officers. Kilburn played Tiny Tim in the 1938 Christmas Carol.

FIEND WITHOUT A FACE was an out-of-the-box movie like THE MONOLITH MONSTERS. Saw FIEND... as a kid at the drive-in on family night.

I love it when Svengoolie shows a movie I remember from my childhood. I hope distribution rights to FIEND... aren't held up in limbo.

Hey gang I had a thought at work today I was wondering if MeTV ever aired Batman during the week Mon-Fri late afternoon/early evening hours?
daleuhlmann MADave 57 months ago
I think it was always Saturday nights, Dave, although half-hour Batman-Batgirl episodes did air briefly on weeknights as part of a "Summer of Me" about four or five years ago.

"Poor old Johnny Ray

But he moved a million hearts in mono.
Our mothers cried, sang along, who'd blame them?"
MADave 57 months ago
Roy Orbison's crying would be a good song for this weekend?
PatS 57 months ago
All good suggestions. I'm going with the gypsy angle -- "my little gypsy sweetheart." Note, I don't have a monopoly on satires -- yeah, 'Cry' or "Crying' have great possibilities. Glad to send along some satire tips. Go to it, guys and gals!

Interesting article on the main MeTV website about Eight Time Travel Shows That Time Forgot. I remember a few of them, and thought they were good/enjoyable.

Wouldn’t mind seeing some of them land on Super Sci-Fi Saturday Night. Some are brief (only 1-2 seasons or less). Maybe they could be put in on a rotating basis.

Re the comments below about fictional plagues: as I've mentioned, I have a collection of a couple dozen Plague Novels -- many variants on the basic plot, "The Bug Gets Out." Everything from classic lit (_Journal of the Plague Year_) to paperback potboilers (_Plague From Outer Space_). Not surprised that CONTAGION is suddenly in demand again. The biggest undercurrent IMO is that the germs or viruses won't play by any rules. You can't see them. They're hard to avoid, prevent or cure. Not always obvious where or how they started. And if they mutate it's Start Over. Novels also may have the various cudgels of experimentation, germ warfare, media hype, corrupt government, corrupt military, scientific hubris...

In the novels, all but a few end with "Science Triumphs Again." We want to believe that, don't we? In the movies, too, the baddies get vanquished -- supernatural (aliens, vampires, werewolves) or natural (viruses, giant creatures, volcanoes, experiments gone awry). We identify with the survivors, not the victims.

PatS Jack 57 months ago
.Our two most modern "plagues" were AIDS and Legionnaire's Disease (both still out there). Luckily we figured out some of how they're spread, how to avoid and treat them. Nature keeps writing new rules, though.
