Metaluna Mayhem on “This Island Earth”- Tonight!

Posted on April 11, 2015

Tonight on MeTV- we bring back a sci fi classic from the 50s, featuring one of the most memorable space creatures in Universal's monster gallery- as we find that aliens have ideas about- "This Island Earth"!

Dr Cal Meacham, a nuclear physicist, has a strange encounter while flying his small plane- and then- things get even stranger! He gets a shipment of condensers unlike any he's ever seen-and, when he tries to order more from  the same company,  he soon receives a bunch of unusual parts and instructions to build...something! He builds the machine- a weird communicator called an "interociter"- and gets a message from an odd fellow named Exeter- who says that, by building the device successfully- he has "passed a test" - and is a suitable  candidate for a special project!

Cal is transported via an unusual aircraft to a remote compound- where he meets Exeter  and his similar-looking cronies- as well as an international group of scientists recruited  as he was. Among these experts on nuclear power are a female scientist he claims to know (though she plays dumb-for a while) and another intelligent fellow played by Russell Johnson (the Professor from "Gilligan's Island"!) The three of them become suspicious about what Exeter and his pals are really up to- leading to an attempted escape  that ends up with Cal and his gal pal being whisked away to the planet Metaluna that is under siege- and encounters with both alien attackers and the bizarre mutants used as a labor force.Surrounded by danger- who can Cal trust- and can he and his scientist squeeze survive?

This fantastic science fiction film, starring Rex Reason, Faith Domergue, and Jeff Morrow, is notable for the big headed "Metaluna Mutants"- which typified the alien "bug-eyed monsters" of the 50s- and its special effects , which were highly impressive for the time period. We also have a crisper copy of the film, to make those effects stand out!
