NEW Sven Content in the Universal Classic- "Dracula's Daughter"- Tonight!

Posted on April 18, 2020

Tonight on MeTV- we are very happy to not only bring you an early Universal horror classic-but also a bundle of NEW footage, shot before the virus crisis shut down our production! It’s included in this presentation of the actual sequel to te orgional Bela Lugosi “Dracula” film- featuring the female offspring of the infamous count, who takes after her father in a way she regrets- but is unable to fight! She must deal with the irresistible thirst she has inherited by being- “Dracula’s Daughter”!

After the success of the wildly popular “Dracula”- this film picks up right where the original ended- in the dungeon of Carfax Abbey, with Van Helsing (named VON Helsing in this film) ,standing over the inert body of Count Dracula – which is sporting a wooden stake through its heart! The police burst in upon him, observe that he has a stake-driving weapon in hand, and take him into custody for murder. Dracula's body is locked up in the local police department-where a mysterious woman drops by, and, using a strange hypnotic power over the lone policeman on duty, makes off with the Count's body. She spirits it away, and then engulfs it in a funeral pyre that she thinks may free her of her family curse (Leaving us viewers to ponder how, after this fiery final rest the Count managed to return in future films!) Her salvation is not to be- as her odd "assistant" Sandor underlines that her behavior still indicates that she has not lost her desire for human blood!

Meanwhile, the incarcerated Von/ Van Helsing contacts his brilliant, but somewhat skeptical former student, Jeffery Garth, asking him to help prove that he is sane- that  his act of “murder” was actually a brave heroic act-and that vampires do exist. While trying to decide how he can help, Garth attends a society party, and encounters a stranger who has arrived -a visiting artist, Countess Marya Zaleska (in reality, the daughter of the Count that Von Helsing slew!) Jeffrey converses with other guests about his work in curing his patients' cravings, which the Countess overhears- and, thinking he might help her to defeat an unnamed craving, asks for his assistance. He agrees to help her, although he has no clue as to what her affliction might be!

Soon, however, a rash of attacks, with victims drained of blood, brings about suspicions. Jeffrey’s secretary (who hopes to be promoted to the title of girlfriend as well) takes an instant dislike to the Countess- for good reason- as the story continues, striving to confirm suspicions that a vampire does exist-and that said menace will do anything to remove any threats to its existence- eventually taking us back to the Transylvania castle where the original vampire story began - and where lives may end!

This 1936 film was made 5 year after the original “Dracula”- and boasts an eerie atmosphere , in no small part due to the unearthly presence of Gloria Holden’s Countess. Edward Van Sloan makes his second appearance as Dracula’s nemesis, Von Helsing, and Otto Krueger as psychologist hero Jeffrey. We’ll talk about the cast, and provide Sven shtick- including an often-requested interview with another Dracula “relative”-  plus some new segments featuring visits with the stars of the original “Candyman” film- the lovely Virginia Madsen and Tony Todd-plus another fun talk with one of our old friends- Tom Atkins of ‘Halloween 3”-not mention a brand new song about the  movie!

Meet “Dracula’s Daughter” tonight on MeTV at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central, or check your local listings (or www.metv.com) for time and channel where you can watch in your area. In the Chicago area, our viewers get an encore of “This Island Earth” -which again brought us record-breaking viewership on METV last week- at 11 am on the U !

We are very touched to hear from so many viewers who feel we are helping to get them through these troubled times- we’ll keep trying to lighten the mood and join in getting us all through this!

Join us tonight for daddy’s little ghoul on MeTV!

Our local theatre can't show movies, of course, but they are being allowed by the city to open between 5 pm and 8 pm to sell stuff from their concession stand-which they admit is where they make a great deal of their profit. People are stopping by to get stuff to take home and eat while they watch a movie there. Guess they are enforcing the social distancing thing for sure, but I doubt that's a problem for the people dropping by, since they know the drill by now and they're just happy to have access to something fun.

Our old theatre's been closed for years. The current one has been in business for over forty years.
Well, we gave it a good try, but now it's time for the new blog. See you there.

Hey, gang.
Well, just coming out of some bad weather again. Thankfully things should be settled down by tomorrow so can watch Sven, hopefully, in peace.
I'm looking forward to seeing what new stuff I notice this time around.
I've been adding to my list of Peter Cushing /Christopher Lee movies that I have seen at least once. I have now seen The Creeping Flesh. Both actors were in fine form. It was a Columbia production, but don't know if they kept their rights to it. Maybe one of these days Sven can do a month of their buddy movies.
Yay, just found out we are no longer under tornado watch. Now I can do the dance of joy.

Wish I could say it is, but it's somehow more nerve-wracking than ever. Maybe it's because I'm an old lady now and I have more of a sense of my own mortality.

Carol Burnet has the flu, Asian or Hong Kong?, Harvey asks. Glad its not not Covid. Whole skit about her having the flu. how appropriate for our time now.
