No Housing Shortage Tonight with "House of Wax" and "House of Svengoolie"!

Posted on October 19, 2024

Our “Halloween BOO-nanza” double features continue tonight with a classic fright- and a new treat! First, it’s murder and mannequins in the memorable Vincent Price tour de force- “House of Wax”- followed by the first “House of Svengoolie”-a new feature that allows our Sven Squad- Gwengoolie, Ignatius Malvolio Prankenstein (aka Imp) and Nostalgiaferatoo- to spread their wings hosting a fantastic Jim Henson creation- “Labyrinth”!

We begin with the 1953 film, originally shot in 3D ( but-alas-presented in 2-D tonight) at the New York museum of Professor Henry Jarrod- a gifted sculptor who prefers to create historic tableaus instead of the sensationalistic type displays found in most wax museums. However, with popular tastes being what they are in the early 1900s, these cultural displays don’t bring in enough revenue- so, his business partner, Matthew Burke, feels that, since Jarrod refuses to go the more shocking horrific route, the best profit would be via insurance money- and he proceeds to burn the museum down, with Jarrod trapped inside and thought to be killed in the conflagration!

Years later, we see that Jarrod has miraculously survived-though now he is wheelchair bound, with his hands crippled and unable to sculpt any longer. Regardless, with the help of some assistants, including the mute sculptor Igor, he has built a new wax museum, but his standards appear to have changed- this time, it includes the “house of horrors” type exhibits that Jarrod used to shun.

Meanwhile, lurking out in the streets of New York, a cloaked, disfigured murderer kills the fiancée of Jarrod’s old partner Burke- who appears to have committed suicide- and soon, the young woman’s body mysteriously disappears from the morgue!

The fiancée Cathy’s roommate Sue, who actually found her friend’s body and came face to frightening face with the killer, joins her sculptor boyfriend Scott, employed by Jarrod, in a visit to the new museum- and is bothered by the fact that the wax figure of Joan of Arc strongly resembles her late friend. Jarrod wheels up in his chair and suggests that she- Sue- is the perfect model for a new figure of Marie Antoinette, since she has a striking resemblance to his original version that burned in the long-ago fire.

Sue is not convinced by Jarrod’s story about using photos as the inspiration for his statues- and sneaks into the museum to inspect the Joan of Arc statue- leading to a shocking confrontation that could see she herself become a permanent part of the museum collection- and no longer a part of the land of the living!

This film is gifted with an amazing cast, with, of course, Price as Prof. Jarrod, Charles Bronson (billed as Charles Buchinsky) as his mute lackey Igor, Carolyn Jones, later gaining fame as the “Addams Family” matriarch Morticia, and more- we’ll tell you about the cast, with plenty of information on the production, including an odd irony regarding the director Andre DeToth. And- yes, you’ll see the famed “paddleball” scene, which may have been impressive in 3-D, but now seems fairly goofy! You’ll also get Nostalgiaferatoo and the Imp in action, a look at a display of great horror film artifacts and props, a new visit wit our old pal from “Halloween 3” Tom Atkins, and more!

Then- get set for the premiere of “House of Svengoolie- a new offering under our Svengoolie umbrella, with the Sven Squad presenting a landmark film from the late great creator of “The Muppets” Jim Henson- a unique fantasy film- “Labyrinth”! It’s the story of 16-year-old Sarah, whose annoyance with her baby brother compels her to wish he would be taken away by the goblins in the book she’s reading “The Labyrinth”. When the boy, Toby, disappears, the goblin king Jareth appears- and offers an ultimatum- solve his labyrinth in 13 hours and find Toby- or the child will become a goblin forever!

A dwarf helps her enter the labyrinth, where she encounters all manners of beasts and creatures both fair and foul- leading to a confrontation in a bizarre castle where Sarah must face Jareth alone in a last-ditch attempt to save her brother.

This amazing 1986 movie, directed by Henson, written by “Monty Python”s Terry Jones and executive produced by George Lukas, stars the beautiful Jennifer Connelly as Sarah, David Bowie as Jareth, and a multitude of puppet creatures from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. Gwen, Imp and Nostalgiaferatoo add merriment, music and mayhem to the proceedings in their very first movie hosting!

The double feature of “House of Wax” and “Labyrinth” in MeTV begins tonight at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central time. As always, you are invited to live-Tweet along with the many Sven fans who are on Twitter during the show-please make sure to include the hashtag #svengoolie in all your Tweets! I like seeing the threesome. I wonder if they are somehow the heirs apparent or at least will do more. Sven might be thinking of pulling back a bit perhap? Anyway, Labyrinth is so painful to sit through. This movie needs riffing. What were they thinking. Someone should have showed them The Five Fingers of Dr. T. There is a similarity to its awfulness. They may have then changed their minds in producing this dog. The Dark Crystal is a better movie. I was bit annoyed at the opening showing the elf or whatever he is called, urinating. Why? Because they could? It is out of place and give you a hint of how bad this film is going to be.

I never knew Julie London (nurse Dixie McCall) was married to both Jack Webb (Joe Friday) and Bobby Troup (Dr Joe Early)?
What can I say, she had a thing for guys named Joe.

How’d you miss that? Think it’s been talked about here on the blog a few times as well.
I think I might've been half asleep?

I was feeling "ugly sick" Saturday night (well enough to be distressed by how awful I felt). This is not the way any of us wants to celebrate Halloween season! Even so, it was so wonderful to have a Svengoolie Double Feature, and several episodes of of Kolchak to ease me through the experience. The evening deserved my complete attention, but it still made a difficult time considerably more tolerable. Many thanks, Sven & company!

And yes - I am now firmly back among the living.😎

Glad to hear.

BTW, thanks for the card. Mine should be going out in a day or two.

Yep, Bela Lugosi was the first actor to have played Dracula in about Anerican film. 🦇
DrSerizawa Duhlmann0406 8 hours ago
I am grinding my way through a book entitled Hollywood Gothic by David Skal. His books are usually very entertaining, but this one, about the journey of Dracula from book to play to film is very slow going.

After Bram Stoker's death his widow fought tooth (fang?) and nail to protect her copyright. Acting companies and film makers who wanted to use the story without paying her. FW Murnsu just shrugged his shoulders, called his film Nosferatu and set it in Germany. She got an injunction against the film's exhibition and nearly had all copies destroyed.

Universal hot the rights to the authorized stage play that starred an unknown Hungarian who couldn't speak English. Had Lon Chaney lived he would have played the Count and Universal had Conrad Veidt lined up. But Bela's performance, and his low salary, won him the part.

All this is interesting, but when it's surrounded by page after page of legal wrangling it makes for a slow read.

Join my club 🙄. Using a phone is how I blog. It’s easier and less cumbersome…for me anyways.

Part 11 of haunted places of Bucks County PA

THE INN AT PHILLIPS MILL: Phillips' Mill was built in 1756 by Aaron Phillips as a water powered grist mill which was operated for over a century. In 1894, an artist named William Lathrop was drawn to the area where he established a home and studio. It emerged as the intellectual center of a growing community of artists and is recognized as the birthplace of Pennsylvania Impressionism. The mill was also used as a playhouse, a community center, and in 1917, became the Holmquist School for Girls. The famed anthropologist Margaret Mead was once a student there. Over the years it was transformed into a lovely estate home and In 1972 a portion of the property was turned iinto TIAPM.

The structure of TIAPM is authentic to its era; visitors need to appreciate it as it is. The bedrooms are too small and the ceilings too low. Visitors need to be willing to enjoy a historic estate home of the 18th century. The resident spirit entities would agree.

MANIFESTATIONS
Several entities are thought to live here, but one female entity seems to be the dominant presence. She is described as being a stately, upper class woman. This refined entity has been seen all over the house, including the second floor hallway, and sitting in a rocking chair on the second floor. She appears clearly enough to be described in detail. Sometimes people see her dressed in a high-necked white blouse, black skirt, and sturdy leather boots. She wears her hair pinned on top of her head. Other times, she is seen wearing a high-collared dress that is long and narrow-waisted. This spectral lady of the house is either too busy with her agenda, or just doesn’t want to communicate directly with the people in her house. She does have the habit of brushing past people who are standing on the stairs. People feel a cool mass that pushes them gently to one side, which may be her way of letting the living know she is there as well.

Thanks Catbat. I am doing well. My foot is healing from surgery and I’ve recovered from 5 days in the hospital due to an infection. I will golf with friends Wednesday.

Keep that recovery going. Good luck with the sports ball game on Wednesday.
I’ve really enjoyed the spooky stories. Been fun to read. Not sure I would want to stay there, but I know people who would.

"Several entities are thought to _live_ here…” [emphasis mine]?!?

Interesting choice of words, Aceman! I’ve been enjoying your series. I’ve heard of Lathrop, but I can’t remember which of his works caught my eye—he’s got a lot paintings in the National Gallery, so mebbe one of my visits to Washington, or mebbe it was as an illustration to Frost’s “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” in a school reader. Margaret Mead is natural favorite of mine, since I’ve got a degree in anthropology. Her home life with her parents was a little weird, as I recall, but mebbe not so much for turn-of-the-century people (note the origins of American breakfast cereals from that time). In her school days, Mead had a bit of a young Natalie Merchant vibe, especially after she bobbed her hair.

Glad you have enjoyed the series! I've tried to combine ghost stories with history and its required more work than I thought it would. Your knowledge of many topics has always amazed me.
