Peter Cushing Has No Escape From the “Island of Terror”- Tonight!

Posted on May 9, 2015

A simple missing person case becomes the threshold to a deadly threat that could destroy all living creatures- including humans- with no escape possible From the "Island of Terror"!

This creepy 1966 British horror film, starring Peter Cushing, starts out simply enough with some weird experimentation  at a facility on Petrie's Island- a small bit of land off the coast of Ireland. Shortly afterwards, a local constable gets a visit from a farmer's wife- it seems her husband has gone missing. The constable finally finds the man in a cave- dead- and seemingly missing his skeletal system! Local doctor  Landers is summoned , but this is so far beyond anything he knows- he sets off to the mainland to get some help from a London university expert, one Dr. Stanley (Cushing).

When the situation puzzles even the learned Stanley, he suggests they get the opinion of bone expert  David West- and walk in on his date with sultry rich girl Toni Merrill- who volunteers her daddy's private copter as a way to get to the island faster to investigate this mystifying case. They're dropped off, and are pretty much stuck on the island when the copter must fly off to handle some important business.

Getting wind of a secret laboratory being used for cancer research, our group heads there- only to find there are more boneless bodies- and that some strange and deadly new silicon-based life form may have been inadvertently created at the lab- and is now on the loose and multiplying! Our heroes must try to use the laboratory notes they have found to determine exactly what they are fighting- and if there is any chance that they can stop it before it wipes out everything alive on the island!

This movie certainly earns the "terror" in its title- there's plenty of shock and tension, and Peter Cushing is, as always, outstanding. The feel of the rural island and the isolation of the victims is really effective, and the sound effects in the film add to the fright factor- we'll tell you about them, the cast (which includes notable actors like Edward Judd), and more- plus, we'll provide you with some Sven shtick- including a commercial parody that may just curb your appetite (though, not for our sponsor Little Caesar's Pizza, hopefully!)

You can visit the "Island of Terror" tonight on MeTV at 10 pm eastern/pacific, 9 pm central time, or, in other areas, please check your local listings. If you are in the Chicago area, you can catch the movie that ran on MeTV last week to rave reviews,"Man Made Monster"- starring Lon Chaney Jr.- at 11 am on our sister station, WCIU, the U.

Also in the Chicago area- I've heard that this Sunday night's edition of the food show "Chicago's Best" will featured the Svengoolie burger at Lincoln Park's "Squared Circle" restaurant!

And, if you're a Chicago area fan who's good with trivia- you can help out the Brookfield AAZK by taking part in the "Elephant Trivia Night" coming up at the Brookfield VFW Hall -8844 Ogden Ave. in Brookfield-on Friday, May 29th. No, you don't have to know elephant trivia- teams will tackle ten rounds of ten questions, with subjects like movies, TV,the Beatles, etc. There's a cash prize for the winning team, plus a raffle of some cool items- including artwork actually made by elephants! The entry fees and all money donated go to the "96 Elephants" organization which works to bring attention to the ivory crisis affecting the majestic beasts in Africa. There will be a cash bar, and you may bring your own food and non-alcoholic beverages. Though I will be unable to attend- I have sponsored a "Svengoolie" table that you can join- so, please go to the AAZK website - http://brookfieldaazk.org/ - and make sure you mention you want to be part of "Team Svengoolie". Get some friends together to donate and  show your vast trivia knowledge- and thanks for helping another very worthy AAZK cause.

Thanks for the nice comments on our participation in the "Those Were the Days" anniversary radio program- I'm not sure, but it may still be available for one final day, today, in the archive at www.nostalgiadigest.com . It was really as much fun to listen to as it was to perform in it!

Tune in for the terror tonight-we'll save you a spot on the island!
