Rondo Hatton Moves In to the "House of Horrors"- Tonight!

Posted on August 25, 2018

Tonight on MeTV-  we wind up our month of classics with the chilling tale of an artist driven to desperate acts to achieve artistic acclaim- using a frightening and powerful  figure as his pawn to take revenge! Learn the actual story of the actor who became known as the "Monster Without Make-Up"-in his most famous role as the terrifying “Creeper”- when we enter the "House of Horrors"!

The story opens when a nearly destitute artist sees his fortune turning the corner, when he finally  has a customer ready to buy one of his latest –uh- “unusual”-works of art! Unfortunately, his would- be patron brings along an acerbic art critic, whose disparaging remarks about the artist’s  “masterpiece” changes the man's mind – and puts the kibosh on his purchase! The artist ,Marcel, then wanders the streets , dejected, and contemplates doing himself in at the river- only to spot a half-drowned stranger in the waters! Still having a sense of decency in spite of his depression, he takes this odd individual back to his home to recover. This misshapen man with unusual frightening looks- which inspire Marcel- feels gratitude towards the artist, who is thinking this man with the bizarre features could be the subject of a new and amazing artistic creation! As things go along, Marcel discovers that his new "friend" has a questionable past- he just happens to be a sadistic serial killer! Knowing that the hulking brute feels he owes Marcel, the artist has no sense of fear, but conjures up a plan to use his new-found model as an instrument of revenge- setting him on the trail of those who have made the artist’s life miserable, who he feels have made it their mission to stifle his career!

Marcel works on a huge realistic depiction of his grateful model, and keeps him a secret from the world. One day, he is visited by a pretty newspaper reporter, who happens to have an artist boyfriend who shares his distaste for the nasty critic who cost Marcel his sale, who has printed derisive comments about him as well. There are worse things in store than just bad reviews-when, one by one, art critics start turning up dead. The reporter's boyfriend suddenly heads the list of possible suspects. Even more bad luck-when the reporter  finally sees what Marcel's latest project is- and starts doing her homework like any good reporter would- what she finds leads to HER heading to the top of a different list- Marcel’s hit list! Will the massive murdering model remove any threat of exposure by eliminating one more victim?

This 1946 film was actually the return of the "Creeper" character that Rondo first portrayed in the Sherlock Holmes film “Pearl of Death”. Universal had high hopes for the character, and  planned to have him the star in a series of films, but Rondo passed away before that could happen. We’ll give you an in-depth look at Rondo's real life story, thanks to research done by  film-maker Fred Olen Ray- we’ll introduce you to familiar faces in the cast- including one you'll  see right after our show on  "Super Sci Fi Saturday Night!" There's a lot of Sven segment fun, and speaking of works of art- we repeat the special feature showing how our striking Sven dungeon set was created and constructed by our own artist genius friends from the Acme Design Inc. company of Elgin, Il.

Also, after we originally recorded the biographical info about Rondo, we learned I was mispronouncing the disease that caused his disfigurement- acromegaly. My apologies, and we make a correction of this in our mail segment.  And, yes, Rondo is for whom the national horror genre awards, in his image, are named and designed- of which I’ve been the proud recipient of several, thanks to the votes of our kind fans.

Enter the “House of Horrors” on METV tonight at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central,  or check for time and channel in your local listings- or at www.metv.com.  As always, MeTV hopes you’ll join the scores of Sven fans who will be live-Tweeting during the show on Twitter- using the hashtag #svengoolie. Our Chicago area viewers get to visit another house one more time- the “House of Frankenstein”- on WCIU at 11 am.

Many thanks go to everyone who attended and contributed to the “Bowling for Rhinos” event sponsored by the Lincoln Park Zoo branch of the AAZK. Once again, it was a fun and successful event, and your support for wild rhinos makes a big difference in the world of wildlife preservation.

A quick appearance update- I will be appearing at the C2E2 booth at the big wrestling convention “Starrcast” on Saturday, September 1st ! I’ll be signing from 1:30 to 3:30 pm at the Hyatt Regency Schaumburg Chicago. Come see me and a wide assortment of pro wrestlers and personalities -past and present!

Tonight- wrestle with a dangerous villain of vengeance in the “House of  Horrors”!

Last comment about Rondo Hatton. IMO I think he was much more handsome in his later years. And while his acting was a bit wooden he did have a wonderful voice. It's sad that he didn't live long enough to spread his wings.

Catbat, so what did Remy decide on, Svengoolie III, Grandson of Svengoolie, or Remington Uhlmann?

As we prepare to close up the House of Horrors finally and welcome the sound of 5,000 fingers on the keyboards, I was thinking again of that opening scene in which Marcel breaks the bad news to his cat, Pietro, that there's no milk, just bread and cheese for dinner. It reminded me of a story our mom used to tell us. She had a pet cat that she and her brothers and sisters would feed leftover spaghetti and meat sauce to. If there wasn't enough sauce on her pasta, the cat would let the kids know by meowing loudly, until they added more. Obviously, that cat wasn't dumb! The story reminded me, too, of the Creeper's whining to Marcel about their own meager repast, "No meat?"

Almost forgot I had these. In honor of Sven’s involvement with Lincoln Park Zoo’s “Bowling for Rhinos” fundraiser, here’s a couple of pics I took last year at Lincoln Park Zoo when I was in Chicago for The Big Blogcast 2/Flashback Weekend.

Can anyone (Dale) comment on a Film I have not seen for over 40+ years.
"The Horror of Party Beach"........
daleuhlmann BigBlueNYC1958 74 months ago
Sure thing, Big Blue. This low budgeted shocker, directed by Del Tenney, has gained some cult popularity for its reputation as the first eco-horror film. In this dinner winner, toxic waste dropped into the ocean near an East Coast beach front turns the skeletons of sailors drowned in a ship sinking, and water plants, into grotesque half-fish, half-human monsters. Tenney later directed that same year two other horror films, THE CURSE OF THE LIVING CORPSE and I EAT YOUR SKIN. The latter film was re-released to TV in the 1980's under a new title, ZOMBIE.

William, Holy Toledo! I remember watching this movie on TV back in the 1970s. The MST3K people had plenty of fun with this one.

Greetings, gang.
First off, to Ravenwoman, my condolences on the loss of your beloved pet, Kraus. I hope you can find comfort in all the memories of his companionship.
I recently had the opportunity to watch the old masters of horror in some prime classic "cheese"-The Raven. In which Vincent P., Boris K, and Peter Lorre get to ham it up, and The Terror, where Jack Nicholson costars. He also costars in the other film as Lorre's son. Alas, if Sven/Rich could only get the rights from MGM, who now own the AIP titles(according to what I read)both Sven and all of us would be in classic horror heaven. However, The Terror is, from what I can understand, firmly in the public domain, and I watched it on my high definition tv, and it wasn't grainy or blurry. I think that there is one exception to the copyright, as Roger Corman actually added some footage he shot with the actor who played the servant years after the fact, and added it onto the movie. This did give him some rights, but only to the print with the new stuff, and only in Europe where he planned to release it. The original is still, I read, in the public domain.

Lucy: The actor who played the servant in THE TERROR was Corman favorite Dick Miller. Besides his Corman films (most notably his starring role in A BUCKET OF BLOOD), Miller appeared in such genre films as THE HOWLING and GREMLINS.

Lucy! So sorry! I missed your comment all the way down here in the depths of the blog! Thank you so much for your kind sentiments! I miss him so much it's painful. He was suffering, so I had no other options. Heartbreaking and gut wrenching to see any animal cry in pain. 💓💋🗽

Hey, BigBlue,
I'll be breaking out some fall decor over the next week, too, though I wont do any Halloween decor until closer to the holiday. There will be plenty of pumpkins(or "punkings," as my son used to say when he was a little guy)and orange and yellow leaves around to spruce up the joint.

Great news Catbat. Did Remington change his name to Winchester, or is that a loaded question?
Was not "Remington Steele" a TV show with Pierce Brosnan

Today being August 31, I have 1 event and a couple of birthdays I would like to share with you. I am sure Kodak Kid will have more to share with us. Let`s start with the event:
1997 Princess Diana of Wales dies in a car accident.
Now, the Birthdays:
Fredrick March was born on today in 1897 He died in 1975.
Mr. March was mostly known for starring in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
He was slightly less known for being born in Racine, Wisconsin. I got one for you Dave!
Another Lady killer, Richard Gere is 69 today according to my girlfriend, he is still HOT.
For all of you baseball fans.
Frank Robinson is 83 today. Maybe his most note worthy accomplishment is that he is the only player to be named the mVP in both leagues!
daleuhlmann JournalJeff2 74 months ago
Frank Robinson was also MLB's first big league African American manager. He began his major league managing career with my Cleveland Indians, from 1975-1977. For the first two of those seasons, he was a player-manager.
