Scream Along with Vincent Price- as You Feel "The Tingler" Tonight!

Posted on November 10, 2018

We head back into the gimmick-laden world of scaremaster William Castle tonight on MeTV- with the double dynamite of a film featuring the great Vincent Price- and a creepy creature that supposedly lies in wait inside us all, patiently dormant until we are given a strong fright- which can unleash the power of- “the Tingler”!

This 1959 horror introduces us to Price as Dr. Warren Chapin , a pathologist juggling his research on the effects of fear on humans with his stressful interactions  with his unfaithful, scheming wife. He finds comfort in his warm relationship with his wife’s young sister  and her boyfriend , who helps him in his work. The doctor does the autopsy on a man who went to the electric chair- and is shocked (not like the victim) to find his spine has been shattered-  electricity wouldn’t do that. Chapin theorizes that something tied in with fear itself makes that happen- and playing off the fact that one’s spine tingles in such situations-he has named  that something “the Tingler”.

He has met the executed mans’ brother- Ollie- a weird little man who runs a theatre specializing in silent films. Ironically, Ollie’s wife is also silent- a deaf mute- and while the doctor is visiting and accidentally cuts himself, the woman faints at the sight of his blood! Chapin theorizes that she does so as a release from her fear- and that, her being unable to scream- perhaps it’s screaming that diminishes the Tingler’s power. He heads home, only to observe his wife cheating with some other man- and, stages a confrontation that will trigger fear in the horrid woman. He then x-rays her, which shows him that some bizarre centipede-like creature grows on the spine as fear sets in- he has discovered the actual Tingler!

Chapin, eager to learn more about fear, subjects himself to an LSD trip ( the first ever depicted on film!)- to no avail- but quite the opposite happens at the apartment of Ollie and his wife- when she awakens to all sorts of unexplainable ( or are they?) horrors- and the poor mute woman dies of fright! Ollie brings her body to Chapin, who performs an autopsy- and finds the now-enlarged Tingler on her spine. He removes it and , after some slight turmoil, imprisons it in a box. Of course, the Tingler ends up on the loose again and again- eventually in the silent movie theater, where Chapin’s theory that the only defense against the creature is to scream is put to the ultimate test!

This is another film that Sven fans have asked to see- and both those familiar with Castle’s films and first-time viewers will enjoy the exploitative horror. Just as we explained the gimmick used in “13 Ghosts”, we also explain how Castle’s presentation of “Percept-o” worked-  introduce you to our cast, and offer you a home tutorial that will tickle your tonsils- as well as bringing you a new song! We also discuss the appearance of some color in the black and white movie- about which there are all sorts of theories, some incredibly far-fetched.

"The Tingler” starts tingling tonight on MeTV at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central, or if you’re unsure of when we run in your area, check time and channel in your local listings or at www.metv.com . MeTV reminds you- if you join the legions of Sven fans live-Tweeting during the show on Twitter, always use the hashtag #svengoolie.  In the Chicago viewing area, "Gargoyles" takes flight, one last time, at 11 am on WCIU, the U.

Still for sale in our store, along with the “so much sleeve” long sleeved Sven tees, are the Sven costume t shirts- suitable to wear even outside the  Halloween season! A special piece of merchandise could be looming on the horizon as well…maybe…possibly….

Get set to feel a sign in your spine tonight on MeTV- and be ready to scream for your life!

I would have to say that my favorite Twilight Zone ending narration would have to be "A Stopover in a Quiet Town:"

"The moral of what you've just seen is clear. If you drink, don't drive. And if your wife has had a couple, she shouldn't drive either. You might both just wake up with a whale of a headache in a deserted village in the Twilight Zone."

"Suspended in time and space for a moment, your introduction to Miss Janet Tyler, who lives in a very private world of darkness. A universe whose dimensions are the size, thickness, length of the swath of bandages that cover her face. In a moment we will go back into this room, and also in a moment we will look under those bandages. Keeping in mind of course that we are not to be surprised by what we see, for this isn't just a hospital, and this patient 307 is not just a woman. This happens to be the Twilight Zone, and Miss Janet Tyler, with you, is about to enter it."

Oh yes, "A New World Record" is one of their best albums...it also has "do ya do ya want my love"....i also liked Jeff Lynne's work with Tom Petty

I hear ya. That was the first ELO album that I bought back in the day. Great album. Jeff Lynne did some great work with The Travelin' Wilburys. "The Wilbury Twist" is another one of my favorite tunes. I believe that was from their second album.
Flyboy 1MikeM 71 months ago
Yes! I had forgotten about that....thats one album i dont have....may have to look for it

Being literally petrified by the "The Gorgon" (or "The Monilith Monsters" for that matter) is creepier to me than the later splatter kind of horror. For that matter, the idea of having my personality erased by the "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" was deep horror too.
Flyboy Carl_N_Brown 71 months ago
Absolutely! I have a German Import of The Monolith Monsters on bluray...i converted it to 3D.....one of my favorites...i love Grant Williams.....i'm waiting for Monster on the Campus....i have the dvd but i want it on bluray...
Flyboy Carl_N_Brown 71 months ago
The Monolith Monsters was very unique...i cant say i've ever seen a movie like it before or since....
Carl_N_Brown Flyboy 71 months ago
Kind like "X -the Unknown" the "monster" was an impersonal force of nature seemingly unstoppable.
Flyboy Carl_N_Brown 71 months ago
YES!...another excellent one....you have good taste, my friend
Flyboy 71 months ago
So this time tomorrow night we should all be as hard as a rock.....from the Gorgon i mean....lol

yeah in the right frame of mind..hahaha....seriously, Taxi is awesome......When it was originally on, it came on every Thursday night, back to back with SOAP...i watched them both...
Flyboy daleuhlmann 71 months ago
The Taxi episodes available for streaming on MeTV are great but the best ones aren't even there.....in fact, there is a 2 part one that they have part 1 but not part 2....like what sense does that make?...and part 2 is the funniest one!
Flyboy daleuhlmann 71 months ago
I guess i'll have to settle for the Forensic Files....those are always good, only i've seen them all about elevendy-six times.....if i hear the name "Traci Jo Shine" ONE MORE TIME...just ONE MORE TIME...POW! RIGHT IN THE KISSAH!!!"
Flyboy 71 months ago
I don't like WKRP.....gotta find something to watch....i wish they'd show Taxi again....i need an Elaine Nardo fix.....

Flyboy: A little earlier in the blog you mentioned Frank Sutton's contributions to GOMER PYLE. I always thought he was a very underrated performer. He was excellent as one of Ernest Borgnine's close friends in the 1955 classic MARTY, for which Borgnine won a Best Actor Oscar.
Flyboy daleuhlmann 71 months ago
yes and he's on the Twilight Zone too!...lol....he was on "The Dummy" with Cliff Robertson, i think.....either that one or the Jackie Cooper one
daleuhlmann Flyboy 71 months ago
Right you are--very good TZ episode.

oh this is the one where andy and helen go on a picnic by the lake and barney keeps interrupting them

Tonight's Gomer Pyle is the one where the sailor talks Gomer into gambling and lets him win so he will bring all his marine buddies back and the sailor cleans them out..hahahha

Catbat, dear: One of your favorites is on the first episode of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW tonight: Denver Pyle.

There's gotta be a joke about Catbat having an ice-cold backside in there, somewhere. 😆 Glad you're on the mend, can't help but think about ya'll with the terrible fires going on.

Dale, yeah I hear ya about getting the new TV GUIDE every week when I was a kid back in the seventies. It was excellent. I always looked forward to it. I would always check to see what movies were playing on the CBS Friday Night Movie which came on at 8 PM Central Time. Some great sci-fi movies on there. I also checked for the CBS Late Friday Night Movie which came on at 10:30 PM Central Time. They had some great horror movies. Some Hammer horror movies like Dracula has risen from the grave. Stuff like that I guess CBS definitely didn't want to show during primetime.
