See The Role That Charged Up Lon Chaney Jr.'s Career- "Man Made Monster"-Tonight!

Posted on January 23, 2021

This Saturday night on MeTV- you’re sure to get a charge out of what we have in store- some fun from way before conventions were halted due to the pandemic, and a classic visit from one of our favorite WWE Hall of Famers- all wrapped around what is considered Lon Chaney Jr.’s very first entry into true horror films in a literally shocking performance! It’s the tale of a cruel and devious scientist who uses Lon’s incredible tolerance for electricity to transform him into the “Man Made Monster”!

The story begins on a stormy night- on dangerous roads slicked by rain. We witness a bus losing control and skidding into an electrical tower, resulting in the tragic death of the driver and every single passenger- except one. That survivor is rushed to the hospital, where the medical staff is astounded to find he has not only survived the accident- but is, in fact, hardly affected by it at all!  The attending physician, Dr. Lawrence, discovers that the survivor is none other than “Dynamo Dan”- a carnival sideshow star whose act involves him exposing himself to high electrical current as entertainment! All this prior exposure to huge doses of electricity appears to have played a part in his survival. The doctor, intrigued, invites Dan to move into his home research facility, so he can be studied and he can ascertain that the “previous exposure” theory is valid.

Dan cheerfully moves in, and finds the place to be a great haven for him- because the doctor’s pretty daughter also lives there- and – he gets to play with the family’s dog. However, there is a dark cloud in this happy existence, though nobody knows it at first- provided by the doctor's in-house co-worker- Dr. Rigas. Rigas has his own agenda- he wants to  prove his personal theory that living creatures can be altered and mutated to survive strictly on electricity! He’s been experimenting with lesser life forms, but now that "Dynamo Dan” is available as a human subject – he sets out to covertly experiment on the human sideshow attraction, while keeping his plans secret from Dr. Lawrence.

Rigas begins to experiment, subjecting Dan to massive amounts of electricity, never revealing the real reason to his cooperative subject. This experimentation, however, changes Dan -both physically and emotionally. The Lawrence family soon takes notice, and are concerned about Dan’s well-being. Regardless, the experimentation continues- and Rigas charges Dan with such devastating power that he becomes , literally, what his carnival moniker suggested - a human dynamo! Dan emits an unearthly glow and possesses unfathomable raw electrical force- now becoming an electrified zombie, completely under the control of the man who "created" him! Rigas commands Dan to do his bidding, unleashing his power on anyone who gets in Rigas’ way. This “Man Made Monster” soon is  terrorizing the countryside – incredibly unstoppable and seemingly unable to be killed!

This 1941 film has some interesting special effects for its time, and definitely has some frightening moments. For those viewers who are used to Lon Chaney as the brooding, fatalistic Larry Talbot, or as the haunted characters he played in the “Inner Sanctum” series, it may come as a surprise to see Lon portraying such a happy-go-lucky fellow at the start of this film. Reportedly, this film actually got Lon his perennial role as Talbot, the Wolf Man. We'll tell you about the film’s cast, and send up some clips from the film in Svensurround.

Also, we bring back a vintage visit from our friend,  WWE Hall of Famer, best-selling author, and Santa Claus enthusiast, the one and only Mick Foley- who regales us with stories about himself and his family, his love of the Universal films, and the “20 Years of Hell” tour was on at the time ( chronicling his astounding wrestling match with the iconic Undertaker, in which Mick took some horrendous falls off the top of a massive steel cage!) There is some dated material mentioned, since Mick, like most folks, cannot be on tour now, due to the COVID crisis- and, in fact, recently tested positive for the virus- but is doing okay. We’ll top off this visit, after the short movie, with Mick as the ONLY contestant in a game show especially geared towards him! Plus- we remember the fun of conventions with a look back at the 2018  C2E2 comics and entertainment convention at Chicago’s McCormick Place- including a look at some of the incredible costumes!

"Man Made Monster" lights up MeTV tonight at 8pm eastern/pacific, 7central, or check your local listings (or www.metv.com) for time and channel. Remember that MeTV invites you to support our show by live-tweeting during the program on Twitter- usually making us trend very high nationally every week! Our local Chicago viewers can dive into an encore of "Creature from the Black Lagoon” on our main local station, the CW26, at 11 am.

Please make sure to check out our Sven merchandise – just click on the store tab here on our site. The numbers of Sven Studio Sets and At Home boxes is gradually dwindling, so, if you have an interest in them, you might want to order- once they are gone- they’re gone!

Join us tonight when Dr. Rigas yells “Charge!”- and  Lon Chaney Jr. is “charged” with “battery”- or, becomes one!

The old guy in tonight’s Perry Mason wasn’t that one of the townsfolk from Andy Griffith Show?
Drang MADave 46 months ago
Will Wright? IMDB says he had a recurring role.

Bert Convy must have been pretty young when he did this...

Aceman2 I thought you were referring to the little guy and not that big dude so I guess I didn't win? ☹️
Aceman2 MADave 46 months ago
The little guy does look a bit like Chico but he is actually Jerry Lewis and not the wrestler I was alluding to. Interesting enough, the actor I am looking for appeared in multiple movies that Jerry Lewis starred in.

Aceman2 I’m pretty sure I know who your wrestler is but I don’t think I should say it. I get myself in enough trouble without any help. 🤣

Just FYI:

I saw “The Amazing Colossal Man” on a movie based show on WABC Channel 7 Called “The Big Show”. It was on Weekdays at 4:30 and Wednesday was Sci-Fi Day. They showed “The Spider” (same movie) the following week. The “ACM” is seen on the marquee of a local theater with the kid working there telling his friends about the movie where the guy grows to be 80 (Yes 80 and not the film’s actual 60) feet tall. “TACM” got a plug in several AIP films (Such as “Attack of the Puppet People”).
Aceman2 Bill_K 46 months ago
Difficult to see but the posters for both “The Amazing Colossal Man” and “Attack of the Puppet People” appear in this scene from ”The Spider” .

Good Afternoon, Everyone:

I won’t be posting tonight although this is a favorite film of mine coming up.

I know who it is.
Aceman2 Jack 46 months ago
Not James Arness but our mystery man may have met him in a movie where James had a cameo appearance!
Jack Aceman2 46 months ago
I knew who it was between the obligatory James Arness answer and Earthquake McGoon. The answer is cleverly encoded in between in a two-step manner that is readily decipherable by midgets hiding in chess-playing automatons.

I read in the Newsletter that tomorrow’s movie “Earth vs. the Spider” is new to Svengoolie’s Show and it is a B movie. Good B movies are lots of fun, very entertaining IMO!
I watched the trailer that LarryThe TrainGuy posted (thanks for posting it Larry) and the movie looks super cheesy and fun! So I’m thinking to do a cheese pizza w/extra cheese for the event! I know that’s not very imaginative but hey, you usually can’t go wrong w/pizza! Maybe I’ll top it w/Flamin’ Hot Cheetos, after all Svengoolie night is my cheat night! 😂
Klaatu CrazyK 46 months ago
Are you anywhere near a Trader Joe’s? I just finished their Flatbread Pizza with Burrata, Prosciutto & Arugula and it was dang good!!!

Well, as we bid farewell and adieu to Dr. Rigas and Dynamo Dan, the Electrical Man, some of you may be wondering why Realart reissued the film in 1953 under the title THE ATOMIC MONSTER. Well, the studio felt that an electrically-powered monster would no longer hold quite the same mystique for 1950s audience living in dread of the atomic bomb and radiation: Hence, the title change, to compete with other movies featuring atomic-created horrors.

I have never seen a print of Realart's re-release of MAN MADE MONSTER as THE ATOMIC MONSTER, so I have no way of knowing if the company edited out references to electricity--not likely, since there are too many of them that removing them would probably not have been cost-effective, especially for a pinch-penny like Jack Broder, who owned and operated the studio. Nor do I don't think they would have taken either the time or the money to dub over the word "radiation" or "atomic energy" whenever "electricity" or its synonyms were mentioned, either. Probably they felt the new title was sufficient.

Now, the man largely responsible for those title changes and associated new advertising campaigns for Realart's 1950s re-releases of Universal's 1930-1946 films was a fellow named James H. Nicholson. He played a pivotal role in the formation of the studio that was responsible for movies like tomorrow's Sven feature, which I will discuss in my Midnight (or thereabouts!) movie review.
Klaatu daleuhlmann 46 months ago
Nothing can be better for the “Drop, Duck & Cover” generation than Atomic monsters. A day without Atomic? Nope.
daleuhlmann Klaatu 46 months ago
Good point, Klaatu. Although the new title really wasn't accurate, it probably sold more tickets than if the original title had been retained.
Jack daleuhlmann 46 months ago
Well, electrons *are* part of an atom. And electricity and radiation both make things glow. Even if they had redubbed the movie, I can’t help imagine that it’d sound like SvenSurround.
Klaatu 46 months ago
To quote Dr. Smith...Oh the pain, the pain. It’s my day off from work and it’s cold, rainy and my duties are done. Now, what to watch? A Svengoolie movie, Mysterious Island or Lost In Space from my DVR? Another Sci-Fi movie from my DVD collection? Oh the pain. I can’t decide. I do have a cozy fire, so I think Svengoolie might be the answer.
daleuhlmann Klaatu 46 months ago
Well, as the tiger Shere Khan (voiced by George Sanders) in Disney's delightful adaptation of Rudyard Kipling's THE JUNGLE BOOK, might have observed, "How delightful!"

Haven’t researched it but have been told that statistics show increases in arrests, labor & delivery and psych admissions ~ gotta love a good, juicy full moon ~

Even though not horror-related, still s passing of much note: actress Cicely Tyson has passed away at the age of 96. I particularly remember her for SOUNDER and THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF MISS JANE PITTMAN. RIP, Ms. Tyson.
Jack daleuhlmann 46 months ago
Cicely Tyson was in a 1992 made-for-TV sci-fi movie, _Duplicates_, an episode of the 2000 revival of _Outer Limits_, and appeared in the 2013 theaterical release horror-thriller, _The Haunting in Connecticut 2: Ghosts of Georgia_. Altho’ not in the horror and sci-fi genres, as the lead in 1974’s _The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman_, Tyson’s stunning age make-up was done by Rick Baker, Stan Winston, and scion of the Westmore makeup family, Marvin G. Westmore (he was Bud’s nephew).
Lynn Jack 46 months ago
Great tie-ins, Jack - thanks!
daleuhlmann Jack 46 months ago
Well, then, I guess a Cicely Tyson post does involve some horror-sci-fi identification. What a tremendous actress she was!

Well u need to put more update movies the old ones are great need new stuff, and dig the old horror movies when I was a teenager please more female vampire movies
PatS PaulGoldston 46 months ago
Biggest problem that I've seen is finding movies that fit the 2-hour time slot and allow for commercials, announcements, Sven content and all. "Modern" movies tend to be a lot longer and we hate to have them scissored to death. Plus we're family-friendly so not inclined to movies that rely on explosions and gore. Can you list some titles?
Cessna1960 PatS 46 months ago
PatS you hit on an important point about Sven having to choose films with a manageable run time....I don't remember where I saw it but it was said a typical 30 minute comedy or drama show is actually 22 minutes of actual content with 8 minutes of commercial time....an hour show is around 45 minutes with the rest for advertising.....I could be wrong on the actual run time details....a lot of movie sites gives the actual run time of the movies , even old films....maybe when we post a movie title we could also post it's run time and it might catch the Sven tech's eyes quicker and help weed out the longer films that wouldn't fit the 2 hour block.....I don't know , just throwing some ideas around here !! hahahahaha...
Drang Cessna1960 46 months ago
This is another reason I keep saying they need to give Sven a 3 hour time block. The 60-minute "Man-made Monster" from 2 weeks ago is a rare example, for a long time 90 minutes was more common, but these days we are used to 120 minute running time, which means that even something totally innocuous (meaning no skin, no gore) would need to be trimmed or "compressed", even if on a show where no one watches expecting a lot of extra material. That's why the cable movie channels have a lot of fillers, with reminiscences or old newsreels and short features, to fill in the gaps. (Along with trying to sell you their memberships and subscriptions.)
Jack Drang 46 months ago
Now they’ve got ’toons on MeTV, that’d be perfect filler to pad a three-hour time slot. Or else they could pair shorter Svengoolie movies with episodes from really short-lived series, or even use the periodic excess time to test run shows for potential programming. Of course, there’s prob’ly some sort of licensing restriction that makes those unworkable.
