She's Got Great Legs- and Fifty Feet! "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman"- Tonight!

Posted on November 30, 2019

Okay- you say you STILL haven’t had enough turkey? Well, we’ve got a real turkey for you tonight on MeTV, though a highly entertaining one! You’ll get a queen-sized helping of a troubled beauty who has an alien encounter- that makes her a big woman in town, ready to knock the stuffing out of anyone who crosses her!! It’s not an attack of indigestion- it’s the “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman”!

This 1958 sci-fi favorite opens with a newscast- featuring reports of sightings of a fireball streaking across the sky over various locations! Its current trajectory would bring it directly over the California desert. This proves to be more than accurate, as a woman driving on a desert road not only spots it- but almost runs right into it! Said  “fireball” is actually a satellite ( as it’s referred to throughout the film, though it actually looks like a big white weather balloon) that has now touched down to earth. The lady can’t escape, since her car stalls. As she exits the vehicle to try to escape, we see a giant hand reaching for her! She barely escapes on foot, shouting all the while for her husband Harry.

Harry, however, is otherwise occupied- hanging out in a sleazy bar with a young floozy! The couple is deep in discussion about ways to eliminate Harry’s wife. Since she has a penchant for the bottle, the idea of getting a doctor who once got her committed to a sanitarium to do the same thing again seems like  the scheme of choice.

Meanwhile, just outside, the local cops run into the aforementioned wife Nancy- who’s in a panic, and relates to them her story of the satellite and a giant alien. The officers, though skeptical, bring Nancy out to the location where she was accosted by the alien- only to find nothing- no alien, no satellite. The police suspect the whole thing is just a delusion that came out of a booze bottle, but Nancy maintains that the alien was real, and seemed to be reaching for the massive diamond she is wearing. The cops warn her of the dangers of flashing a big rock like that around, and consider the case closed.

Nancy returns home, only to find her hubby is actually there (and not at the bar or the hotel where he has his side gal Honey stashed). Nancy’s kindly butler tries to tend to her, but Harry sternly sends him away. After some nasty bickering, tipsy Nancy finally relents because, deep down inside, she still loves Harry. Harry pretends to return her affection, and “lovingly” urges her to sleep it off.

Honey puts a full-court press on Harry to take care of the Nancy problem, since she’s tired of waiting around for him. Even without the internet, word of Nancy’s “delusion” spreads all over town- and before long, the poor woman’s doctor is called in. His examination shows that she is in very fragile condition, both physically and mentally. He provides the butler with medication and the warning to, above all, keep her away from the alcohol. He should have also told him to keep her away from Harry- because she again gets into an argument with her wayward hubby- and, after seeing an insensitive TV report making fun of her, demands that Harry bring her out in the desert- to prove she is telling the truth and to look for the alien!

Unlike her earlier search with the police, this one proves frighteningly successful- and what occurs brings about incredible changes in Nancy- as well as tying in her diamond, radiation, and the giant alien being- leading to some of the most famous scenes from the movie- with 50 foot Nancy in search of- and bellowing for- “Harry”!

The less-than-Speilberg level effects notwithstanding, this is a fun (and funny) movie- with the eye candy of not only Allison Hayes as the gorgeous giant Nancy, but also the sultry homewrecker Honey- Yvette Vickers. We’ll run down the rest of the cast as well- and- we bring back some special content, including a two-part interview with the men who voiced “Pinky and The Brain” and scores of other characters- the great Rob Paulsen and Maurice LeMarche! And- at the door near the end of the show- get another look at the visit from famed late night and SNL character, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, brought to us by Robert Smigel!

“Attack of the 50 Foot Woman” begins on MeTV tonight at 8pm eastern/pacific, 7 pm central- if you’re unsure of the time and channel in your area, please check your local listings or at www.metv.com . When I rewatch VALLEY OF THE DRAGONS, I always find it amazing that Michael Denning and Hector Servadac manage to find cavemen outfits that not only fit, but also match the outfits worn by cavemen in stock footage from ONE MILLION B.C.. That is serendipity or incredibly fortunate coincidence or maybe happenstance. It is something, I must say.

Sad news for STAR TREK fans: Robert Walker, Jr. has passed on at the age of 79. His parents were Hollywood stars Robert Walker, Sr. and Jennifer Jones. RIP, Mr. Walker.

Robert Walker, Jr., who played Charlie Evans, AKA _Charlie X_, which was written by D. C. Fontana? Wow. I wonder how Shatner, George Takei, and Michelle Nichols are doing.

He was also in ENSIGN PULVER and EASY RIDER. RIP Mr. Walker.

Back-to-back viewings of ATTACK OF THE 50-FT. WOMAN and THE INCREDIBLE SHRINKING MAN would reveal some interesting distinctions between these two films. One major difference (among many others) involves character depth. Richard Matheson's existential screenplay (based on his book) probes in-depth Scott Carey's complex reactions to his sense of diminished masculinity and identity. He, a male, is a fully delineated character. On the other hand, Nancy, a female, is merely a hopeless neurotic whose giant size gives her only temporary liberation from the patriarchal attitudes and institutions that have suppressed her independence. Further sexism can be found in the conclusions of these two films. By the end of SHRINKING MAN, Scott ultimately comes to terms with his condition. He finds solace and self-respect in the fact that he, no matter how small, still matters in the realm of the infinite. By contrast, Nancy's rebellion against the patriarchal forces that have used and suppressed her is rather quickly put down by male authority figures led by the sheriff, all of whom see her as a menace. Thus, the lasting impression is that Scott, a male, is a human being, while the newly empowered Nancy is a monster. What could be more sexist and dehumanizing?

I can’t believe I’ve never seen “Valley of the Dragons”. Looking forward to it. I wonder if it borrowed some lizard footage from the old Victor Mature movie “OneMillion BC”? Made before the laws were passed for cruelty to animals where they glued fins onto Caiman and Alligator lizards.
daleuhlmann Klaatu 60 months ago
It did, indeed, Klaatu, in abundance. Producer Irwin Allen later used the same technique, and again pitted reptiles against each other, in his 1960 remake of THE LOST WORLD. Let's hope that by 1960 better safeguards had been in place to protect the animals' safety, although I'd be doubtful.

Technical blog question: When I tap on the “Like Heart” the heart changes to “Unlike”? I want to show “Like” not “Unlike.” I can’t find anything in Settings that affects that option.

Jack, interesting that on your previous post from 3hrs ago where I tapped “Like” it still shows “Unlike” on my iPhone screen. That’s very confusing and probably a glitch that should be fixed. Why even have an “Unlike” option? To me, if I don’t like a post, I ignore it or I text an actual reply.
Carl_N_Brown Klaatu 60 months ago
[]Unlike is only used to remove a []Like you accidentally posted.
I wanna call it the Indian giver option.
PatS Carl_N_Brown 60 months ago
It also keeps one post-er from skewing the results by tapping [like] 20 times. If you prefer to show you "unlike" a post, you have the option of the Flag -- in the upper right corner. Maybe it's my screen but I can't even see it until I 'mouse' over it. Can have severe results, so Flag something only if it's egregious... Really Bad.

Concerning this week's movie, you have remember a lot of these films were made on a budget of $!.98 and were distributed to Drive in movies to show to teen audiences who were not that interested in what was going on the screen. So understand these movies made cheaply to make a lot of money for the studios the distributors and the drive ins with out a lot of production values. So enjoy it for what it's worth

_Attack of the 50-Ft. Dinosaur_? Nah, doesn't quite have the same impact.
