She's Jumping Out of Sven's 40th Anniversary Cake- "Attack of the 50 Foot Woman" Tonight!

Posted on June 15, 2019

On the anniversary eve of the date that I first appeared on TV 40 years ago as the Svengoolie character, we’re celebrating early with a film many consider a creepy camp classic -  that we’ve never shown before- featuring a troubled beauty who expands her horizons- and her size- after an alien encounter! Get back, Jack- it’s the “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman”!

This 1958 sci-fi favorite begins with a newscast report of people sighting a fireball in the sky over various locales- with its trajectory bringing it above the California desert. Above it?  A woman driving on a desert road almost runs right into the “fireball”- which is constantly referred to as a “satellite” throughout this film, while it actually looks like a big white weather balloon.   The lady’s car stalls, and as she exits the vehicle in fear, a giant hand reaches for her! She escapes on foot, shouting for her husband Harry- who just so happens to be hanging out in a sleazy bar with an even sleazier young strumpet! The couple discusses ways to get rid of Harry’s wife, who has a penchant for the bottle- like getting her doctor to commit her to a sanitarium, as he did once in the past.

Outside, the local cops run into the panicking wife Nancy- and skeptically listen to her story of  the satellite and a giant alien. The officers bring Nancy out to the location she fled from- but- no sign of anything alien, and they think it’s just a delusion that came out of a booze bottle. Nancy maintains that the alien seemed to be reaching for the massive diamond she is wearing- and the cops warn her about flashing a big rock like that around.

Nancy returns home, and amazingly her hubby is there (and not at the bar or the hotel where he has his side gal Honey stashed).  While the kindly butler tries to tend to the Mrs., Harry sends him away- and the couple bickers , with tipsy Nancy finally relenting because, deep down inside, she still loves Harry.

While Honey is putting pressure on Harry because she’s tired of waiting around for him- and word of Nancy’s “delusion” spreads all over town- the poor woman’s doctor is called in- and feels she’s in very fragile condition, providing the butler with medication and the warning to keep her away from alcohol. She again gets into it with her wayward hubby- and , after becoming upset by a TV report making fun of her, demands that Harry bring her out in the desert to look for the alien!

What they find out there- and how it brings about incredible changes in Nancy-  ties in with her diamond, radiation, and the giant alien being- leading to some of the most famous scenes from the movie- with 40 foot Nancy in search of- and bellowing for- “Harry”!

The mostly slapdash effects notwithstanding, this is a fun movie- with the eye candy of not just gargantuan gal Nancy, Allison Hayes, but also sultry vixen Yvette Vickers. It’s definitely a movie you can enjoy, and we can have fun with!

Also- there’s some special content, including a two –part interview with the men who voiced “Pinky and The Brain” and scores of other characters- the great Rob Paulsen and Maurice LeMarche! And- don’t miss seeing who’s at the door near the end of the show- a special guest with ties to SNL, Conan, and more!

“Attack of the 50 foot Woman” begins on MeTV tonight at 8pm eastern/pacific, 7 pm central- if you’re unsure of the time and channel in your area, please check  your local listings or at www.metv.com . Lots of our viewers continue to live- Tweet during the show on Twitter, using the hashtag #svengoolie  - and you’re welcome to join in the fun ! Chicago area viewers should park it in front of their sets at 11 am this morning, when “The Car” makes a victory lap on WCIU, the U!

Okay- in honor of my 40 year anniversary, we’re kicking off the celebration with a special sale in our store! You can get 15% off by using the code SVEN40 ! Check out the Sven and new Universal monster t shirts, and more! The sale will go from today through next week Sunday. Watch for the information during the show- and get a deal on some great Sven stuff to celebrate  40 years of dodging rubber chickens! And- there’s more merchandise coming in the future! AND- That STILL isn’t the big news that I’ve been promising! Just keep checking back here!

As part of our celebration- stay up late as I visit with Dave Plier on WGN radio (720 AM) early this morning- after 3 am central time- to talk about the past 40 years. They will post the interview as a podcast around 6 am Sunday  if you need to pass on the live broadcast to get your beauty sleep! WGN can be heard across most of the country, so, if you’re awake- listen in!

Tonight- join in the big celebration with a BIGGER female fright on MeTV!

CatBat sighting!

She’s about an hour west of Amarillo, TX. You’ll notice on the map she’s passed through the Byrds’ Tucumcari and is a bit north of Clovis, NM, the vicinity of the original Blackwater Draw.

Godspeed, CatBat!

Keith has informed me that when "The Beast" movie was released on June 13, 1953, his father turned 30 (his birthday)...and that Keith was 5 months away from celebrating his birth-day. Ahoooo! Anyone else a 1953s child?
Jack WILLOUGHBY 61 months ago
Gee, how old is Keith in wolf years?
WILLOUGHBY Jack 61 months ago
I guess it would be about...20,000 Fathoms.

The same year "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T" came out. I guess that year they were just into large exaggerated numbers.

Well, I'm a little bit late starting my Spring Cleaning, but at least with today being the longest day I will have more time to watch MeTV. Oops, my bad it's just the daylight hours that are the longest. Darn, Darn Darn!

Fathom? What is fathom?!

William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
from The Tempest

Ariel's Song

Come unto these yellow sands,
And then take hands:
Curtsied when you have, and kiss'd
The wild waves whist,
Foot it featly here and there;
And, sweet sprites, the burthen bear.
Hark, hark!
Bow-wow.
The watch-dogs bark.
Bow-wow.
Hark, hark! I hear
The strain of strutting chanticleer
Cry, Cock-a-diddle-dow.

Full fathom five thy father lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade,
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell:
Ding-dong.
Hark! now I hear them—Ding-dong, bell.

In Act I, Scene II of The Tempest, the "airy Spirit" Ariel is ordered by Prospero to lead the shipwrecked Ferdinand to him. She does this by invisibly singing the above song to gain his attention and guide him by the sound of her voice. The second stanza is of particular relevance to Ferdinand since his father drowned.

I feel like a dope, but did they ever give any reason in last weeks feature why the alien wanted Nancy's diamond necklace? If they ever explained anything about the alien I sure missed it.
scottieO Lucyc 61 months ago
IMO, the diamond added a lot to the story line, rather than just saying she was loaded and others were after her loot.
DrClayton Lucyc 61 months ago
They wanted it for the aliens' Pawn Stars* TV show...

[*DISCLAIMER: This shall not be construed as a recommendation for, or praise of, another show...esp. not one produced by aliens. ]
Carl_N_Brown Lucyc 61 months ago
I believe there is a scene inside the alien weather ballon, er, satellite, that shows jewels suspended inside crystal globes as power sources or something.
JohnBlair Lucyc 61 months ago
YeS... power source for the craft.
PatS Lucyc 61 months ago
Maybe he thought it was a dilithium crystal.

With all due respect to Ray Harryhausen, Ray Bradbury, and Eugene Lourie, the creative forces behind tomorrow night's movie, this was the only "Fathom" that most boys growing up in the 1960's cared about.
PatS daleuhlmann 61 months ago
That's three SCREEEEEAMMs in the trailer alone. You guys can have it. Seems like a mixed-up view of women -- slinky, scared or smart -- or in this case, scrambled. With plenty of ham on the side.
daleuhlmann PatS 61 months ago
Granted, although, in the movie, Fathom does prove herself to be a resourceful heroine in what is otherwise a typical '6O's spy satire. Playing the villain is Clive Revill, who was later in an excellent ghost film, THE LEGEND OF HELL HOUSE, also starring Roddy McDowall. COLUMBO fans will also remember him as one of the long lines of crooks who made the mistake of underestimating the raincoat-clad detective.
daleuhlmann 61 months ago
There's been much talk on the blog lately about FATHOMS, but what about leagues, as in 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA and THE PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES? What's the difference between fathoms and leagues?

PatS Lucyc 61 months ago
As I understand it, a "fathom" was originally a measure of rope ('line' for you sailors). It was six feet because you gathered it in hand over hand, so a grab with the right and a grab with the left, by a well-proportioned sailor, would be six feet. (Just as a yard of fabric was often measured from the clerk's hand to the clerk's nose.)
scottieO daleuhlmann 61 months ago
Bakersfield, location of Buck Owens Crystal Palace AKA the new home of Nancy's Star of India. Catbat should stop in and see if someone would sing a little bit of RAWHIDE. (I have been there once)

(For some reason my post ain't there right now, so reposting:)

If I may believe GoogleMaps, it's about 2500 miles from Denair CA to Massillon OH. That would be 833 leagues (as defined above, 3 miles to a league) -- or 119 hops in 7-league boots.

Happy Summer Solstice, everyone!

A late Good Morning to you all!
Happy Friday!
Dale, your leagues and phantoms post is in the other blog.
It is officially summer but, you would not know it here in Wisconsin.
We finally hit 80 degrees yesterday (high temp of exactly 80) the latest first 80 degree day on record. So far for 2019 the average daily temp is 13 degrees below normal. Add in some record rainfall and the farmland is in a state of disaster (under water & not much planted) We will pay for this weather at the grocery store!
Have a Great Day & Take Care!
