Thanks to A Misshapen Murderer- an Art Studio Becomes the "House of Horrors"- Tonight!

Posted on August 21, 2021

Tonight on MeTV- after surviving the “House on Haunted Hill” last week, we move on to another house- one containing an art studio, an under-appreciated artist- and a bizarre murderer! The artist is driven to desperate acts in hopes of achieving artistic acclaim by using that frightening and powerful figure as his pawn to take revenge! Learn the actual story of the actor who became known as the "Monster Without Make-Up"-in his most famous role as the terrifying “Creeper”- when we enter the "House of Horrors"!

The story opens when a nearly destitute artist sees his luck taking a turn for the better, when he finally has a customer ready to buy one of his latest – shall we say “unusual”-works of art! Unfortunately, his would-be patron brings along an acerbic art critic, whose disparaging remarks about the artist’s “masterpiece” changes the prospective buyer's mind – and he cancels his purchase right on the spot! The dejected artist,Marcel, then wanders the streets and contemplates doing himself in at the river- only to spot a half-drowned stranger in the waters! Still having a sense of decency in spite of his depression, he takes this odd individual back to his home to recover. This misshapen man with unusual frightening looks  feels gratitude towards the artist, who is inspired, thinking this man with the bizarre features could be the subject of a new and amazing artistic creation! As things go along, Marcel discovers that his new "friend" has a questionable past- he just happens to be the sadistic serial killer known as “The Creeper”! However, knowing that the hulking brute feels he owes Marcel, the artist has no sense of fear, and conjures up a plan to use his new-found model as an instrument of revenge- setting him on the trail of those who he feels have made it their mission to stifle his career and made the artist’s life miserable!

Marcel works on a huge realistic depiction of his grateful model, and keeps him a secret from the world. One day, he is visited by a pretty newspaper reporter, who happens to have an artist boyfriend who shares his distaste for the nasty critic who cost Marcel his sale and has printed derisive comments about him as well. There are worse things than the sting of bad reviews in store for the critic –and soon, one by one, art critics start turning up dead. The reporter's boyfriend suddenly heads the list of possible suspects. Even more bad luck-when the reporter finally sees what Marcel's latest project is- and starts doing her homework like any good reporter would- what she finds leads to HER heading to the top of a different list- Marcel’s hit list! Will the massive murdering model remove any threat of exposure by eliminating one more victim?

This 1946 film was actually the return of the "Creeper" character that Rondo first portrayed in the Sherlock Holmes film “Pearl of Death”. Universal had high hopes for the character, and planned to have him the star in a series of films, but Rondo passed away before that could happen. We’ll give you an in-depth look at Rondo's real life story, thanks to research done by film-maker Fred Olen Ray- we’ll introduce you to familiar faces in the cast- including one you've seen in the company of a certain caped crusader. There's a lot of Sven segment fun, including an early version of our drawing game, and speaking of works of art- we repeat the special feature showing how our striking Sven dungeon set was created and constructed by our own artistic genius friends from the Acme Design Inc. company of Elgin, Il.

Also, after we originally recorded the biographical info about Rondo, we learned I was mispronouncing the disease that caused his disfigurement- acromegaly. Constraints on our production prevented us from correcting that mistake- my apologies. And, yes, Rondo is the namesake of the national horror genre awards, in his image- of which I’ve been the proud recipient of several, thanks to the votes of our kind fans.

Enter the “House of Horrors” on METV tonight at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central, or check for time and channel in your local listings- or at www.metv.com. As always, MeTV hopes you’ll join the scores of Sven fans who will be live-Tweeting during the show on Twitter- using the hashtag #svengoolie. Our Chicago area viewers get to visit that other house we mentioned one more time- the “House on Haunted Hill ”- on CW26 at 11 am.

Tonight- join our art appreciation group –where anyone who DOESN’T appreciate the artist might find their quality of life depreciated!

Looking at the cast members for “Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (1953), I spotted a face that looked somewhat familiar but the name John Dierkes, who plays a character named Batley, did not ring a bell. As I was to discover, this actor made numerous appearances that would be of interest to Svengoolians and fans of MeTV.

Dierkes was born on February 10, 1905 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended Brown University and subsequently went to work as an economist for the U.S. Dept of State. In 1941 he joined the Red Cross and served in Britain during WW2. There he met director John Huston who recommended that he try Hollywood after the war. Instead, Dierkes went to work for the U.S. Treasury Dept which coincidentally sent him to Hollywood to function as technical advisor for the film “To the Ends of the Earth” (1948). Two years later, Huston called on him to play The Tall Soldier in “The Red Badge of Courage” (1951). From that point on, he was an actor until his death in 1975.

John had a gaunt appearance and was very tall (6’ 6”). His quiet dignity and distinctive appearance led him to a long career as a character actor, often portraying either villains or soldiers. Dierkes played a soldier next to Audie Murphy in the classic film “Red Badge of Courage” (1951). In “Shane” (1953), he portrays the callous Morgan Ryker. Alongside his 'brother' Rufus (Emile Meyer) and Jack Wilson (Jack Palance) he makes up a trio of villainous characters who are dispatched by the title character, Shane, in the final bar room shootout. One of his more memorable scenes is in “The Alamo”(1960). Dierkes portrays a Tennessean named Jocko, who is torn between leaving before the attack to care for his blind wife, or staying to support the Texans' cause. Other movies include: “The Naked Jungle” (1954), “The Raid” (1954), “Jubal (1956)”, “Blood Arrow” (1958), “The Left Handed Gun” (1958), “The Buccaneer” (1958), “The Hanging Tree” (1959), “The Oregon Trail” (1959), “One-Eyed Jacks” (1961), “The Premature Burial” (1962), and “Rage” (1972).

John Dierkes credits also include horror/sci-fi entries: “The Daughter of Dr. Jekyll” (1957) as Jacob, “X: The Man with the X-ray Eyes” (1963) as a Preacher (uncredited), “The Haunted Palace” (1963) as Benjamin West / Jacob West, and “The Omega Man” (1971) as Family Member #2. He also appeared in 4 episodes of the TV series “Gunsmoke” (1956, 1957, 1971, 1973).

John Dierkes' face was familiar to me because of one noteworthy performance; he was cast as the compassionate and caring scientist Dr. Chapman(uncredited) in “The Thing from Another World” (1951) which remains a mainstay science fiction classic of the 1950s. His performance provided sanity and calm amid the tension and chills of the action thriller. Although playing against type, his low tone and measured monotone dialogue was a good counter to the rapid and chaotic overlapping dialogue throughout the movie, giving brief pauses between each actor's lines as the tension in each scene increased.

If last week was about repetition of the familiar in terms of the film score, then get ready to be all over the musical map tomorrow night. As for tonight…
I must be thinking fall, baking chocolate chip pumpkin spice cookies (yeah, real ginger and a nice infusion of chipotle). Still have to infuse the “beast that must die in the smoker” with garlic for it’s delicious demise tomorrow. Happy Eve of Sventurday, and good luck to all at the stroke of midnight!
Katink Thereman 37 months ago
Interesting, Thereman! Never thought of chipotle as a part of the pumpkin spice family!

Mmm looks and sounds delicous

Like always, it doesn’t take much chipotle- unless you want Scovilles registering in scientific notation!

This James Blish short story was the source material for _The Beast Must Die_. It was first published in _Thrilling Wonder Stories_, April 1950, which also contained “Carnival of Madness” by Ray Bradbury, part of _The Martian Chronicles_.“There Shall Be No Darkness” later appeared in _Zacherley's Vulture Stew_ (1960, Ballantine)
Thereman Jack 37 months ago
Has to be good when it’s a THRILLING publication!

I bought Zacherley's "Vulture Stew" and "Midnight Snacks" anthologies back when I was going the theaters late fifties, early sixties watching a lot of the movies Sven shows.

They were thin Ballantine paperbacks but the stories about a dozen each were well selected.

Another network is showing a series called "The Beast Must Die" - a modern murder mystery.

Do not be fooled by substitutes. Only Svengoolie's Saturday night movie THE BEAST MUST DIE is the real deal with an authentic Werewolf Break.

Hi all! Was driving through Kansas today, and realized that I truly was in the cornfield! Saw none of the usual suspects with me though lol!

I'll be missing tomorrow's film, but having just seen it on April I don't mind so much. Besides, I already know it was Colonel Mustard in the library with the candlestick (oops! Spoilers!).

Carl_N_Brown Mikeyyy 37 months ago
Hal Smith, the actor who played Otis, is not Hal Smith, the screenwriter who coauthored IT CAME FROM BENEATH THE SEA with screenwriter George Worthing Yates who was not the character John Beresford Tipton the check writer on "The Millionaire" but they both had totally awesome names compared to Hal Smith.
