The Gill Man Trilogy Kicks Off Tonight with “Creature from the Black Lagoon”!

Posted on July 12, 2014

It's been a couple years since we've shown this  favorite film- and, of course, the first step in our "Gill Man Trilogy" presentation- for what I believe is the first time on this show that we've aired this series of movies, all in a row and in order- we begin with the 1950s most memorable Universal monster- "The Creature from the Black Lagoon"!

A geological expedition in the Amazon uncovers an amazing fossil- a strange webbed claw unlike anything  ever seen! An ichthyologist is called in to help identify it- and  a second expedition is planned to search for more of this unusual find. Dr. Reed, the ichthyologist, is a little concerned about his boss approving the excursion, since he seems more interested in the  financial possibilities of making this rare find.  The big boss, along with Reed's beautiful girlfriend and colleague Kay, join Reed and his mentor, Dr. Maia, aboard a ramshackle old steamer, under the command of the eccentric Captain Lucas. They head to Maia's camp- only to find his men dead, and the camp torn apart!

The expedition continues- and, when no further fossil remains are located in the area- it is suggested that they move downriver, where more remains may have been washed. The tributaries  flow into an area known as the "Black Lagoon"- where , it is rumored, anyone who ventures there has never returned!

It's in the Black Lagoon area that the group realizes that a living version of the fossilized creature still exists- and , this same amphibian monster that destroyed the earlier camp  is now stalking them, especially the lovely female that he seems to  be obsessed with!

I've always loved this 1954 film, and the Creature is a great addition to the Universal slate of  top monsters! Of course , we'll introduce you to the cast, give you some Gill Man lore, and more- and, give you a special look at some of the fun events from the yearly Flashback Weekend convention from last year's visit. (The 2014 edition is coming up soon, and we'll be there- not only signing and doing the costume contest, but- doing a live on stage talk show with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger- but, more about that soon...)

We're so happy to be able to bring you the entire series as the major part of our theme for this month "A Gal and A Gill Man" (you'll notice, in each "Creature" film, there is always one special female that the Gill Man concentrates on!) You can catch part one- "Creature from the Black Lagoon"- on Me-TV tonight at 10 pm eastern/pacific, 9 pm central, or, check the listings where you live!

In Chicago, viewers of WCIU get another look (is that possible?) at the "Invisible Woman" at 11 am on our beloved sister station the U !

Remember- only two weeks until we hit the Taphouse Grill in Des Plaines, IL- check under the"appearances" tab for further details!

Follow the history of the Gill Man starting tonight on Svengoolie- and through the rest of the month!
