The Hideous Tooth Will Out- William Castle Presents "Mr. Sardonicus" Tonight!

Posted on July 6, 2019

Tonight, we augment your 4th of July extended weekend with a chorus of “hooray for the dead, fright and boo!” as we bring back a creepy tale from the resume of movie gimmick-master  William Castle! It’s a film that gave many a movie-goer nightmares, most of them provoked by the countenance of the title baron - the mysterious and shocking “Mr. Sardonicus”!

This 1961 horror story begins with the introduction of the noble  Dr. Robert Cargrave, a medical practitioner  using unique breakthrough treatments for paralysis in 1800s London, After receiving a troubling letter from his long lost love, the now Baroness Sardonicus- asking him to come immediately to her husband’s home in order to insure her well- being, the doctor, concerned  by her sense of urgency, heads to Gorslava, a central European country, to see what is plaguing his former beloved Maude. Arriving at the Sardonicus castle- he is shocked to find a scarred man-servant torturing one of the maids as part of a “therapeutic experiment” prescribed by the mysterious Baron. He puts a stop to the so-called therapy , and is finally reunited with Maude, a fragile beauty who is in full fright mode, begging him to follow through on whatever Sardonicus might ask him to do- for the good of both of them

Finally, the baron himself appears- wearing a full face mask, his actual visage hidden from sight. As dinner is served, he joins his wife and their visitor, but does not partake of the meal, stating that he has already eaten. Later, Sardonicus deems to explain the mask to the doctor, and recounts his life story – with his beginnings as a poor farmer, living with his pretty wife and his father. Sadly, his father passes away- but one of the locals reveals the fact that the old man had won a rich lottery prize. It dawns on his son and daughter-in-law that the winning ticket was buried with the old man!  The beautiful but demanding wife goads the poor fellow into committing an unspeakable act- digging up his father’s grave to retrieve the ticket, and make them wealthy.  He heads out to the graveyard to carry out the awful deed- but, while succeeding makes him a rich man, it also make him pay a hideous  price!

Sardonicus reveals to the doctor the results of his vile act-including the reason he must cover his true face. It is the reason that Cargrave was summoned- to use his expertise and experimental treatments to restore the baron’s face to its normal form. Should he fail, the Baron threatens to bring unspeakable horrors to both Maude and her former lover- awful enough to rival what has happened to the heartless Sardonicus!

Besides some truly shocking scenes- this film features Castle’s gimmick of the  “Punishment Poll” by which the audience would supposedly determine the film’s outcome. We’ll tell you all  about that, as well as providing facts about Castle and our cast. We’ll serenade you with a song a little later than usual in the program, and bring you a new lottery with its basic face value . As always, since we always have some viewers who have not experienced the film, we ask that our blog commenters please refrain from posting pictures from the film, or information that would include spoilers until the show concludes – in all time zones, please. Your extra information that we didn’t cover is always welcome- but only AFTER the show has aired everywhere. Don’t risk being banned!                                                                                                                                         “Mr. Sardonicus” brings his grim visage to MeTV tonight at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central, or, if you’re not sure of the time and channel in your area, go to your local listings or  www.metv.com MeTV invites our viewers to live- Tweet during the show on Twitter, using the hashtag #svengoolie  - and join the many fans who keep us trending among the most-talked about Twitter  topics nationally each week! Chicago area viewers can do a double-take at Hammer Studios’ “Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll”   at 11 am on WCIU, the U.

We hope you’ve taken advantage of the limited anniversary edition of the beloved “It Came from Berwyn” Sven t shirt that went on sale on July1st- there are still some left, though  not all sizes are still available. More anniversary shirts will be coming up in the next few months- with other special anniversary items to come- so keep checking back in our store.

Next week Friday evening, July 12th, I’ll be at the Schererville Indiana “Hocus Pocus Party in the Park”! I’ll sign autographs and introduce a showing of the bewitching film “Hocus Pocus”. You’ll find information under the “appearances” tab here on our site.

Take a break from your holiday grilling for a grill that is thrilling-tonight on MeTV !

Any chance of airing “The Crawling Eye”? Now THAT would be good for a few silly comments!🤪
Islander Klaatu 65 months ago
Love the crawling eye. Sven showed it one time. Dale can probably tell us when. I've been hoping it would come around again but it must be a one and done..
I'm ready for The Mole People also.

Sven getting movies depends a lot on who is holding the release rights. Svengoolie featured THE CRAWLING EYE on 10 Jul 2004. Maybe an encore is overdue.
I saw it as a kid when it first came out and was impressed.
It built up suspense, and the clairvoyant chick was a spooky angle. When the monster appeared, most of the matinee audience were so keyed up they over-looked the clumsiness of the monster itself.

Carl, you sure about that ? I'm pretty sure I saw The Crawling Eye on Sven and I only started watching svengoolie around 2008.

Islander, I’m a newbie. I only discovered Svengoolie a few months ago, so I’m out of touch with what movies Sven has aired. I’m just happy to watch any movie he airs as they are all new to me (well, new in the Sven sense).

Guy Rolfe was also in Hammer's exotic historical melodrama THE STRANGLERS OF BOMBAY, whose content I would still consider borderline horror because of some genuinely gruesome scenes. The film was in color, but I've only been able to find black and white trailers online.

Had a strange experience last night when I got off work. As I was walking to my truck, I noticed something on the edge of my hood, along the grill. As I got closer, it looked like a leaf. Then it looked like a couple of leaves with something else attached.

Got to my truck, and started pulling on one of the “leaves”. That’s when I realize the “leaf” was a wing. It was a bat. And he was dead. Apparently, I had hit him in flight.

That kind of hood ornament would scare me, but I can't see anyone accusing you of assault and battery on a bat.
TheKodakKid WILLOUGHBY 65 months ago
Well, it didn’t bite me, so no danger of me turning into a bat on the next full moon.

Good Svengoolie Saturday Eve, group! Tomorrow, Sven will once again lay the Hammer down! Even though neither Peter Cushing nor Christopher Lee is in this film, there's no gauze to worry: It's a good one. However, parents, beware: some scenes include a lot of heavy breathing (you'll see what I mean), so viewer discretion is advised (LOL).

I have to admit that this one of Forest J. Ackerman's puns from FAMOUS MONSTERS OF FILMLAND. Others were "Horrorwood, Karloffornia," "Fred Ascare," "Blacky Lagoon" (his name for the Gill-Man"), "On the other claw," and "Hey, mouse, are you ratty for this?"

Good Morning & Happy Friday!
Another new movie for Sven and for me. I have not seen this one.
Say, it`s not the story of Billy Mummy`s life is it?
I think I will make some Tana leaf tea for breakfast. See you later.

Fish heads. Why did it hafta be fish heads.
The horror. The horror The year before 1st grade Mom and Dad took me to the Smoky Mountains. At the diner I ordered trout. It was served with the head attached. Its eye stared up at me accusingly. The old horror .... Still haunting me ...

Speaking of mummies: I always loved the Jonny Quest episode "Curse of Anubis". The beginning is so cool - after Anubis is stolen the mummy comes to life: the coffin lid pops open, its arms drop down to the side and the somnambulistic walk in pursuit of the relic.

That brings back some memories.

Good Svengoolie Saturday Eve Morning All! Are you ready to get all wrapped up in a new to Sven movie?
Islander Catbat 65 months ago

Definitely, especially since we haven't seen a mummy movie in a long time. The fact that it's a new one makes it an extra- special present that Sven has wrapped for us (see what I did there?).

Something I’ve wondered about, that I don’t remember seeing discussed here, is why he kept his father’s body in the locked room?

Did the Baron turn his castle into Gorslavia's Playboy Mansion?
TheKodakKid Carl_N_Brown 65 months ago
You’d think he would have had held more ill will and feeling of blame towards the first wife. She was definitely a “B” before she became a Baroness. She is the one who made him dig up dear old Dad so that she could have the lifestyle she wanted.

As cold and materialistic as she came across, I wonder why she married someone as poor and simple-living as Sardonicus was at that time?

Good question, Kodak.

Grant Williams, The incredible Shrinking Man himself, is on tonight's PERRY MASON, along with another genre favorite, Les Tremayne (his co-star in THE MONOLITH MONSTERS). Another familiar face in that same epidode is former Warner Brothers tough guy Barton MacLaine, who was in two Sven favorites, THE MUMMY'S GHOST and CRY OF THE WEREWOLF, as well as the 1948 Cinecolor prehistoric monster saga, UNKNOWN ISLAND.
