The Perfect Pre-Halloween Howl: “Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein” Tonight!

Posted on October 25, 2014

It's the perfect time of year for the one movie  we get requests for all year round- one of the best "scare comedies" ever made, and the only one to feature the BIG 3 of Universal Horror, played by some of the  original stars- it's "Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein"!

Baggage handlers Chick and Wilbur get a strange call at their office, warning them about impending danger- but- when the call suddenly becomes a series of growls,  they dismiss it. They have an important shipment to make -some large boxes to a "house of horrors" exhibit, which supposedly contain the remains of the Frankenstein Monster and Count Dracula! Little do they realize, as they deliver the boxes- that it's the REAL Drac and Monster- who sneak off- leaving Chick and Wilbur at risk for the missing"exhibits"!

A beautiful woman who has been pretending to be attracted to Wilbur turns out to be a surgeon who has studied the work of Dr. Frankenstein- and welcomes the Count to her island  laboratory, where the intention is to give the Monster a new brain- that of someone easily manipulated- and Wilbur is the perfect donor!

Soon, the man who made that original warning phone call, Larry Talbot, arrives in town- he knows what the Count's plan is, and he wants to make sure it doesn't happen. Unfortunately, his progress is marred by  a curse he inherited- he turns into the Wolf Man! Add into the mix a lovely insurance investigator who hopes to find out what the boys did with the "exhibits"-  and a battle ensues over Wilbur's brain- and between the three legendary monsters!

This 1948 film was considered the "last hurrah" for the original monsters- and helped revive the careers of Abbott and Costello. We'll fill you in with some insight and lots of background on the film, along with the usual  Sven  schtick and a song!

"Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" arrives on MeTV  at 10 pm eastern/pacific, 9 pm central, or check for the correct time in your area in local listings. Chicago viewers get another look at the origin picture of one of tonight's star monsters, "The Wolf Man", at 11 am on our sister station, WCIU, the U!

A quick reminder that I'll be at the "Nightmare on Chicago Street"  in the zombie- free "safe zone" in Elgin, IL tonight. It'd always a huge party, and , with the weather  seeming to be perfect, this event will no doubt be better than ever! You'll find more info under our "appearances" tab on this site.

This Friday will indeed be the official "Svengoolie/ Rich Koz Day" in Chicago and the State of Illinois- and, as a Halloween treat, yours truly will be popping up all day long on MeTV, bringing you special Halloween-flavored episodes of your favorite shows! I'll also be posting  on MeTV's Facebook page- and on the MeTV website- www.metvnetwork.com !

Right now, among my Halloween appearances, will be a visit to "You and Me This Morning" (wait until you see Jeanne and Melissa's costumes!) on WCIU- and a visit with my friends Bill and Wendy on WGN radio (720AM) - at 5:05 pm central - no doubt, in the Michigan Ave. "Showcase Studio" so you can stop by and watch the broadcast! Please check our "appearances" tab for any additional stops added in as the  big day approaches!

And then- as our Halloween weekend continues-on November 1st- we head to Valparaiso, Indiana, to visit the Chicago Street Theatre for a special event built around their production of a stage adaptation of "Frankenstein"! More about that soon...

Please enjoy Bud and Lou, Dracula  and Wolf Man, and the big lug himself, the Monster tonight- and watch for me on MeTV on Halloween!
