The REAL License to Kill- a Driver’s License for “The Car”- Tonight!

Posted on April 30, 2016

It's terror by transmission- getting bumped off by bumpers- and defending against fenders- when citizens of a small desert town are plagued by the deadly and devilish driverless destruction of- "The Car"!

In this 1977  example of "roadkill" movies like "Christine" and "Maximum Overdrive" (which opens with a quote from the late leader of "the Church of Satan"!? ) some mysterious events in a quiet Utah town seem connected- the victims were done in by a large black car with no license plate - and an unseen driver. When yet another killing hits close to home for the local police force, Deputy Wade becomes concerned about cancelling any public events- including his girlfriend, school teacher Lauren, holding outdoor practices with the school marching band. A compromise is reached- there will be rehearsal, but with  a police guard!

During rehearsal, an eerie wind blows up- and the mysterious car attacks! The students and faculty still can't see the driver (keep in mind- an earlier witness to one of the deadly events says there WAS no driver!) and, as the car speeds away into the desert, the police give chase- with more tragic results. Wade has his own run-in with the "angry auto"- and it seems that even bullets have no effect on it!

With the car still on the loose,Wade is worried about protecting not just the citizens, but also Lauren - and his two daughters! More lives are lost- and the Satanic automobile seems to be choosing its victims- leading to a dangerous plan to stop the motorized menace that appears to be driven by  supernatural powers ! (Plus- power steering, power brakes...)

Though some take issue with the acting in this film, it is definitely, over-all, a nail-biter- James Brolin does his best as the deputy out to stop the car, and we'll run down (oops- poor choice of words) the rest of the cast, including alumni of "The Godfather" and "Beverly Hills Cop" -and some future  "Real Housewives"-plus , the car itself, created by the late George Barris! Of course , we gear up for some Sven fun- and, appropriately, take another look at one of our favorite places- the Volo Auto Museum!

"The Car" roars into view on MeTV tonight at 10 pm eastern/pacific, 9 central, or -check local listings or at www.metv.com for time and channel in your area. Those in the area of Chicago get a second look at 'Murders in the Zoo" (yes, with the"Boa- Brace" commercial- and- the ENTIRE song with Doug and I! ) at 11 am on WCIU, the U!

Be here next week for another "Inner Sanctum" mystery- and a special comedy guest! Before that,though-  fasten your seat belts for  a scary ride with "the Car" tonight!
