There Are No Small Parts- Only Small Actors- and a BIG Menace in "Dr. Cyclops"- Tonight!

Posted on September 19, 2020

Tonight on MeTV- it’s a Technicolor favorite with ground-breaking special effects -as we witness members of a scientific expedition honored to be summoned to assist a legendary scientist- only to become victims of a process he has invented that makes them shrink- leaving them at the mercy of the near-sighted nastiness of the enemy they call "Dr. Cyclops"!

A selection of experts in their related scientific fields travel to the Peruvian jungle at the request of reclusive scientific genius, Dr. Thorkel ,who needs assistance with a hush-hush project. The group includes biologist Mary, stuffy Dr. Bullfinch, and mineralogist Bill Stockton - a last minute replacement for someone who bowed out of the assignment,. Their destination is the remote jungle compound of Thorkel, far from civilization. The last leg of the journey requires renting mules from a suspicious fellow named Baker- who’s worried his animals may not be treated well by these city-folk , and demands to come along with them. This proves to be a mistake!

Thorkel's servant Pedro detects their approach, and he scrambles to alert the extremely near-sighted scientist that his requested visitors are arriving. The brilliant fellow, wearing what we jokingly refer to as "Coke bottle glasses" due to his deteriorating vision, cannot even see what’s magnified in his microscope, which is why he has invited the visitors. He needs their help to identify a certain microscopic structure for him. They do- and, no sooner do they reveal what they see to him than he brusquely thanks them and demands that they leave -immediately!

Bullfinch and the group are outraged to be so rudely dismissed after coming so far. They demand to remain, curious about what Thorkel’s mysterious project, which he refuses to divulge, might be. By accident, they discover a clue- some radioactive material, which prompts the group to sneak into Thorkel’s private laboratory for further investigation. The bald bespectacled genius catches them in the act and flies into a rage! He seems to calm down after his initial fury,  appears willing to explain the reason for his secrecy-and proceeds to show them a unique piece of equipment he has invented. Catching the party unaware, he traps them in a chamber with this device, which transforms them-along with his own assistant- to incredibly small size!

The tiny folk must find a way to escape- and must battle not only the fiendish Thorkel- but also the dangers of the normal-sized world that now tower over them. Things that pose no threat to a typical full sized human now become deadly menaces! Can they avoid the heartless Thorkel's clutches- and a way back to normal size?

This 1940 film, shot in the early version of Technicolor, and directed by “King Kong”s  Ernest Schoedstack, presents some novel effects depicting the world the tiny humans now face. Though, by now, we've seen the same type of over-sized props many times, this film included some groundbreaking firsts for that type of thing. We'll introduce you to the cast, and bring you some Sven shtick, along with a flashback to when we could still do conventions with interviews of guests  including the lovely Felissa Rose of “Sleepaway Camp” fame, and one of the originators of the original “Night of the Living Dead”!

"Dr. Cyclops" airs on MeTV at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central time- and , if you're not sure when it airs or on what channel where you are, please check your local listings , or at www.metv.com . MeTV encourages you to join in with the fans live-Tweeting using the hashtag #svengoolie during the show. Our show continues to appear in the top trending topics on Twitter nationally! In the Chicago area, viewers should be aware that our encore showing of “Night of the Lepus” will be back at our original Chicago home, now known as the CW 26 at 11 am.

I want to mention an important event’s anniversary- this week marks 50 years since the debut of Chicago’s “Screaming Yellow Theatre” on WFLD- in which the staff announcer was Jerry G. Bishop- who parlayed his weekly announcing gig into the creation of the legendary horror host –the original Svengoolie! That lead to me to becoming his protégé , co-worker, and friend- and was the true beginning of me being put on the road to becoming his hand-picked successor. Jerry was a talented and generous man, as I’ve told you all before- and I hope that I honor him by what I do.

Please join us tonight for little people experiencing big terror!

Looking forward to a new(to me)feature tomorrow night. I cheated and bought a bag of "pre-popped" popcorn for the show tomorrow.
A few thoughts about the "real" Dracula as opposed to the fictitious one. There is a debate about how much Bram Stoker really knew about the "real" Dracula. I would argue that he knew enough to not only name his character Dracula, but what background he gives for his Count is, IMO, a pretty good thumbnail sketch of the real guy.
Interestingly, nowadays the real Dracula is often referred to as Vlad Tepes-Vlad the Impaler-the man himself never used that term(and I guess it's a good question as to how widespread the use of that term was, at the time.) He did refer to himself as Vlad Dracul. Dracul was actually a title to be proud of, as it's connotation was as a recognized "protector of the realm," so to speak, and many reports about this Vlad state he was certainly proud of the title.
Another thing about the famed Vlad is that, despite his notoriety, he actually only managed to be the ruler of Wallachia for about seven years-and they weren't consecutive years.
Speaking of Dracula's offspring, he actually had three sons, but only one lived to be an adult. His son, Mihnea, was also the ruling Prince of Wallachia. However, unlike his dad, when he was deposed, he decided his survival was more important than some transitory title, so he moved away and was able to live out his life. His line officially died out completely in the 1600's, so there are no direct descendants of the famed "real" Dracula, though there are still distant relatives.
Though he didn't do as many horrible things as he gets accused of, he still did do some horrible things. His vampirism is pretty much the invention of Mr. Stoker's imagination, and not based on local superstition about him. However, from a folklore perspective, a person who did the horrendous things that Vlad Dracul did was certainly considered to be a good candidate to become a vampire after his or her demise.

Vlad II Dracul, was a member of the Order of the Dragon, and was known under the sobriquet “lea Dracul” after the dragon-shaped medal he proudly wore. His son, Vlad Țepeș (Vlad III) was also called Dracula, “little dragon,” after his father.

Nothing wrong with pre-popped.
You don't want to miss any Sven segments.
We keep the tv in the back family/kitchen on Svengoolie so we won't miss any segments while popping or blending.....if you catch my mudslide.

Just got in from the salt mine. Waiting for me in my mail was the new Archie McPhee catalog. Yes, he offers much more than the rubber chickens thrown at Sven.

A new item that caught my eye (and I’m glad it did. Be hard to find with only one to use to look for its mate). They now have a Monster Ornament Set. It’s three hand blown glass ornaments that are the heads of Frankenstein’s monster, a werewolf, and a vampire. Order them now to complete your Halloween decorations. Then transfer them over to your Christmas tree.
Klaatu TheKodakKid 49 months ago
Sounds like good stuff! Speaking of Christmas ornaments (are we still allowed to say Christmas?🤔), when I worked at 20th Century Fox they had a Studio Store from where I bought 3 strings of Star Wars Christmas tree lights. Yoda and the Millennium Falcon we’re the hanging lights.
Jack Klaatu 49 months ago
Of course you can say Christmas! How else would Oliver Reed become a werewolf?!

Its Friday! Svengoolie eve ! Uoy knaht.

Hey, group, I just watched SLEEPAWAY CAMP. While it is an entertaining if somewhat predictable slasher flick (derivative of Alfred Hitchcock's PSYCHO and William Castle's HOMICIDAL) its unexpected ending definitely sets it apart from other 1980s' films of that genre.
daleuhlmann 49 months ago
Charles Halton, who played Dr. Bullfinch in DR. CYCLOPS, was also in one of the greatest satirical comedy masterpieces of all time, director Ernest Lubitsch's 1942 Jack Benny, Carole Lombard classic TO BE OR NOT TO BE. Also in the cast were Robert Stack and, in a rare comedic role, Lionel Atwill.

Has Sven ever shown “Indestructible Man” starring Lon Chaney Jr? Made in 1956 it’s B movie fare but I got a kick out of it. Maybe a content problem with younger viewers?

Overview
Death row inmate Charles `The Butcher' Benton seeks revenge on his crooked lawyer who double-crossed him. After his execution, a bizarre experiment brings him back to life to find the man who had him condemned.
daleuhlmann Aceman2 49 months ago
That movie is a very entertaining Allied Artists sci-fi that is somewhat similar to Lon's earlier MAN MADE MONSTER. The one debit is its very sexist ending.

He earlier hinted that a much requested movie was coming in the Fall. And as I've mentioned once or twice (ha ha) I certainly love THEM new movies.
