Tonight on MeTV- Sven Broadcasts from Home- and Karloff is the "Man with Nine Lives"!

Posted on June 20, 2020

Tonight on MeTV, we have something new for you- on a couple fronts! First, it has finally been arranged that I will be broadcasting the show from my home base- and second- we have a program premiere of a rarely-seen film starring the great Boris Karloff in a chilling- and you can take that literally- tale of an unprecedented medical miracle and the treachery of the scientist who wants to prove his theories at whatever cost necessary- when his procedure turns he himself into the “Man with Nine Lives”!

In this 1940 film, Dr. Tim Mason and his nurse Judith amaze the medical community by demonstrating  “frozen therapy”- that literally involves dropping the patient’s temperature! Despite its promising results, the head of Mason’s hospital is not happy with the publicity and its suggestion of a cure that isn’t quite definite- and takes Mason off the therapy research. Mason is upset- but doesn’t want to give up- so he uses his  imposed “vacation” to travel with Judith to the island where the scientist whose work inspired his theories, the long- missing Dr. Kravaal, originally experimented.

Renting a boat to get to the island, they are warned by the cantankerous old boat keeper to keep clear of the deserted house – and he tells of the other men who disappeared along with Kravaal ten years ago! Regardless, Mason and Judith make their way to the old compound- only to find some proof that Kravaal was indeed on the right track, find what happened to the missing men- and find Kravaal himself!

Kravaal reveals, via a flashback, exactly what has brought him to this point- and begins a concentrated effort to find the missing factor to explain what made his frozen therapy succeed- putting the young couple and others in grave danger!

I’ve minimized the story information here to protect you from spoilers- and ask our blog commenters to do the same. Karloff performs a similar character to some of his mad scientist roles, like the one in “The Invisible Ray”- with an aim of helping humanity, but not caring how his narrow vision might cost human lives! In this unusual broadcast, we’ll do some of the usual- present a joke that is so obviously suggested by the movie title, run down the cast list, bring you one of our vintage Karloff bits, and show you some interview segments with our friend Jeff Daniel Phillips ( one of the Geico Cavemen, a star of some Rob Zombie flicks and the Fox Marvel series “The Gifted”) along with another actor with horror credits, Richard Brake- from the last convention before the pandemic, C2E2 !
