Tonight on MeTV- Sven Broadcasts from Home- and Karloff is the "Man with Nine Lives"!

Posted on June 20, 2020

Tonight on MeTV, we have something new for you- on a couple fronts! First, it has finally been arranged that I will be broadcasting the show from my home base- and second- we have a program premiere of a rarely-seen film starring the great Boris Karloff in a chilling- and you can take that literally- tale of an unprecedented medical miracle and the treachery of the scientist who wants to prove his theories at whatever cost necessary- when his procedure turns he himself into the “Man with Nine Lives”!

In this 1940 film, Dr. Tim Mason and his nurse Judith amaze the medical community by demonstrating  “frozen therapy”- that literally involves dropping the patient’s temperature! Despite its promising results, the head of Mason’s hospital is not happy with the publicity and its suggestion of a cure that isn’t quite definite- and takes Mason off the therapy research. Mason is upset- but doesn’t want to give up- so he uses his  imposed “vacation” to travel with Judith to the island where the scientist whose work inspired his theories, the long- missing Dr. Kravaal, originally experimented.

Renting a boat to get to the island, they are warned by the cantankerous old boat keeper to keep clear of the deserted house – and he tells of the other men who disappeared along with Kravaal ten years ago! Regardless, Mason and Judith make their way to the old compound- only to find some proof that Kravaal was indeed on the right track, find what happened to the missing men- and find Kravaal himself!

Kravaal reveals, via a flashback, exactly what has brought him to this point- and begins a concentrated effort to find the missing factor to explain what made his frozen therapy succeed- putting the young couple and others in grave danger!

I’ve minimized the story information here to protect you from spoilers- and ask our blog commenters to do the same. Karloff performs a similar character to some of his mad scientist roles, like the one in “The Invisible Ray”- with an aim of helping humanity, but not caring how his narrow vision might cost human lives! In this unusual broadcast, we’ll do some of the usual- present a joke that is so obviously suggested by the movie title, run down the cast list, bring you one of our vintage Karloff bits, and show you some interview segments with our friend Jeff Daniel Phillips ( one of the Geico Cavemen, a star of some Rob Zombie flicks and the Fox Marvel series “The Gifted”) along with another actor with horror credits, Richard Brake- from the last convention before the pandemic, C2E2 !

“Man with Nine Lives” comes to you tonight on MeTV at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central. Twitter-posting Sven fans have again had us trending high among national topics during the show by live- Tweeting and using the hashtag #svengoolie , so feel free to join in. In the Chicago viewing area, we will present the encore of “Curse of the Werewolf” at 11 am on the U.

Many thanks to everyone who gave us their well-wishes this pat week on the 41st anniversary of me bring Svengoolie- and, while there is no specific 41st anniversary merchandise,  today we are adding that new collectible item we’ve been hinting about- an item with several items! With so many people still spending a lot of time at home, it’s a bunch of items to help keep you entertained- including a puzzle, an activity book, some special toys, and even a “fun putty” egg ( kind of Silly, if you get my meaning) which was NOT something from Kerwyn’s nest! You even get some popcorn to enjoy during our show! You can order yours now by clicking here. Get yours while supplies last! It’s some Sven fun for any time or place- but certainly perfect when you’re right at home!

I thought I wasn’t going to make it because 1. My phone battery is charging and 2. My iPad doesn’t like to work after the battery is charged

Title of current hogans heroes episode is "the big broadcast". Hmmm, was Sven broadcasting back in WW2?

Before we move on from Boris Karloff(until Sven features one of his movies again,) I'd like to comment on what, I feel, is his most chilling performance. Mr. Karloff played many a mad scientist, but he portrayed a vampire only once-in one of Italian director Mario Bava's mid-sixties productions called Black Sabbath. In it he plays a particularly cold-blooded version of an Eastern European vamp called a Wurdulak-a type of vampire that returns after it's transition into the horrific fiend to brutally murder its own family. Karloff's character, when he's still "human," is creepy enough-but he practically oozes evil as the family's undead patriarch. If you've never seen it, it is definitely worth the effort to find a way to view it. The film is an anthology, so the vampire story isn't the only one-but as an extra treat Mr. Karloff does double-duty serving as a host who introduces the audience to each segment. Some inside jokes are included, and are very effective and funny.

Black Sabbath, Comedy of Terrors, You'll Find Out -- what an education this blog is! Thanks to all of you for illuminating that signpost up ahead with arrows in all directions.

This is a very effective horror anthology in the style of Karloff's TV series THRILLER. As you mentioned, it's a real treat seeing him in his only vampire role in "The Wurdulak."

I have always been a big Spock fan, and my mom used to always say he looked like this guy, Ish Kabibble, who was in Kay Kaiser's band. I never was able to see Ish Kabibble until I saw him in one of the Kay Kaiser movies years ago on one of the cable movie stations. I could see the similar haircut, but not that much resemblance to the late Leonard Nimoy. I don't think the movie I saw was "You'll Find Out," but I have to admit that I really only tuned in out of curiosity-and once I had satisfied my curiosity about Ish Kabibble, I really wasn't that interested in the movie.
Boris Karloff was just as funny in Comedy of Terrors as he was evil in Black Sabbath. He played the lovable and blissfully ignorant(most of the time)father-in-law of the not so lovable Vincent Price.

As I've mentioned before, horror wasn't really my family's cup of tea, so I don't remember Thriller as a kid
I've thought about tuning in to an episode some night on MEtv, but haven't done it yet.
The last anthology I saw was Dr. Terror's House of Horrors, cause-as I've said before-I love to watch just about anything with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. Both that and Black Sabbath are often included in lists of the best horror anthologies.

I know we’ve talked about, and I could’ve sworn I’ve seen it somewhere, but has Sven ever shown _Isle of the Dead_? It also features Karloff and the Greek _vorvolaka_, which is conceptually and linguistically related to the _wurdulak_.

Same here. Maybe all the storms around Chicago? Or Dwight Frye tangled up the weather kites?
