Try to Survive a Night in the "Old Dark House"- Tonight!

Posted on January 18, 2020

Tonight on MeTV- comedian Tom Poston finds that what should be a routine automobile delivery  becomes an on-going collection of oddball family members, greedy heirs, and murder victims- in what film buffs call an “old dark house” chiller- appropriately titled- the “Old Dark House”!

This 1963 horror/comedy, based on an earlier 1932 film that featured Boris Karloff, has Poston as an American car salesman based in London named Tom (what we call the “Tony Danza syndrome”- having the lead character sharing his name with the actor playing him) who has procured a car that his roommate, Casper Femm, has requested. The odd thing is- without explanation, roommate Casper is never home every night, while Tom is gone during the day. Casper asks Tom to deliver the car to his family estate – an old mansion located in distant Dartmoor.

Tom drives the auto to the Femm Mansion, running into some adversity along the way- and even within the old place! He meets the eccentric Femm family, including dotty uncle Potifer, attractive female cousins Cecily and Morganna, Aunt Agatha, and head of the family Roderick- and learns, to his shock, that one relative he is familiar with has died! A terrible storm has isolated them all in the estate for the night- and Tom learns about a huge fortune bequeathed to the family that requires them all to be present in the house every night at midnight. No wonder Casper was never at Tom’s apartment!

It seems one death in the family was not enough- as, every hour, another relative ends up being killed off! Tom finds himself a target as well, and struggles with members of the family he can’t be sure he can trust, one that seems to have returned to life, and a final threat that could take him and any remaining relatives into oblivion!

This movie is an odd collaborative effort of the beloved British horror bastion Hammer Studios- and our old pal, the king of American ballyhoo horror William Castle! I have purposely not revealed a lot about the story ( and ask that our blog commenters refrain from any spoilers as well- yes, this means YOU!) since we have not shown this film before, and I know many of our viewers have never seen it. We’ll introduce you to the cast, including one British actor we especially think you’ll know-explain a little about the production- and supply some Sven fun, including a new song, and some Old Dark Household Hints from Tombstone!

The “Old Dark House” premieres tonight on MeTV at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central, or check listings in your area ( or at www.metv.com ) for the time and channel. Feel free to join our Twitter fans in live-tweeting during the show, using the hashtag #svengoolie  ! Once again in the Chicago viewing area, due to sports programming, our usual show on the U will be airing at a special time- 10 am this morning- with an encore of “Revenge of the Creature”!  Next week, the show returns to its usual time for at least a couple weeks.

Here’s a reminder- I’ll be appearing at the new “Pet Supplies Plus” store at the Harlem and Cermak Plaza - 7133 Cermak Road- in Berwyn- yes, BERWYN! On Saturday, February 1st  from 1-3 pm! And- later next month, I’ll be appearing at the annual fantastic C2E2 comics and entertainment convention at Chicago’s McCormick Place!

Tonight- join us in spending the evening in a creepy old mansion where a vast inheritance is just to die for- literally!

Movie was fun! Would love it if you can show the James Whale version. That’s got a really interesting cast too: Karloff, Melvyn Douglas, Gloria Stuart, Charles Laughton, Ernest Thesiger.

May 11th 2019 we lost Tim Conway who was your favorite character he portrayed?
daleuhlmann MADave 57 months ago
Of his recurring characters, I always liked Mr. Tudball. Of his single-appearance sketch characters, my all-time favorite was lawyer F. Lee Bunny.

Happy 79th to iconic legend Neil Leslie Diamond, one of few artists who sold over 100 million records worldwide, with 38 songs featured in the Top 10 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary charts. Sadly, he announced his Parkinsons diagnosis in Jan 2018 and no longer performs live but still records and writes.

Renown PBS journalist and news anchor Jim Lehrer of the prestigious “MacNeil/Lehrer Report” passes at 85
He moderated 12 Presidential debates, provided stalwart coverage of the Kennedy Assassination and the Watergate scandal, an ex- Marine Lehrer’ no nonsense reporting presided over a time when genuine journalism was free of bias and opinion.
His motto “I am not in the entertainment business” rings true to form.
Your integrity and dignity will be sorely missed. RIP Jim Lehrer

Dave: The circus will still be in town tomorrow, but, as you said, hopefully, not all day and all night. I have my fingers and toes crossed that you and the other bloggers affected will still be able to enjoy Sven and Super Sci Fi Saturday.
Munsters daleuhlmann 57 months ago
The other tent from the circus will set up on. Sat, Mon and Tuesday.
daleuhlmann Munsters 57 months ago
Yes, indeed.
daleuhlmann MADave 57 months ago
Well, the circus will take a recess on Sunday. Unfortunately, it will still be in town tomorrow. As I said before, I hope it doesn't cut into Sven and Super Sci-fi Saturday for you or anybody else so affected.
daleuhlmann Munsters 57 months ago
Yes-- again, how far into any of those days, including tomorrow, seems to be anybody's guess.

Right. I visited there when I was in Germany some years ago. (Ironically, Dachau the town was and is something of an art colony.) Lots of nasty things happened at Dachau. The prisoners were mostly political -- including Catholic priests -- no doubt many Jews. The leaders were planning to start gassing and cremating, but had a team of prisoners building the facilities and the prisoners sabotaged the work so it never got finished.
Jack 57 months ago
Dachau was set up in 1933 as a concentration camp for the “protective custody” of political prisoners, but by 1938 switched emphasis to other “dangerous persons” such as Jews, Romani, homosexuals, and Jehovah’s Witnesses. Once war started, Dachau also held POWs.

Ostensibly, it was a work camp, hence the sign _Arbeit macht frei_, “Work Sets You Free.” Prisoners were used as forced labor to expand the camp and in the munitions plant. The site was originally a gunpowder and munitions factory, decommissioned after World War I.

Prisoners were executed by hanging and shooting, such as the mass murder of Soviet POWs on the Hebertshausen shooting range. Other prisoners were killed by the aforementioned medical experiments, forced labor, and arbitrary violence by guards and staff.

Use of poison gas was inconsistent at Dachau. Over 3000 prisoners were moved in 32 transports to be gassed at Hartheim Castle euthanasia facility in Austria. A gas chamber disguised as group showers was completed in 1944 in Barrack X at Dachau. The numbers executed there and whether by Zyklon B or another gas was used cannot be proven because the documentation was destroyed before the end of the war. A statement by a prisoner indicates the gas chamber was tested at least once on prisoners. Systematic mass killing by gas apparently never began at Dachau. [The English language Wikipedia article for “Dachau concentration camp” has a photo of a room labeled _Brausebad_ “shower bath” with the caption “The gas chamber” but no further comment. The corresponding German language article gives more detail in the section “Baracke X (Zweites Krematorium mit Gaskammerraum).”]

My parents had a large collection of 78s. I played them along with my LPs and 45s. Particularly Harry James since he grew up in Beaumont and I played the trumpet in junior high. Wore the grooves off 'Flight of the Bumblebee' and 'One O'clock Jump'.

We got our first Shar-Pei, Teddy, at the pound. She was a roommate surrender after her previous owner skipped town. Because she had been overfed and under-exercised, her wrinkles had filled in, and she looked like a gorgonopsid, a great big head with teeny tiny ears tapering down to a pointy tail.
PatS Jack 57 months ago
What a great name! I think I'll use that the next time I need to yell at another driver -- "Hey, watch where you're going, you gorgonopsid!"

Dale/Catbat - You know I’m so sad over John Karlen. I know I hadn’t seen him in anything of recent years. Had no idea he was in ill health, congestive heart failure. of course the ever tormented Willie Loomis, my favorite character. Not bad as Mr. Lacey and Cagney and Lacey either, very strong character on that show. Nice remembrance by two of his costars Katherine Leigh Scott and Tyne Daly that I Googled. RIP my sweet Willie 😔.
