What the…? More Puzzling Than Stonehenge- It’s “Godzilla’s Revenge”-Tonight!

Posted on February 25, 2017

We wind up our Godzilla month on MeTV with a kind of bizarre entry in the Godzilla series- though it's loaded with various monsters, and battles a-plenty- plus the Son of Godzilla- you might just be scratching your head when you witness - "Godzilla's Revenge"!

This late 60s-early 70s film- previously titled "All Monsters Attack"- comes from the  period in which Godzilla had been cast on the side of right- and had his adventures squarely aimed at his younger fans. We meet a lonely little boy named Ichiro with a vivid imagination- whose parents are often away from home due to their work. Ichiro is the victim of  local bullies-  and seems to have only two friends- a schoolgirl classmate and a wacky toy inventor! When the toymaker shows him a new invention- Ichiro asks him to make something that has to do with his favorite monsters- including Godzilla and his son, Minya  (Manilla) who dwell on Monster Island.

Via his wild imagination- Ichiro ends up visiting Monster Island- and having some run-ins with a few of the nasty monsters roaming there! He also finally meets Minya- who  actually speaks to him in a dopey cartoon character voice! The two have something in common (other than badly dubbed voices)- both find themselves the target of bullies- in particular, Minya has a  foe named Gabara -which happens to also be the name of Ichiro's worst tormentor!

Snapping back to reality, Ichiro goes exploring an old abandoned factory- where, unbeknownst to him, a couple of bank robbers  are hiding out- and takes some souvenirs- including one of the crooks' drivers license! When the bad guys find he has taken the license, and could bring the police down on them- they plot to nab the youngster!

Ichiro again makes a mental journey to Monster Island- and witnesses several bouts between Godzilla and his enemies. Young Minya also has a battle with the evil Gabara- and flees in terror. Big Daddy 'Zilla decides to train Junior to fight back, using his flame breath (in a comic sequence very similar to one in the film "Son of Godzilla")- and, just as they are making some progress- Ichiro is pulled back into the real world when the robbers grab him! Can Ichiro escape and defeat all his problems- and can Minya triumph as well?

Many have labelled this film one of the strangest Godzilla films ever- with use of stock footage, a built-in message about bullying, and plenty of mind-boggling content. Because it starts off rather slowly- and  this film is by no means a classic- I hope you'll forgive me if I add a little extra Sven entertainment to the first segment of the film. Plus, there's even more Sven fun , including another edition of our drawing game "Too Drawn Out"- and  a song featuring another scintillating trumpet solo by Doug Graves!

"Godzilla's Revenge" will take place tonight on MeTV at 10 pm eastern/pacific, 9 central, or check local listings- or at www.metv.com- for time and channel in your area. Chicago area viewers can get an encore of "Godzilla VS Mothra" at 11 am on our sister station, WCIU- the U!

Have you tried the new game on our site- giving you the opportunity to smack me with a chicken?
