Who Was That Lady I Saw You With? That's No Lady- it's Lionel Barrymore and His Deadly- "Devil Doll"- Tonight!

Posted on October 17, 2020

Tonight on MeTV- just like last week, we find a scientist worried about the growing population of the world- but with a plan that is exactly the OPPOSITE of the previous show’s Dr. Deemer’s scheme! This time it’s size-reversal- which a prison cohort diverts to a means of revenge by creating more than one lethal “Devil Doll”!

There’s been an escape from Devil’s Island! The convicts on the run are scientist Marcel- and Paul Lavond, who was framed by his Parisian bank business associates for theft and murder. They manage to sneak off to where Marcel’s wife Malita is maintaining their secret laboratory, aided by a not-so-bright servant girl.  Marcel, though in ill health, shows Paul his amazing discovery- a way to shrink living things, with the idea of shrinking the earth’s population so that current food sources of normal size can feed many many more people- of miniscule size!

Paul thinks it’s a shocking procedure- until he realizes it is actually the perfect way to get back at the “friends” who sent him up the river! He returns to Paris, disguising himself – in a wig and dress -as “Madame Mandalip”, proprietor of a toy store that specializes in dolls. The only thing is- the dolls are real people that he has shrunken using Marcel’s procedure, who are completely under his control- and become the method of eliminating his enemies!

Paul sets out on his path of revenge while he keeps tabs on his beautiful daughter, who has been shamed by her father’s conviction and hates him for it. Meanwhile, the men who crafted the plot to have him blamed for the crimes they committed begin to fear for their lives, now that Paul is on the loose! Little do they realize that they are being targeted by  not only Paul- but a devil doll!

This 1936 horror film, directed by the legendary Todd Browning of “Dracula” and “ Freaks” fame, is based on a novel by Abraham Merritt entitled “Burn Witch Burn”- and has attained cult status. It stars the lovely Maureen O’ Sullivan as the estranged daughter- and the amazing sights of not only miniaturized people, but also a cross-dressing Lionel Barrymore ! The effects, mostly rougher versions of ones we have seen in later films like “Dr. Cyclops” and “Incredible Shrinking Man”, are still amazing for the times- especially when the actors are placed on actual over-sized sets and  props. We’ll talk about the effects, run down the cast list,  provide a new song – and have yours truly become a victim of the punifying procedure!

“Devil Doll” runs tonight on MeTV at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central- for those unsure of where to find us in your area, please check your local listings or at www.metv.com . During the show, you can accept MeTV’s invitation to join the many fans on Twitter who live-Tweet during the show. Again last week, we were trending high nationally, thanks to our viewers using the hashtag  #svengoolie . In our Chicago viewing area, we have the encore of “Tarantula” at 11 am on our main local station, CW 26.

The new Svengoolie phone cases are a big hit-make sure you check the various styles at our store on our website- and rumor has it there will be more Sven merchandise coming fairly soon- perfect for holiday giving! So, make sure you check back at the store occasionally.

Join us tonight on MeTV – for a production that will NOT have you singing “Hello Dolly!”

I remember seeing MIGHTY JOE YOUNG as a kid, rerun or re-release at the drive-in with my parents.

The nightclub tug-of-war between strong men and Joe inspired me to want to grow up strong enough to unbend a horseshoe with my bare hands.

I don't know if anybody else had mentioned this earlier, but the three Barrymores (John, Lionel, and Ethel) appeared for the first and only time together on-screen in MGM's 1932 historical drama RASPUTIN AND THE EMPRESS. Lionel played Rasputin, the monk.

You sure he didn't play the Empress?

Now, wouldn't THAT have been inspired casting?

Hey, group, I recently saw a couple of Youtube videos featuring Sven (one as the Son of Svengoolie) performing a parody of the Andrews Sisters' "Booglie Wooglie Bugle Boy" as "The Booglie Wooglie Boy from Berwyn." While the Berwyn joke had been partially inspired by ROWAN AND MARTIN'S LAUGH-IN and Johnny Carson's making fun of "beautiful downtown Burbank" (a suburb of Los Angeles), it had actually been first inspired by Cleveland, Ohio's Channel 8's horror movie host Ghoulardi (Ernie Anderson), who made jokes about Parma (which was a suburb of Cleveland) and its largely Polish-American lifestyle largely associated with polka music, Polish foods like kielbasa, pink lawn flamingoes, and white socks. Later Cleveland horror movie host The Ghoul (Ron Sweed) carried on the tradition of spoofing Parma. Am I not right on both fronts, Islander and Berwyn 1979? At any rate, Jerry G. Bishop (the original Svengoolie) had been a radio D. J. in Cleveland during Ghoulardi's brief and glorious tenure, and had no doubt remembered the Parma jokes in his references to Berwyn.

Please pay no attention to the man behind the curtain
daleuhlmann Catbat 48 months ago
Hey, no fair!😮
Sven has talked about all of the above in interviews.
PatS SvenAdministrator 48 months ago
True, but not everyone has seen/heard those interviews. Also, the TV program LAUGH-IN popularized "beautiful downtown Burbank"; maybe Carson did, too, but I don't recall it. Hey, making fun of the "hicks" from "out of town" goes back to Greek drama, if not before.

Well, I think I"ve seen Mighty Joe Young, but I think it was the newer version. So maybe when I see it tomorrow I"ll know whether I've seen it before.

Jack DrClayton 48 months ago
Re: Mighty Cuppa Joe and/or Mighty Cup O’ Joe—Terry Moore was raised Mormon, and as of a 2010 _Los Angeles Times_ article is still. No “hot drinks”* for her!

*Caffeinated beverages, as per the LDS _Word of Wisdom_.

I read that and blanked -- "Terry Moore"? Oh yeah -- the lead female in Saturday's movie.
Jack PatS 48 months ago
I can understand the confusion. Terry Moore, the cartoonist, is the creator of _Motor Girl_, who hangs out with a big monkey…Here’s a spotter’s guide: Terry Moore, the cartoonist
Terry Moore, the actress

I got the latest Archie McFee catalogue yesterday. In addition to the monster ornament set (Frankenstein’s monster, werewolf, and vampire), they also have a rubber chicken ornament.

Just please, do not throw this hand-blown glass “rubber” chicken at Svengoolie.
PatS TheKodakKid 48 months ago
Dandy! Lots of cool stuff they supply. Or as they say, "Funny Gifts, Toys, Novelties and Weird Stuff." (Better luck if you search for Archie McPhee.) Also -- racing rubber chickens on wheels!

And if you want to decorate the crypt beneath you castle in authentic Transylvanian style, they have the Office Possum...

As a member of the possum lodge, I want one. Remember if the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy. (Wow, auto correct finished my phrase for me, how cool is that)
