Why Rhedosaurus When You Can Watch the Movie- " Beast from 20,000 Fathoms"-Tonight!

Posted on November 14, 2020

Tonight on MeTV- after the warm weather many parts of our nation experienced earlier this week has given way to colder temperatures, our movie starts out in the winter-like wonderland of the frozen north- where a not-so-wonderful atomic blast releases a different kind of visitor from the North Pole than we’ll be expecting next month- a prehistoric creature! Ray Harryhausen’s stop- motion artistry brings mankind face to face with the “Beast from 20,000 Fathoms”!

This 1953 film begins with an experimental crew up near the Arctic Circle, ready to document the results of a nuclear bomb test. Checking out things near ground zero after the blast, two of the men see what looks like a dinosaur lumbering through the snow! The movement of this massive and mysterious beast causes an avalanche- from which there is only a single survivor!

Hospitalized and returned to civilization, that survivor, Prof. Tom Nesbitt, finds that no one will believe that what he saw was not a hallucination- and that a real creature exists. Before long, some unexplained attacks seem to provide proof that what he saw does exist- and he finds some support from a young female assistant to an expert in prehistoric history. They are determined to show the world that something is out there-and, after corroborating the story with a survivor of a mystery attack by the same beast, Tom finally gets the military and even expert Prof. Elson to join him in the search for what they believe is a rhedosaurus- a beast long thought to be extinct!

Their search for the creature not only brings a definite sighting, but additional tragedy attributed to the beast. Things get even more frightening when the prehistoric monster attacks a major city – with some deadly unexpected effects    ( that certainly strike a chord with some current events) beyond the physical destruction!

This film features the amazing stop-motion work that Harryhausen is famous for, and utilized some of the techniques he created and developed to have the monster inserted into live footage. One of the most memorable scenes involves a policeman confronting the creature! We’ll tell you about the actors, as well as about the production, thanks to information from Roy P. Webber, author of “The Dinosaur Films of Ray Harryhausen”. And, as usual, there’s a song and Sven shtick a plenty!

“Beast from 20,000 Fathoms” surfaces tonight on MeTV at 8pm eastern/pacific,  7 pm central- if you don’t know the time and channel in your area, please check your local listings or at www.metv.com . MeTV invites you to join the many viewers who live-Tweet during the show on Twitter, using the hashtag #svengoolie - make SURE you add that hashtag to your posts! Chicago area viewers get an encore of the 1950s classic “Them!”- at 11 am this morning on our main local station, CW 26.

Make sure you check out the store on our site here- where you can pick up both the Svengoolie Studio Set, with  the Sven coffin, a Sven action figure,, and a little rubber chicken for it to hold; and the Sven At Home box with what could become stocking stuffers for your family and friends- plus- the new Sven coffee mugs- in 4 different designs that Sven fans are snapping up!

Make sure you tune in to MeTV tonight for incredible Harryhausen artistry that will astound you!

At the opening of this weeks movie, Sandra walks into the baggage depot and butters up Wilbur because of his brain. Was Sandra already in on the scheme to transfer Wilbur’s brain into the Monster?

I believe she did!

Pretty sure she was on the hunt

"Who's on first". A classic routine performed many times in film, on TV, and radio. This version from the 1945 film "The Naughty Nineties".

Here's some more things to fathom:

Lon Chaney, Jr. starred in two versions of the same story, both titled SIXTEEN FATHOMS DEEP. In the 1934 version, he played the hero; in the 1948 remake, he played the villain!

We also have a fourth-season, hour-long episode of the original TWILIGHT ZONE called "The 30-Phantom Grave," starring Simon Oakland Mike Kellin, and Bill Bixby.

Fathom that!

What bugged me reading up on the two versions is that for the 1934 film version SIXTEEN FATHOMS DEEP (with Creighton Chaney as the good guy), most sources I found used the poster for the 1948 remake 16 FATHOMS DEEP (with Lloyd Bridges as hero, Lon Chaney as villain). Gee, if you search a little, you can find the 1934 poster.

Trivia: the movie is sometimes listed under the title of the source story: "Sixteen Fathoms Under".

We've been talking a lot about fathoms and leagues this week. Here's one where the monster's home has to be measured in leagues: It's THE PHANTOM FROM 10,000 LEAGUES.

Thanks Dale, I've seen this movie before. Sven showed this one on his program. I think it was before he went national.
MADave daleuhlmann 48 months ago
I think I may have that on DVD not sure but I'll have to check?
daleuhlmann MADave 48 months ago
It may very well be, Dave.

According to the web, "On land, the league is most commonly defined as three miles, though the length of a mile could vary from place to place and depending on the era. At sea, a league is three nautical miles (3.452 miles; 5.556 kilometres)." If that's the given comparison, no place in the ocean is known to be more than about 2 leagues (6.8 miles). Hollywood pulls another one!

A little interesting trivia: Footage from THE BEAST FROM 20,000 FATHOMS appears in the 2008 movie CLOVERFIELD, along with frames from the original KING KONG, as well as THEM! A scene from BEAST also shows up in GREMLINS 2: THE NEW BATCH.
The1Butler daleuhlmann 48 months ago
Never thought I'd see old clips in new er movies .
Islander daleuhlmann 48 months ago
Dale, Can you be a little more specific as to what type footage it is ? Otherwise, I'm going to have to get these two dvd's out of the dvd trunk and watch them this afternoon. And I have things to do ! You are just a pain sonetimes. Lol
Aceman2 Islander 48 months ago
I did some research that confirmed what Dale said but could not find the details you asked for.

Your mission, Islander, should you choose to accept it, is to view the 2 DVDs and advise which clips appeared and when they appeared. As always, should you or any of your Sven Force be caught or killed, the Aceman will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This text will self-destruct in ten seconds. Good luck, Mike.

With the internet we've made great strides fighting COCD, but more needs to be done. Please contribute to the Cinematic Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Foundation today!

At this point in my life, the only mission I undertake is to wake up every morning. But thanks for the thought. Maybe offer this mission to 008.
