Wrap Up the February Sven Schedule with Karloff’s “Mummy”!

Posted on February 27, 2016

Tonight- he goes "for a little walk"... and the curse of ancient Egypt brings danger to all who come into contact with- "The Mummy"!

Yes, it's the original 1932 classic- with Boris Karloff as the menacing revived mummy of an ancient Egyptian priest who defied the laws of the gods and their followers- in the name of love. It all begins  with the discovery of a tomb that contains a box with a mysterious scroll- along with the mummified remains of someone who obviously was interred alive due to some sort of indiscretion. While members of the party argue about whether to continue with the examination of the discovery- a foolish young associate deciphers and reads the scroll- which revives the Mummy- who departs, taking the scroll,  as the hysterical young man watches!

The  expedition is halted- until ten years later, when the son of one of the original explorers returns to find the lost tomb of the princess Ankh-es-en-amon. The sudden arrival of a weathered Egyptian named Ardath Bey proves to be beneficial- for now- as he reveals the place to dig to find the princess' tomb. The result-  her mummified body and many amazing artifacts are recovered, and sent to the Cairo Museum.

Ardath Bey has his own agenda- and it isn't to be helpful to the expedition partners. He seeks to find a way to revive his lost love, using the Scroll of Thoth that he purloined years ago-and will not let any man get in his way-nor survive his power. When he stumbles upon a young woman whom he senses is the reincarnation of Ankh-es-en-amon, decides he must help her remember her past- then  restore her to his side by killing her and using the scroll to bring her back and serve as his bride! Will the Mummy claim more lives- including that of the innocent woman he would have as his princess?

This is a true classic Universal monster flick- and, though some feel it is slow-going at times, it is a wonderfully atmospheric story with Karloff's character both tragic and terrifying. We get Edward van Sloan - "Dracula"'s  Van Helsing- as yet another wise doctor out to defeat a supernatural foe. We'll give you background on the production and cast- and- share a memorable visit with a fine actor who played a confederate of a newer version of  "The Mummy"- Kevin J. O'Connor- who played Beni opposite Brendan Fraser, as well as taking on the old Lugosi role of Ygor in 2004's "Van Helsing". Plus- a new song- and more!
