You Can’t “Return to Sender”-Because “It Came from Outer Space”-Tonight!

Posted on May 3, 2014

Tonight on Me-TV, it's a frightening sci fi tale from the fabulous '50s- as an amateur astronomer and author  fights to convince the locals that there is danger nearby- and that "It Came from Outer Space"!

This 1957 favorite, from the mind of Ray Bradbury, finds us in the desert town of Sand Rock, Arizona- where a star-gazing young author and his girlfriend are observing the late night sky  when they see what they believe is a meteorite come streaking across the sky-and crashing down to earth! The author, John, is excited to visit the impact point- but, as he treks into the crater, he is amazed to see that it isn't a meteorite- but some sort of alien ship- and, even more astounding- there appears to be something inside it! A sudden avalanche  covers the ship, and John barely makes it back to the surface- but- he has a tough time convincing anyone , including the town's sheriff,of what he saw!

His girlfriend Ellen is skeptical, but joins him in trying to find the truth about what really has arrived- and then, strange things start to happen- glimpses of weird creatures, trails of sparkling slime, and the disappearance of local citizens- some of whom reappear, but seem cold, distant, and totally unlike themselves! Eventually, the sheriff believes that there's something unearthly in the mix- but, taking the wrong kind of action could doom countless people!

I'm happy we can bring this movie to you, as part of this month's theme-"It Came from the Drive-In"- and Richard Carlson's performance helps maintain the uneasy tension  of the story. We'll talk about him, his co-star Barbara Rush, and others in the cast- including a favorite from"Gilligan's Island"- and, we'll have a new song for you, as well as a commercial for a unique hair removal tool that's truly "in your face"!

"It Came from Outer Space" runs on Svengoolie tonight at 10 pm eastern/pacific, 9 pm central, and, of course, check your local listings for when it runs in your area.In our Chicago area, we give viewers another look at the "House of Frankenstein" at 11 am  on WCIU, the U !

If you're up really late after the show tonight, you can tune in to WGN radio (720 AM- available across most of the country!) just after 3 am (central time)- when (in my secret identity, who hosted the "Stooge-a-palooza" show) I'll be joining my pal Dave Plier to talk to Moe Howard's daughter Joan Maurer about her famous father and uncles, and lots of 3 Stooges history! I'm told the interview will be posted as a podcast on Sunday at wgnradio.com !

And- last chance to vote in the national Rondo horror and fantasy awards- voting ends Sunday night at midnight! You can vote for me or whoever your favorite horror host is, in category 24 - and remember, you can vote for one category, some, or all- just follow the instructions, so your vote will count!
