You Thought the Doctor Was No Longer in Practice? WRONG! It's the "Revenge of Frankenstein" -Tonight!

Posted on December 5, 2020

Tonight on MeTV, we start off the holiday month with that surly old elf Victor Frankenstein, as always, constructing something far more sinister than toys- working under an alias in a new location ( not the North Pole- that as last week’s movie). While appearing to be a true benefactor, he’s actually making a list- of body parts- and checking it twice- in hopes of not ending up with another uncontrollable monster- as he sets out to take the  “Revenge of Frankenstein”!

This 1958 Hammer horror reveals now Baron Frankenstein escaped his death sentence supposedly fulfilled at the conclusion of “Curse of Frankenstein”. We find him a few years later, having set up a new practice in the town of Carlsbruck, and practicing medicine to an eager gaggle of wealthy female patients- whose only illness often seems to be heart palpitations when they visit the doctor!  This medical practitioner appears to have a charitable and noble agenda, since he also heads up a clinic for the poor. Though considered quite the model citizen -a young visitor from the local medical board named Hans seems to know the truth. He has recognized Victor- but has his own agenda- he won’t expose the doctor’s true identity- if he takes Hans on as an assistant in his secret experiments! Although Hans knows the Baron’s history of ungodly work- he finds it so exciting and groundbreaking that he wants to be a part of it!.

The Baron takes him on, and shows him his hidden laboratory, where another assistant, the malformed Karl, helps in preparations for new experiments- while hoping the doctor will see fit to give him a new, more perfect body. Hans and the Baron begin their quest to transplant a living brain into a single complete body- this time using a different tactic than previous attempts, with one assembled out of various parts from different victims. The end result- Karl’s wish is fulfilled, as his brain is successfully installed in a new body!

An unexpected development occurs when a pretty young lady, eager to serve  the poor, volunteers to join the staff of the doctor’s hospital. In her new role, she ends up tending to the “new” Karl, with no idea how he has arrived at his current state. Frankenstein’s grand plan is upset when Karl realizes that the doctor plans to take him on a world tour, touting his success by putting him on display as a scientific miracle. Karl has no desire to be on exhibit, like some kind of freak-and promptly escapes from the hospital!

Not only is Karl gone, but suddenly there is an additional problem- an animal specimen that a similar transplant was performed on suddenly becomes violent and dangerous. Hans worries that the same thing may happen to the missing Karl – but Victor downplays that possibility- until a series of murders occur… and it would seem that Frankenstein has, once again, created a monster!

Peter Cushing reprises his role of Baron Frankenstein, picking up where the previous Hammer film ended. You’ll  recognize other familiar faces from the famed studio, and we’ll tell you all about them. We’ll use “Svensurrounded” to turn some scenes from the film into some classic sitcoms, as well as taking a moment to bring back a beloved Sven parody of a certain favorite bawdy British comedian!

The full color “Revenge of Frankenstein” appears tonight at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central, or, if you’re not sure of time and channel where you are, please check your local listings, or at www.metv.com . Those curious about Hanukkah, I encourage you to get an Apocrypha and read both books of the Maccabees. The battle for the temple is just a bit part of the story. Possibly the only place in scriptures to tell the story of a guy crushed by an elephant. Yes, really.

Should I re-post "The Nightmare before during and after) Svengoolie"? My own take on the poem, posted four or five years ago. "When there on my widescreen, a whoop and a clatter / Convinced me that something was gravely the matter..."

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly do a spot-on recreation of the David Bowie and Bing Crosby "Peace on Earth/Little Drummer Boy” duet from the 1977 Bing Crosby Christmas Special—well, almost spot-on, it was on Funny or Die. The Monarch and Mrs. Dr. The Monarch (formerly Dr. Girlfriend) have also done a recreation of the Bowie/Crosby duet. Guess who sang Der Bingle’s part?

A cinema in New York City showing ‘Return of The Vampire’, and offering a bond for every seat, in the ‘Back the Attack’ World War II war bond campaign, 1943.

What a great poster. I shows that back then, like now, people really needed diversion from the stresses of daily life. Last time I was in my local AMC theater, they had tremendous posters (3-D & animated), to attract viewers to see the movies. Great stuff.
Jack Klaatu 48 months ago
What a bill with _Return of the Vampire”! Popeye “Jolly Good Furlough” (Famous Studios distributed by Paramount), Pluto (actually it’s Goofy) “The Olympic Champ” (Walt Disney Productions distributed by RKO in the 1940s), a George Pal Puppetoon “Jasper Goes Fishing” (the Jasper series deserves more comment than space permits here) and newsreels by Pathé and Universal. Would they even allow a bill like this today, unless Disney owned them all?

In regards to the Me TV websIte piece on Ernie "Ghoulardi" Anderson that Berwyn1979 had mentioned, it was very informative, but, as a couple of the comments following the article pointed out, it did not mention Anderson's later announcing work on THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW, nor the fact that he occasionally appeared in some small bit parts on the program. Also, despite what the article said, Ghoulardi's SHOCK THEATER NEVER showed the Universal horror classics. Instead, he primarily showed 1950s and early 1960s drive-in-type titles from the AIP, Allied Artists, and United Artists film libraries, such as THE SHE-CREATURE, ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS, and CURSE OF THE FACELESS MAN. WJW, Channel 8, which produced and aired Ghoulardi's show, didn't acquire the classic Universal package until the fall of 1971, when the station purchased these films from Cleveland's WKBF, Channel 61. At that point, Ghoulard's successors, Hoolihan and Big Chuck, started showing them on Channel 8 for about the following eight-and-a-half years
Berwyn1979 daleuhlmann 48 months ago
Yes I to notice that it was lacking in some details but I still found it cool and thought I share it with you. I pointed out Erine being by Tim's side on The Carol Burnett Show and on Tim's many TV shows in the comments. I also wish they could have put a picture of him as Ghoulardi and not just him on Drew Carey's T-shirt (although that was cool). Oh well, live and let live.
Berwyn1979 Berwyn1979 48 months ago
In case you care. I'm LucyI'mHome1951 on MeTV page. I made that page long before I came on here. That's why the titles are different.
daleuhlmann Berwyn1979 48 months ago
Oh, thanks, Berwyn, by all means, for sharing this blast from the past with us! I actually have very fuzzy memories of Ghoulardi, but much clearer memories of his Channel 8 Friday night successors, Hoolihan and Big Chuck, and of his Channel 61, Saturday night protegee and imitator, Ron ("The Ghoul") Sweed.
TheKodakKid Berwyn1979 48 months ago
Berwyn1979, good to know your other handle on the MeTV site.

One question I have. What is this “Drew Carey Show” that they talked about? I don’t ever remember seeing it on MeTV. (Although an awful lot of folks who are on shows on MeTV turn up on that show). Surely they aren’t talking about something that can be seen on another network (and there are no other networks.)
1MikeM Berwyn1979 48 months ago
Drew Carey is a funny guy! He was a guest on the Tonight Show w/Johnny Carson. Johnny called him over to the desk and said "You're funny" Carey replied "Thanks, you're funny too" Johnny laughed.
