You Want It? You Got It! "It! The Terror From Beyond Space"-Tonight!

Posted on February 5, 2022

Tonight on MeTV-it’s a 1950s science fiction saga that set the groundwork for a future big screen blockbuster- as a recovery mission to Mars becomes a deadly game of survival when an unexpected stowaway turns out to be “It! The Terror from Beyond Space”!

In this 1958 sci fi chiller, an Earth spaceship has arrived on Mars with a somber task- picking up the last surviving member of the previous mission that crash-landed on the red planet. All the other crewmen are dead- and this lone survivor, Col. Edward Carruthers, is suspected of having murdered them all! Carruthers claims that some sort of creature is responsible, not him, but the crew of the recovery ship seems to doubt that. As they prepare to take off to return to Earth, a storage bay door is accidentally left open- this is rectified, and the ship blasts off.

Carruthers receives some rather cold treatment from the crew, especially the man in charge, Commander Van Heusen, who thinks Carruthers killed his fellow astronauts to have the food supplies all to himself, so he could survive longer, since he had no knowledge of if or when a rescue ship might arrive. Carruthers is steadfast in his story that some sort of humanoid life form is responsible- but Van Heusen refuses to believe it. He demands that a crew member always have the suspect within sight, as the journey back home continues. The only somewhat sympathetic person on board is Ann Anderson, who also happens to be Van Heusen’s girlfriend. ( Yes, she is part of the crew, not just along for the ride.)

The tension level begins to rise even more when a crew member, Kienholz, suddenly appears to have vanished without explanation. The crew begins to search for him- including brothers Gino and Bob Finelli, and even Carruthers is allowed to join the search. Kienholz still can’t be found- and then Bob realizes that Gino, who was with them searching, is also missing!

They return to the last area where Gino was- and finally find the dead body of Kienholz! Shortly after that, Gino, barely alive, is discovered in some ductwork- but an attempt to rescue him is cut short when the savage creature also appears in the ductwork and attacks the rescuer, who barely escapes! This leads to the first attempts to kill the creature- but the various conventional weapons at their disposal have little effect on their sinister stowaway! (I’m sure we can all question the use of conventional guns as a weapon aboard a space ship- couldn’t a bullet pass through the ship’s hull and endanger the crew’s oxygen supply?)

The crew begins its battle for survival against this lifeform which is determined to use the humans as food- and the danger increases as the monster makes its way up the multi-level ship- trapping the crew in tighter and tighter premises. Can they discover a way to stop the deadly creature that can claw through metal hatches- or will they meet the same fate as Carruthers’ original group?

This film works well with the claustrophobic feel of being trapped in the finite space of the rocket ship, and the savage power of the Martian beast. We can all get a bit of a laugh from the fact that the film is set in the far-flung future year of- 1973! And yes, this film was without a doubt what suggested the plot of the 1979 science fiction/horror classic “Alien”…but certainly at a much smaller budget. We’ll go over the cast list, which includes familiar faces like Marshall Thompson and Dabs Greer, as well as the man who plays the creature, Ray “Crash Corrigan”. Plus, we’ll give Boddy Sorrell the chance to play our drawing game “Too Drawn Out”- salute a good friend from the comics world- and provide another new song featuring a rather popular soloist!

“It! The Terror From Beyond Space” blasts off tonight at 8 pm eastern/pacific, 7 central time. 109 comments needed to tie the record. Don’t think it will happen in 14 minutes. Second biggest record ain’t bad though.

I am a technological refusnik. Or Luddite. Or how ever you might describe someone who doesn't know how these things work.
The very fact that I can get on here at all just boggles my poor little brain.

Earlier I had some fun with posting a mock birthday pic of Karloff as THE Mummy- I suspect that he himself laughed at the extreme aging process that Jack Pierce had rendered. Here's the real picture from today, including the big screen designed for the aging and blind composer

Many, many heartfelt thanks to all of you on the blog! It's been a wonderful day, made all the better by the warm and wonderful birthday wishes from the Gooliac community! You, yes all of you, ARE AWESOME!!

Since we're off to Cleveland area tomorrow for the birthday celebration for Regina's mom, followed by dinner at a very fine restaurant, no birthday cake tonight. A very nice dinner prepared by one of the best Oriental chefs in Central Ohio. Great ambiance, excellent wait staff, and some of the worst elevator music in history; but I digress. When Mrs. T opened her fortune cookie, she started laughing her head off. Behold:

Mine is at the top of the picture, hers is underneath. I will leave it to your vivid collective imaginations to guess what I said to her next.

When TIWM and the Saturday cartoon shows started there were questions about skits, and some of the "preview" features on Saturday, an SvenAdministrater said that part of the reason was to help viewers avoid "cartoon overload". we may think that 6 'toons on 60 minutes is not enough, but making it 8 or 9 might be too much.
FKrueger Drang 32 months ago
Having Bill and Toony are OK. This is probably another example of upper management not listening to the regular guy.
FKrueger FKrueger 32 months ago
My theory is that Goldie and Mr Quizzer are related to upper management and this is the only way they can get a job in show biz

Watching a scary movie on a Weigel affiliate. Besides I don't think Svengoolie could show this. (no offense Sven)

Hey, I said "easy", not quick!

Hey, group, before we bid farewell to outer space and head for the Black Lagoon and Marineland, I'd just like to add that IT! THE TERROR was not the only monster that prop and costume designer Paul Blaisdell made that he did not wear himself in a movie. He had also designed, for Allied Artists, the Tabonga or tree monster costume for FROM HELL IT CAME, which was designed by the Don Post Studios of Hollywood (photo#1). I have been unable, however, to discover the identity of the person who donned the costume for that movie--a stunt performer would be my best guess.

Also, Blaisdell took better care of his props and costumes than other performers did. Sven explained how Ray ("Crash") Corrigan almost ruined the monster's too small-for-his-dome headpiece for IT! THE TERROR, but Blaisdell was able to reuse his She-Creature outfit (photo#2) twice. He slightly modified it for VOODOO WOMAN (photo#3), before restoring it to its full, original glory for GHOST OF DRAGSTRIP HOLLOW (photo#4 and photo#5). Thus, the designer ended up playing his creation all three times.
Thereman daleuhlmann 32 months ago
Great stuff! Thanks for including the shot of Paul Blaisdell.
Jack daleuhlmann 32 months ago
I think the actor who portrayed Tabonga went into a witness protection program.
