Vote for TV's greatest spinoff!

Because not every election needs to be stressful!

Some of the best television shows started on other shows! Sometimes the spinoff even eclipses the original.

Here's what we want to know: What do you think is the greatest spinoff of all time? Which of these shows do you think tops the rest, including the show that spawned it?

Here's the thing though, we want some real thought and effort in your pick. So, after making your selection, do us a favor and explain your reasoning in the comments section below. Was it because you're already comfortable with these characters from their time on an earlier program? Or is this spinoff a breath of fresh air after several seasons of its previous incarnation? Let us know! Start a discussion! Have fun!

(P.S. we recognize that The Andy Griffith Show is technically a spin-off, but, c'mon, let's give some other shows a chance here!)

  1. What is TV's greatest spinoff?

Honeymooners were a spin-off?! Whaaaaat?
BenSobeleone jimmyvici 1 month ago
Yep, The Honeymooners were a spinoff of Cavalcade of Stars and The Jackie Gleason Show. The Honeymooners were sketches on those shows and the sketches were only about 10 minutes long.

It was a tossup between Mama's Family and Gomer Pyle USMC.
I went with Gomer, probably just because I have been watching it more than MF lately. But I love both shows and I think they are both great spinoffs.

Andy Griffith show it was a spin off of the Dave Tomas show
cperrynaples hehman 1 month ago
No, it's Danny Thomas! I wonder who you thought Dave Tomas was: Either the guy from SCTV, the father who started Wendy's.or the cop played by Tony Musante in 1973...LOL!

100%. Frasier was funnier than Seinfeld ever was.

Wasn't Frasier a spinoff of Cheers?
BenSobeleone KamariTux 1 month ago
Yep. Dr. Frasier Crane, that's the guy!

I can sorta accept AfterMASH, but really W*A*L T*E*R? Besides the unnecessary punctuation [the letters DON'T spell an abreviation] and the fact that the character was usually called Radar, it was an unsold pilot that only ran ONCE!
PS It got a ZERO, along with Joanie Loves Chachi and Joey! Both horrible spinoffs!

Archie bunkers place was the best that show was so funny

Yes, but most reference books consider ABP a continuation of All In The Family, not a spinoff!

Port Charles (1997-2003), spinoff of General Hospital. However ironically didn't care for General Hospital as much but do love Port Charles 100%!

Soaps don't count! However,I have a Bonus Question: What soap opera had TWO spinoffs?

100%, picked Frazer, knew it was the big hit. But lots of the other were pretty good. Some we could have done without.

I voted for Frasier and of course it was in the lead. While there are other great shows on the list, Frasier completely took everyone by surprise and became one of TV's biggest hits.

Also, it still seems current despite being 30 years off

I voted for the show that I'd most like to see on MeTV, just so I can have the chance to watch it. So: "AfterMASH."

Better call Saul.

Why? He's only a TV character...LOL!

Of the shows listed, I had to put in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. It's one of the most consistently=-performing shows on television for over 25 years and remains a showcase for some of the most talented writers and dramatic performances to this day.

But I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge The Simpsons as one of the best spinoffs, and yes, it's a spinoff of The Tracey Ullman Show, which showcased the characters in weekly segments.

"Law and Order:SVU" probably because it's been on for what...50 years it seems like. "Better Call Saul" is more of a prequel than a sequel but still has my vote. "Breaking Bad" is one of the greatest shows of all time. "Saul" equaled the style and quality of that show so it's number one in my book. "Frasier" had not just a good run but a great run after "Cheers" so it's right there for top spot. Tough call.

Actually, it's 25 years! Also, if they had included ALL the L&O spinoffs, the list would have been TWICE as long...LOL!
sagafrat69 cperrynaples 1 month ago
Yes. I knew it was 25. I was beening a little sarcastic. I wouldn't be surprised in 50 years someone will create another L&O spinoff. This franchise is like the battery. It keeps going...and going and going with no end in sight. Crazy.
