What is the greatest Western of all time?

Does it star John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, or someone else?

Hee-yaw!

Here's the thing... We're not going to be able to list every single great Western. We're including a list of movies frequently cited as some of the best in the genre. So, this is just a selection.

We know you're going to have a few picks that we missed. We're hoping you'll do everyone the favor of sharing your choice in the comments section below. That way, we'll all spark a big discussion. Because that's what this is all about!

So, with that... Here is a list of great Westerns. Pick one we've included, or choose "Other," and tell us what your pick is in the comments.

  1. What is the best Western ever put on film?

What is the greatest Western of all time?

Good. I thought I was being replaced by the next upcoming New Movie Master. Those horror/sci-fi films. I have 4D Man. The others pretty sure I can get those too. Just passed on them before, Bucket Of Blood and Attack of the Giant leeches.

I saw the movie and was disappointed that it focused more on the commanding officer than the code talkers. I read a book about them. An ingenious idea and code that worked.

Come one come all to the MeTv Friday Night Movie Quiz.
Where everyone can take a guess or make comments to other quizzers.
There will be extra bonus movies for just coming by. Including entertainment for all. Feel free to ask questions, copy movie links and just plain join in the fun via communication. The MQ will be up until the movie is guessed and an hour to look over and pick out what you wish. Have fun doing so. There are no wrong answers but the first one to guess the correct movie gets their names put up for getting it correctly. See you @ https://www.metv.com/quiz/theres-no-way-that-you-can-guess-the-best-picture-winner-from-the-director-alone

What about all the Audie Murphy westerns? The Unforgiven with Audie, Burt Lancaster, & Audrey Hepburn.
Then there’s Tumbleweed. And there’s about 10 others!
And Gregory Peck in the Bravados & The Gunfighters.

I am also adding next week the movie Anora (2024). Last week this movie won best picture and Oscar at the Academy Awards. We will be racking up some wonderful movies in the future.

I had to go Other. There are just too many great Westerns to choose only 1.

I love Eldorado with John Wayne, Robert Mitchum and James Caan. It had a great theme song too! Another Robert Mitchum western I love is Five Card Stud, also starring Dean Martin.

The Big Country, with Burl Ives, Chuck Connors, Gregory Peck, et al.

Yeah! Where the heck is the Big Country?!? Peck, Heston, Chuck Connors, & Oscar winner Burl Ives?!? This must have been a frosty Friday! Maybe Clem Marrigan screwed up this too. Or was it the Major, manipulating the vote his way?? Too many common choices, and not class choices. 😑

I've only watched a handful of "Westerns", and of that handful, "The Unforgiven" was my favorite. In reality, when I see a "Western" on TV, whether it's a movie or TV show, I immediately begin thinking of how horrible it would've been to have lived back then! Just surviving day-to-day would be a hassle; getting food, shelter, and any other necessities would be an all-day, every day ordeal. And the worst part of it all... no cars or motorcycles! I'm just not into horses. My sister had one, as did my best friend. They're just not my thing.

The Searchers no doubt! I had the privilege to go to Monument Valley and stand where these giants stood.

A lot of good choices on that list, so it's hard to pick one.

Westerns cover a wide range of topics, sub-genres (comedy, adventure, biography, action, revenge/retribution, even some musicals, like "Annie Get Your Gun"), and production eras (silent, b&w/color, pre/post production code, etc.), making it very hard to nail down a single "best".

My personal favorite is "The Wild Bunch"; it may not be the greatest, but it's the one I've watched the most often.

The Western that I really liked was High Noon. Of course, there's many on the list that I also liked. I love Clint Eastwood movies too.
