Real, celebrity status fame can be enough to make anyone's head spin, especially considering it seems that some people's success can come on overnight.
Raised in an honest and modest lifestyle, Carol Burnett didn't have plans to pursue a career in the entertainment industry. Burnett didn't even harbor any secret dreams of becoming an actor, and as an adolescent was fairly reserved.
"When I started to make it, all the kids I went to school with were totally shocked," said Burnett. "They kept wondering if this was the same quiet, studious Carol Burnett. I was always just a good student, a wallflower who got As and wanted to be a journalist."
In order to pursue journalism, Burnett attended UCLA, where she eventually developed an interest in theatre. "I was petrified the first time I had to get up and do a skit," said Burnett. "But I got my first laugh and I was hooked. It gets in the blood."
With an instinct for comedy, it's no wonder that Burnett rocketed to success the way she did.
"People ask me now if I'm not surprised at all this," said Burnett during an interview with The Toronto Star. "But really, I'm not surprised anymore. There's only one thing that continues to amaze me and that's the closets in our house - just absolutely fantastic huge closets. Now my closet when I was a kid - and this is tragic - my closet was the shower rack."
