Cindy Williams wasn't regretful about accepting the role of Shirley Feeney
"I'd be a fool if I was," she said.
While Cindy Williams had quite a tumultuous relationship with Laverne & Shirley, she never forgot the show that made her a star.
During an interview with The Miami Herald, Williams was asked if she regretted accepting the role of Shirley Feeney.
"I'd be a fool if I was," she said. "Sure, I was hesitant at first. I'd done movies, but I was sweating it out. I was sort of at a standstill in my career. So, I took this. But I was willing to grit it out. Then I discovered it was fun, that I was having fun every week."
Still, while Williams was grateful for the role, she couldn't deny that being a television star was stressful.
"I am tired, though," she said. "It is a grueling pace. It's like doing a play every week — we film on Tuesday nights. And then on Wednesday, we begin all over again. But it is still fun."
Still, Williams was grateful to television for providing her with a sort of stardom that movies simply couldn't.
"And listen, it made my career," said Williams. "I mean, The Conversation didn't. American Graffiti didn't. Travels With My Aunt didn't. But Laverne & Shirley did! And it made it bigger than I'd ever envisioned it!"
However, Williams didn't think of herself as a celebrity but as a regular person who used that relatability to connect with an audience.
"I don't think of it in terms of star persona," she said. "I'm just comfortable being what I am. I think of it as I'm somebody who's familiar with these people. Somebody who they see every week in their homes. Because they see me every week in their homes. Because they see me every week, they accept me at face value as what they see projected on their TV screen."
