Ellen Corby on The Waltons: ''This show is what I’ve always wanted.''
The actor credited the power of positive thinking after winning the role of Grandma Walton.
Though she began starring on The Waltons late in her career, Ellen Corby knew that playing Grandma Walton was a dream come true.
“This show is what I’ve always wanted,” said Corby during an interview with the Ventura County Star, “and what I just knew I’d get someday. You see, I believe in positive KNOWING - not thinking, mind you.”
The show was more than just a job to Corby - she found kinship with her co-stars. “I live alone and never had a family of my own,” said the actor. “These children on the show are like my own grandkids, and I really am the grandma around here.”
Corby originated the role of Esther Walton in the made-for-television film, The Homecoming, which preceded The Waltons series.
“I never finished the role on The Homecoming,” said Corby. "I was afraid the producers wouldn’t want me back. After all, I had caused them a great inconvenience, delayed production, and didn’t seem very healthy.”
The producers were more than willing to make Corby a regular character on the series. Moreover, her co-stars weren’t the only ones fond of her; Grandma Walton became a fan favorite character. The role won Corby three Emmy Awards for her portrayal.
“I sometimes think it was not for my work on the show, but for the 40 years of service I’ve given to the entertainment industry,” joked the actor.
