Harry Morgan was already a huge M*A*SH fan before he was even on the show
Morgan was a fan of the series long before he joined the 4077th.
If you’re a television fan and you were told that you had the opportunity to star in one of your favorite series, you’d probably assume you were dreaming. But for Harry Morgan, that dream was a reality when he was asked to play Col. Sherman Potter in M*A*S*H.
Morgan, who joined the cast in the fourth season, spoke to the Hartford Courant and said of the show, “I find the writing and the entire makeup of the show exceptional.” Reportedly, Morgan also gave press conferences during which he said that, given the choice to star in any show on television, he “would choose M*A*S*H without question.”
Moreover, it can take a bit of extra time for new characters (and their actor) to adapt to an already-established group, especially one of such notoriety. However, Morgan wasn’t worried. He said, “Frankly, I was surprised at the ease with which the character of Colonel Potter was introduced in the first show in which I acted.”
“At the beginning, everybody was a bit wary of the new commander, but at the end, he was accepted, and already one of the boys.” Morgan explained that he felt his natural fusion into the cast of characters was a testament to the talent of the writers. “It is a tribute to writers who can accomplish that in one show.”
It was also certainly helpful that, in addition to acting in a show that he already loved, the character of Colonel Sherman Potter was close to Morgan’s heart as well. When it was time for M*A*S*H to say goodbye and conclude after its eleventh season, Harry Morgan confessed that the character of Potter “is practically me” while also admitting that he knew that no other show would ever come close to M*A*S*H.
