How Ron Howard avoided the ''clichés'' that befall so many child actors

With some effort, Howard became a success story.

In addition to being a dynamite actor and director, Ron Howard has also managed to remain fairly humble throughout his career. While vastly talented, Howard has always maintained that the success of his directing career could be chalked up to one thing.

"It's luck, really," said Howard during an interview with the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. "My personality and point of view are just in sync with the public right now. They seem to agree with me as to what is entertaining."

To say that a majority of Howard's success is due to luck is debatable; the director worked hard to create films like Cocoon and Splash, and that work should be recognized.

One thing that Howard wasn't willing to leave up to chance was the trajectory of his life as a former child star. While many child actors can fall down a wayward path as they grow older, Howard took special precautions to ensure that would never happen to him.

"Part of my code of life became defined by not fulfilling those cliches for people, which later included not being thrown in jail or being written up as a child actor on the rocks," said Howard during an interview with the Daily News. "I consciously wanted to avoid those cliches."

As a result, Howard avoided scandal and gained a reputation to be envied in Hollywood.

"Normally, you'd say Ron couldn't relate to you because he's always been famous," said Lowell Ganz during an interview with the Poughkeepsie Journal. Ganz wrote the film EDtv with Babaloo Mandel, which Howard later directed. "Despite the fact that he's always been a celebrity, he seems to understand the human experience. He knows what people feel in their daily lives."
