How the M*A*S*H finale gave Jamie Farr an identity crisis about his own importance
"Am I really that important?" asked the actor.

Despite the film's popularity, no one had any idea how wildly successful the television adaptation of M*A*S*H would become. After 11 seasons in as many years, the show had built up a tremendous audience and countless devoted fans.
Jamie Farr appeared on the series from the beginning. Though he began as a recurring character, Klinger became popular amongst fans. Farr was later brought on as a main character.
During an interview with United Press International, Farr confessed that the show's popularity was heartwarming, but also a bit overwhelming at times.
"The last show is an American event," said Farr.
"That is frightening. People are holding parties all over this country— sending us off, saying goodbye to us on that final episode... I don't know if I want that responsibility. I'm serious about that."
Farr was widely praised for his portrayal of Klinger. However, he maintained that he didn't take on the role to become a historic figure in television.
"I had no intention of having this so-called national importance," said the actor. "All I wanted was a weekly job where I knew my paycheck was coming in and that I was working in the field that I love...But all this coverage! I mean, it just makes you think, 'Am I really that important?' I'm not that important! I really am not!"
Of course, we might be biased, but it's our opinion that Farr is a pretty important person, not just because of the character he played, but the effect he had on our hearts and minds.
