Jack Webb wanted to put the ''entertainment'' back into the entertainment industry

The Dragnet creator and star felt that television had lost sight of one key goal.

NBC/Universal

Jack Webb was seemingly an expert in the art of television. Webb was at the helm of some of your favorite crime series, including Dragnet, Adam-12, and Emergency!

With so many years of experience, Webb had seen television's changing landscape throughout the years and thought that it was pertinent for him to throw his two cents in.

During an interview, Webb explained that he felt the goals of television had become woefully skewed, and in order to return to the roots of the medium, creators and producers needed to focus on one singular thing.

"If we in the business have a single illness, it's that we don't entertain anymore," said Webb during an interview with The Pittsburgh Press. "So if you want social comment and expose - watch something - or read a newspaper. I don't think we gain much in TV by getting into politics and slapdashing our way through heavy social issues. People get enough of that. They want to see the kind of typical news stories they get on their own local stations."

Webb didn't mind some sort of lesson being taught to his audience, but his primary goal as a creator was to entertain his loyal fanbase to the best of his abilities.

"If we can have fallout benefit, as they tell me I've had with my crime shows and my paramedics series, I'll be pleased," said Webb. "But I'm not working for it."
