Jamie Farr on the ''pendulum'' of success

"You just have to wait it out," said the M*A*S*H actor.

Jamie Farr made television history when he began starring in the CBS series M*A*S*H. The successful series perfectly balanced comedy with drama, using its platform on television to tell immersive stories that almost always taught the audience a lesson.

The series ran for eleven seasons, which is certainly nothing to sneeze at. Later, Farr starred in the spin-off series, AfterMASH, though the show only ran for two seasons before being cancelled.

While Farr kept working, it was difficult to find a new project that maintained the same popularity and momentum that M*A*S*H had achieved for so long.

Still, Farr wasn’t worried. The actor kept a fruitful theater career and appeared in films like The Cannonball Run (1981) and Scrooged (1988). As for television, the actor frequently appeared in popular shows as a guest star in programs like Murder, She Wrote and Mad About You.

Farr had no issue with his career slowing down. He appreciated the work that he had accomplished and remained optimistic about opportunities to come.

“You know, the pendulum always swings back,” said Farr during an interview with the Canadian Press. “It swung back for Andy Griffith in Matlock, it swung back for Carroll O’Connor in In the Heat of the Night. It swung back for Bea Arthur in Golden Girls and Rue McClanahan in Golden Girls. So you just have to wait it out…I’ve been in this business for 39 years, and they haven’t killed me off with a stake in the heart or shot me with a silver bullet. I’m still here.”
