Jeff Goldblum explained what attracted him to the movie Earth Girls Are Easy
"I like variety," said Goldblum.

Known for his more serious movies, like Independence Day (1996) and The Fly (1986), it's interesting to think that a film might interest Jeff Goldblum simply because of its humor. The actor carved out a niche for himself in action films, earning success in blockbuster films.
But in the 1980s, the script for Earth Girls Are Easy caught Goldblum's eye for a simple reason. "It made me laugh," said Goldblum of his initial interest in Earth Girls Are Easy, according to an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
The film also allowed Goldblum to explore his musical side, a rare opportunity. "There was music in it, and I'm a jazz pianist," said the actor. "I got to play and, at one point, I'm even tinkling a little something I wrote."
The movie was a stark contrast from much of Goldblum's previous work, though it seems that was precisely why it interested him in the first place.
"I like variety, and this role was a welcome change from the serious things I'd been doing," said the actor.
A comedy film like Earth Girls Are Easy was a welcome opportunity for Goldblum to demonstrate his comedic chops, especially alongside his co-stars, Jim Carrey and Damon Wayans.
"I met the director, Julien Temple, saw his previous film, Absolute Beginners (1986)," said Goldblum. "I thought that he could do something original and hip and smart and interesting."
